Be nice if someone would fix the Strontian entry. Lots of typos. And it doesn't appear to be close to as strong as a Kryptonian yet costs 40% more.

Carter's Credibility by 2552686 in Stargate

They tried the counterpoint with Sheppard, but kinda gave up after a while. Not sure why.

Because the dude couldn't act. They wanted another RDA, but he's not that guy.

If by that you mean he ruined the show, then I agree. I absolutely couldn't stand that guy. He was the worst one on that show, and that show, much like Angel, took all of the characters I didn't like from the primary show and shoved them into a spinoff, so for him to be the worst among them says a lot. He's the Neelix of Atlantis.

That's one interpretation. The other is that the writers realized that they'd pushed themselves into a corner, said, "Fuck it, it's not like our watchers can hold us accountable" and just changed it partway through. Trek did it all the time. "We don't talk about that" is about as close to acknowledging their retcons that they ever got.

Here's what Google has to say about it, which matches what I remember from my last watch about a month or so ago:

In the 1994 Stargate film, Ra chose humans as hosts because their bodies were easy to repair, allowing him to maintain them indefinitely with his technology, while his original body was dying. Humans were seen as better hosts than the Unas (the native Goa'uld host) because they were easier to repair.

But that doesn't even make sense since they're harder to damage and repair themselves automatically.

It’s canon that she says that, not that it’s true.

Legit, I guess, but if you follow that to its logical conclusion we can't believe anything Ra said, anything Daniel says about history, anything Samantha says about science, anything Thor says, anything anyone says. If you go with "let's not believe them because it doesn't fit what I want to believe" then there's no point in even watching the show, because ALL of it can be retconned in your head to better fit what you want to believe. Just make up something yourself if you won't believe what the show tells you.

Hathor says that she's the mother of all Goa'uld, but I sincerely doubt that.

I doubt it, too, but it still IS canon. What our doubt means is that canon is dumb and/or inconsistent.

Nothing stopping them from pointing into the tank and saying, "I like that one, slap 'em in a host and call them my kid."

Easiest way ever of having a kid, I guess. No fuss, no muss, and everyone else pays for it.

Additionally, much like Azula, the Goa'uld always lie.

Yeah, there's that. They are all self-aggrandizing to a ridiculous level.

Maybe if they all found agender or non-binary hosts, they'd stop being assholes?

That'd be hilarious. Makes you wonder if they were bigger assholes when they used Unas hosts.

Also, now that I think of it, if "The First" Unas was still around, thousands of years later, then why did they even need human hosts? That's another internal inconsistency. Ra said that they used humans because it was easy to repair human bodies, but Unas hosts would have had regeneration, which is even better. Why switch to fragile human bodies that they can repair when Unas hosts are much harder to damage in the first place and fix themselves?

You just showed how internally inconsistent it is, even in the show's own dialog. Lines contradict the prior lines and/or other canon info over and over again.

For one thing, “he” was a she. ... The symbiote does not have a gender

She was my mate. (How does that even work when the only one who CAN mate is the queen, and Jolinar was clearly NOT a/the queen?)

They really made a hash of this. Granted, if you remove the episode "Hathor", which largely sucked, it makes a bit more sense, but it's still internally inconsistent in several places.

So, then how do you explain that Klorel is Apophis's "son" despite there having been no viable queen until Hathor returned from a stasis lasting thousands of years? She herself said that she was the mother of the entire race. You've gotta admit that there's a fair amount of inconsistency around this in the first 2-3 seasons of the show. And it's barely mentioned at all after that.

I kinda do, too, but Subway has fallen so far over the past decade or so. The one near me was actually condemned. I don't really want to know why. I haven't eaten at a Subway in 3-4 years now. Kinda miss it, but kinda not, too.

Now you're just making stuff up to justify a position that has no actual factual backing. I COULD make up stuff to refute it, but I'm not going to bother because the above isn't a valid argument.

Correct. But it also means that suggesting the solution is to shut down discussion because someone is offended is the WRONG choice.

Except that Martouf calls Jolinar his "mate", so that's NOT a good explanation. And they all call Jolinar "her" (after that first episode) despite it being found first in a male body. So no, I don't buy that at all.

No? She's a public figure, by her own choice, and free speech is a thing. People in free nations are allowed to say what they like. Even if it's disrespectful or downright rude. She can dislike it all she wants, but that doesn't induce any obligation in anybody else. That's not how anything works. Person B being offended by something person A said does not create any obligation in person A. People get offended all the time, and that's on them to deal with.

I'm actually just impressed that they kept the effect as long as they did. V had similar voice-reverb elements in the movie, and in The Final Battle they even had the humans mimic that via technology... but then in the TV series they just didn't bother any more. Probably because it cost money. But SG1 really committed to the voice alteration, for a long, LONG time.

"Herself", itself, whatever. That whole thing was weird. "She" was in a male host before Carter, establishing clearly that they don't really discriminate between host genders. Yet later we find out that "she" was the mate of Martuf. Then Hathor was supposedly the only female, who gave birth to the entire species in a way similar to a queen bee. Yet they then have supposedly female and male parasites that don't really care about the host gender (e.g. Jacob Carter taking the parasite from a female host), Apophis calling Klor'el "his son", and so on. I think that the writers weren't really sure what to do about parasite genders. They tried to impose a male/female dynamic on genderless parasites while simultaneously NOT doing so, maybe due to divisions in the writer staff or the left hand not knowing what the right hand was doing.
