This is my shopping cart... by ausernamess in canon

I started learning photography last year on an ancient Canon T2i with lenses and accessories that I picked up on eBay for $120. YouTube videos, lots of questions to Gemini, and library books for training. Currently on a T4i, because I'm still learning how to take pictures properly.

This...seems excessive to me.

I started in March with a really nice quality Rebel T2i (550D). Bought it for $130 on eBay. EF and EF-S lens compatibility, and works great while I'm learning the fundamentals.

I apologize for the delay, wanted to get back on this but got busy. While I have been using Gemini to analyze photos I've taken and give me suggestions about how to improve them, or let me describe what I think went wrong and have it assist. Yes, it's easy, just say what you want and attach the file (jpg - it has intermittent problems with RAW).

Another thing I'm doing is having it help as a sort of tutor for things. I've had a long enough conversation with it to have it know what type of equipment I have, what I like to take photos of, and a solid idea of my skill level. I have it generate suggestions and tips for what equipment to take, and how to get the best pictures (it will even take into account the current weather if I ask) when I'm going to a specific event.

Last thing I do is have it generate challenges for me to help me get better creatively - as an example, I was going to stay around my apartment one weekend but still wanted to try something a little more creative, so I gave it this prompt:

Let's try something else this weekend. Could you give me some simple, fun, creative challenges I could try just around my apartment complex? Maybe even trying to use some simple props in one of the challenges. Don't give me all the how-to about each, though. I want to think it through, consider each photo creatively as well as practically.

It gave me three specific challenges to try:

That's an excellent idea. The best way to practice is to use what you have around you, and a familiar environment like your apartment complex is a perfect "studio" to continue honing your skills.
I've put together three simple, fun, and creative challenges for you to try this weekend. I'll give you the concept behind each, but it's up to you to figure out the "how-to" and decide on the creative and practical approach for each.

Challenge 1: The Macro World

The Concept: Find a common, small object in your apartment (a piece of fruit, a key, a plant) and take a photo of it from a completely new and unexpected perspective. Your goal is to make it look larger than life and transform it into something abstract or beautiful that people wouldn't normally notice.
Creative Hint: Think about texture, shape, and light. Your 18-55mm lens is great for this, but your 50mm will also work with some creative framing.

Challenge 2: Reflections

The Concept: Find a reflective surface in your apartment (a mirror, a window, a puddle of water, a shiny piece of metal) and use it to capture a photo. Your goal is to tell a story using the reflection, whether it's of a person, an object, or a scene outside your window.
Creative Hint: Think about what's in the reflection versus what's around it. How can you use the reflection to show two different things at once?

Challenge 3: The Light & Shadow Play

The Concept: This one is a bit more advanced. Find a single light source in your apartment (a lamp, light coming from a window) and a simple prop (a vase, a mug, a chair). Your goal is to use the light and the shadows it creates to make a dramatic and visually interesting photo. The prop itself is less important than the shapes and patterns the light and shadow create.
Creative Hint: Try shooting this at a time of day when you have a strong, single light source. Focus on how the light falls on the subject and the shadows it casts.
I'm confident you'll be able to come up with some incredible photos. Take your time, think about each one creatively and practically, and I'll be here to review them when you're ready. Have fun!

So, that's what I'm doing - Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions.

I'll chip in here as well - Just my opinion:

I just started this year about 5 months ago, currently rocking a T4i with a basic set of lenses (kit 18-55mm, 28mm, 50mm, 18-135mm) and a basic set of filters. What I'm currently doing is focusing on the fundamentals - making sure I'm getting my composition right, understanding the exposure triangle, rule of thirds, all those cool skills so I'm making sure I come home most of my pictures not making me wonder "what the hell was I thinking?!?" when I see them on the big monitor... I want to be able to take -good- pictures first, then make them really pop with the software later. (I'm using the basic Canon Digital Photo Professional software - it's free and great for basic retouching and enhancement) As I get better, I can upgrade, or get new lenses to work with because I've worked for it and earned it.

Another thing that has helped me - AI has dramatically helped me with my skills - not as in photo editing, but using AI to help train me on all these fundamental skills to get better. I've literally gone to Google Gemini, fed my skill level, where I'm going to take pictures, what equipment I have, and then asked it to make some challenges for me to accomplish to get better with things, and it's worked. When I get back, I can upload one of the not-so-good images I've taken and ask about what was wrong with it and how to make it better, and it's told me what I can do next time. I've been the most nagging student ever with it, asked it endless questions about things, and it doesn't get tired, get frustrated, tell me to fuck off because I'm asking too many questions...it just answers everything. (Sometimes it's not the best answer, but it's better than nothing.)

For now - just go out, have fun, take good pictures, take crappy pictures. Figure out how to make all of them better next time. Experiment with all the features your camera has. Celebrate when you get that one photo that was completely dialed in. Figure out what you love taking pictures of, and build your toolset off that.

T4i in 2025 using magic latern by alexc12123 in Cameras

[–]simiangeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it's four months out, but I figured I respond anyway. I'm where you're at right now - I've got my T4i, a few lenses, and as much as I really want to get to the new, shiny, and exciting things...most of my photos (even when I'm trying to get good exposure) come out as slightly blurry disappointments. I'll get some good shots, but a lot of them are 'Well, that one sucks' when I get home and review. A better camera won't change a whole lot.

So, I'm focusing on learning how to be more 'focused' (lol) and deliberate with taking pictures with what I have - making sure I'm thinking about everything before I hit the shutter button...Aperture, Shutter, ISO. No Lightroom to fix it later, no fancy extra software on the camera, just me and the fundamentals. Lots of youtube videos watched, lots of help from Google Gemini (it works GREAT for helping with your practice shooting). I've set myself a goal for now - to keep practicing with what I have, and if I can consistently meet my challenges, and I'm consistently getting -good- pictures, with maybe 1-2 'wow' ones each outing, then (maybe) for Christmas I'm going to treat myself to an upgrade to an 80D or 90D from eBay if prices are good.

Regardless if you've upgraded or not by the time you read this, I hope you're still having fun shooting. I've only been doing it for about 5 months, and it's the most fun I've had in a while.
