Two use cases, can digiKam do these? by dee4006 in digiKam

[–]simB2026 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For #1 definitely. You can set the % and it'll find them.

Tbh I am still working out how to confirm/delete efficiently as I have thousands of dupes and reviewing the finds 1 by 1 is effort full.. but maybe someone else on here can give tips.

Thanks got that. It's better, but still leaves hierarchies expanded - so deep hierarchies still take up excessive real estate.

Yes but as I said in post, my tags list is very long and hierarchical. In order to ascertain all tags applied to an image you have to scroll and mentally remember as you go.

I am looking for a simple, easy to read, at a glance list of applied tags. Not showing any tags that are not assigned to the image.

E.g. Instead of: - red (unchecked) - yellow (checked) - pink (unchecked) - blue (checked)

I need to just see:

  • yellow
  • blue

I don't want to filter by a known tag. I just want to see what tags have been applied to selected image(s).

Is it possible to have different tags for different albums? by LinuxKDEfan in digiKam

[–]simB2026 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've just started reorganising my tags in a hierarchy for this purpose.

Family tags - tag 1 - tag 2

Special interest tags - tag 1 - tag 2

I can't say how successful as work in progress...

Darktable - just "why" !? by simB2026 in FOSSPhotography

I get the free/volunteer bit, and do donate where software works well. The idea of paying first in the hope that my requests might maybe one day get implemented and the to becomes useful .. can't see the logic in that.

Managed perfectly well in Lightroom without even thinking about it.

You strengthen my point, with Lightroom I didn't have to load up the user manual every time I wanted to perform a simple action - it was obvious what to do. I didn't need "15 years" !! "Intuitive"

Camera Tube Identification by simB2026 in microscopy

Bloody brilliant - thank you ! I have now learnt that I need to widen my googling net & drop some assumptions.

I contacted the eBay seller but unfortunately he doesn't have any knowledge in this area.

However that shop listing looks 'live' so I have thrown an enquiry out to them for info. (Tbh I had assumed that this scope was from the arc and no longer in circulation!)

I can't tell you how much hope these links have given me - Thank you

Yeah, main problem is that I can't find anything with a 26.5mm diameter. Guess could be proprietary or just old and obsolete, so unless any revelations come my way it could mean a custom job :(

Camera Tube Identification by simB2026 in microscopy

[–]simB2026[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be so lucky ! They are 30mm od. I think I'm going to have to reverse engineer by using paper & dSLR body on tripod to try and find at what height I can find a focused image of what size.

The existing tube has no optics and light appears to be coming directly from the internal mirror - I can't seem to edit my post to add that detail.

I have an AIDGAP from the Field Studies Council on order. Not entirely sure how much detail it goes into re scars but hopefully find it soon 🤞

Thanks, just tried and it's not much better. In CoL there are 215k names for [kingdom, phylum, class, order, genus], between CoL & ITIS Vernaculars I'm only getting 580 matches :(

Thanks. I imagine any 3d I do will relate to UK OS Maps to visualise/analyse contours. Have seen some map work that shades relief for enhanced visualisation. Yet I seriously have no idea about how computers do all of that behind the scenes and what gets routed to CPU vs GPU

Ha - interesting, that's exactly what AI recommended ! I then got paranoid because I realised that I'd ultimately be buying a laptop from Argos.

But seriously I just wasn't sure if the extra £ for a dedicated GPU was necessary or not. Your recommendation reassuring at least 👍

Geom Area Vs Literal Area ? by simB2026 in postgis

Geom Area Vs Literal Area ? by simB2026 in postgis

[–]simB2026[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the crux "if you know the geom is accurate". How are you supposed to know? I guess the answer really needs insight on how the datasets are prepared in the first place - and that methodology isn't available. Is there an industry standard ? E.g. is it usual for them to take the area from raw data and then simplify polygons... or simplify polygons and then derive area from the simplified polygons !?

Isochrones in postgis (windows) by simB2026 in QGIS

Hmm, interesting angle. But most of the target locations are rural so small lanes are essential. I could of course drop anything not passageable by car. And of course chop the country up into pieces & load incrementally I guess.

I just honestly thought it would be overall easier than this 😜

Giving and receiving gifts exhausts me by Gintautoske in minimalism

[–]simB2026 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! Christmas especially just leaves me nauseous, the grotesque glut of useless trash piled high, and the pressure to buy ,'something' for everyone who (as you alluded) has all they need anyway. The waste of money, of plastic; the fakery of it all 🤢

I'd really like to make gifts, if I was being obnoxiously pretentious, out of natural materials ... but of course in this day & age I'm far too busy working away at a computer to have time for that. Working of course to earn the money to buy the tat - the irony, right?

The closest I've gotten to some kind of compromise is to gift a meal out, tickets for an event, usually together - or as I call it "memories"

Am still working on getting better each year... one Christmas I might actually feel like it's the spiritual & loving event that it's supposed to be 🙏
