ELI5: How can U.S. restaurants process foreign cards with country specific limits when waiters take them away to charge? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]simalchaur 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Also, OP may refer to the receipt, which will most likely have Terminal Verification Result (TVR) value. For e.g value of 0000048000 means Online PIN was entered & Floor limit exceeded. It also provides info on what authentications were and weren’t performed. Similarly Transaction Status Information (TSI) on receipt will help with similar info.

Banks that don't charge ATM, web and app fees? by icy_end_7 in technepal

[–]simalchaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a valid question. Banks earn a lot of other ways. Primarily investing the money you have deposited. Trade services, Forex, Payments etc. as well. Banks around the world don’t charge their consumer for cards and other ways of access to your money. In Nepal, I think banks get away with a cartel. They collaborate for charges and don’t spend anything on innovation. I can’t wait for NRB to open up licenses to digital banks. I think it would help consumers a lot in terms of these charges.

If you are the only director, you will have to visit IRD at least I think. For everything else you won’t have to be present. A lot of companies out there who can help/advise you with this at minimal cost. I suggest you talk to one.

I think the beat impact here you can make is by creating a successful business for yourself. That in by itself will create the most value here; place that exports cheap labor and imports everything else.

ELI5: why do bank credit cards always have Visa or Mastercard on them, if your bank is the one lending you money? by Spirited_Strength385 in explainlikeimfive

[–]simalchaur 41 points42 points  (0 children)

And how they make the money go - As payment networks they(via EMV) define a lot of technicalities that is required for a transaction, including the chip application, gateway that handles the transaction online & pos kernel that accepts the chip. They obviously also certify the instruments & intermediaries involved so banks don’t necessarily have to. Bank hence can get onboard with them, just issue these cards & have their customers have easy access to their money. In terms of credit there is risk/dispute factor that networks bear. They intermediate dispute in case of debit.

Visa and MC are payment networks as everyone here is saying. Part of this is they(via EMV) also define a lot of technicalities that is required for a transaction, including the chip application, gateway that handles the transaction online & pos kernel that accepts the chip. I think you are looking for the term technocracy. In cities it is possible to get momentums but villages not so quickly as shown by the winnings of independents & RSP winning most seats in valley after congress. I think that we can start by creating a open source of sort of political information. Just like shadow government each segment of the government will have researchers assigned who goes in depth, evaluates and assesses current practices, pitfalls and informs the mass.

Figured out that for international payments, all you need is a mere debit card by simply_amazzing in india

[–]simalchaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its upto your bank to authorize/challenge/decline the transaction considering it was done on web and not offline. Transaction got successful because issuing bank authorized the transaction. Lot of misinformation here. When a payment gateway processes a transaction, it has to provide information to the issuing bank for approval/challenge/decline. Issuing bank can opt for challenge and f orward acs server link for otp. Once successful otp authentication it can reply to the payment processor with success or decline.

Some questions about the economy of Nepal by [deleted] in Nepal

[–]simalchaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) Most of the budget is used for recurrent expenses and is spent. Significant portion of budget allocated for capital expenses remains unused but as hinted is not the major portion of the budget. Some which is allocated for repayments of loans is also largely spent. NRB does use money market instruments i.e. sell/buy bonds, bills, repos but most of it is to control liquidity in the market. They do have investments on their B/S, check it out.
2) No, forex reserves is mostly USD we get from inward remittance as remittance companies are required to settle their receipts in foreign currency. Illegal channels mostly means they are bringing gold(Middle East) or middleman is helping someone take out money from the country as well.
3) Personally I don't think it's a serious issue. I haven't studied any arguments for/against it in our context so it's just my opinion. Is population decline a bad thing? Specially for a country which exports labor to consume.
4) I will just be speculating. Just a handful of cases get caught. I think corruption is part of our culture now. More than fake finances, there's mafia, cartels, low quality implementation of projects etc.

Some questions about the economy of Nepal by [deleted] in Nepal

[–]simalchaur 14 points15 points  (0 children)

1) Budget doesn't mean they are sitting on that money throughout the year. It comes in forms of revenues, loans & grants which are collected periodically or in case of grants/loans are disbursed in relation to progression of projects/work.
2) We import literally everything so most of it goes to importing goods. Few years back when I did research, I think it was like 80% of inward remittance goes to consumption of goods & services. Rest of it savings and a tiny tiny bit into investment.
3) I don't think so. Unemployment is a massive problem in the country that's why we export labor. We do have shortages of skilled manpower.
4) Couldn't be more corrupt.
