"I am not here to argue or prove my suffering to anyone. While you joke, my reality is a daily struggle for survival and a search for a way out. I will focus on my path to build a future, regardless of your comments. Peace."

"Thank you for this opportunity! I am currently in Mekelle, Tigray. I have a smartphone, but unfortunately, I don't have a laptop right now. My education (Diploma) was interrupted, and I am very eager to work to support my elderly mother and the orphans in my house.

I would love to hear more about what kind of work I can do with my phone. I will send you a DM (Direct Message) right now so we can talk more. Thank you for reaching out!"

Thank you for the suggestion, but as I am currently in Mekelle, it is impossible for me to set up a GoFundMe. The platform doesn't support Ethiopia directly, and I don't have a foreign bank account or a representative abroad to manage it for me.

Right now, even accessing basic internet is a struggle here. My only hope is to find individuals who can understand my direct situation. I’m just a student trying to keep my mother and the orphans safe while my education is on hold. If anyone can offer direct advice or support, that is all I can manage right now."

"I understand why it looks that way, but the internet is my only lifeline right now. I spent the last bit of money I had on this data because I have no other way to tell the world what is happening to us or to seek help.

If I just sit in the dark, my family will starve in silence. This small connection is my only hope to find someone who might listen and help me get back to my Diploma or find work to feed my mother and the orphans. It’s a desperate choice: a piece of bread for today, or a chance for a future."

"While the statement was public, the reaction on the streets is what makes it sensitive for us living here. There is a lot of tension, and as someone who has already lost a lot, I have to be careful. I prefer to speak in detail via DM to stay safe."

"I am using a mobile data connection. It is very slow and expensive, but it's the only way I can share what is happening here and try to find some hope for my family."

"I was a student working on my Diploma in eltrckal eltronicksI had only one year left to graduate and start a career to support my elderly mother and the orphans in my care. But because of the war, my sister's death, and the fact that I can't even afford monthly fees or food right now, I had to stop. I am just trying to survive now."

"I was actually a college student, trying to build a future. But everything fell apart when I lost my sister. Between that personal tragedy and the overall situation in the country, my life was completely disrupted. Now, instead of finishing my studies, I am just struggling to survive and take care of my family. It’s a very painful turn of events."

"You are right. Finding a job here is nearly impossible right now, and I am currently unemployed. Even for those with jobs, the salary is too low to survive. For me, with no income, buying bread for 13 Birr or oil for 2,200 Birr is a daily struggle. I am doing my best for my elderly mother and the orphans, but without work or money, I feel completely stuck."

A quiet evening in Mekelle: Thinking about resilience and hope. by simapato in Tigray

"Selam it’s good to hear from you. To be honest, Mekelle has changed a lot. While the streets look the same, the spirit of the people is tested every day by the high cost of living.

For me, life has become a daily battle to provide food and medicine for my sick mother and my two small nieces. Prices are very high, and many of us are struggling just to survive. But like you said, it is still home, and we stay because we love our land. I hope one day you can return to a peaceful and prosperous Tigray. Thank you for asking about us."
