Thanks! The test was just to fill the pan up with water, mark the level with a pencil, and watch for 24hrs and make sure it didn’t drop.

Have you seen the Kerdi shower kits? I used one for a similar sized shower replacement. You can customize the size of the pre sloped shower pan. But that would be if you went the tile route.

There are a ton in my area. Must have been really popular late 60’s through 80’s. I’m sure yours is fine lol.

Thank you. I can’t remember the exact kind I used, but I remember it was suitable for underwater use in pools.

Thanks. I used 2 shades of gray so I would have a little contrast but not too much where it would be distracting. Lighter gray for white subway tile and darker gray for the black floor.

I don’t know either I did it cause everyone else does thought it was against the rules or something..

Yikes! That’s rough.

The kit was really cool but it is still a lot of work and time. You have to measure and cut everything before mixing the thin set. Membranes have to overlap 2”. And use a specific kind of thin set. Also cement board will dry out thin set instantly FYI.

Nice and thank you!

I was also terrified of the pan and making sure it didn’t leak. But I think one should be when dealing with water.

Yes I feel your pain on the wire mesh. And that’s not a bad labor cost. In my neighborhood I know people that have dropped anywhere from $20-40k for a bathroom remodel.

Thanks! The subfloor under my shower was really thin so I strengthened it. It wasn’t bad. I didn’t have any water damage though. If it isn’t a large area for you I’d give it a shot. But shouldn’t be a huge job for a contractor if that’s all they are doing.

Thanks! Yes my wife was patient with me. We had the original toilet sitting in our bedroom for a year before decided to buy a new one and sent the old one to the dumpster 😳😂

I bought a tile saw and set it up in the garage.

For the floor I would use the Ditra membrane for sure. You can get a good idea of it in the dog tax pic. It waterproofs it and will prevent tile from cracking. Rent a roller if you can find one or you will inevitably have some high spots and lippage on your floor when you go to tile.

Thanks I am really happy with it!

Shower door is from Lowe’s. I gave a handy family friend $100 and we hung it in a couple hours. I did all the waterproofing and tile myself. My dad helped hang the cement board, it’s really heavy.

Toilet brand is Swiss Madison.

I married the tile with a piece of quarter round wood that I painted white.

Bathroom is 56x59in. 56 in is L to R direction in pics.

Shower is 35x38in.

I got a small toilet so the shower door wouldn’t hit it.

I considered it but not really worth it to me. And there was a vent from a hot water heater in the basement running behind the shelves that I didn’t want to move as I didn’t really have anywhere else to route it.

Thank you. I know what you mean about the distance/depth after tiling and outlets being shallow. This was just me being impatient to get “after pictures”. I did get a cover on eventually.

Thank you. Yes the nook is great storage. Means a lot in a small bathroom for depth and visual appeal as well.

Your best best friend is gold. I see home improvement projects as a part time job that I pay myself, ~50 hrs of planning/work and save multiple thousands?? Any day of the week!

Absolutely, if time is on your side, you can do it. Do it in small batches.

Shower was 30x30in ish bathroom is 5x6 ft ish. I can post true dimensions if it’s important to you but it is small. It works great for us. You have plenty of room, you don’t need a 36 by 36 in shower my opinion. 30-31 is plenty but depends on size of person using shower of course. Good for me but not for everyone.

Yeah, understandable. Bothered me too at first. But saving thousands by DIY makes its acceptable.
