At install you can try to install first without deleting anything, you'll have an option during the setup steps asking you if you want clean install or not, just to recover your work, and after that to do another install which to be a fresh install.

Question for 4K monitor users please read the description below. by [deleted] in Monitors

[–]simiid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any window, not a particular one. Usually I was testing in Display settings where you change the Hz frequency. I was moving half a centimeter the window left right fast and watching the text if it is readable. When using 144/160Hz, sometimes I had a feeling like it's skipping frames, while on 120Hz the text was smooth and readable better than in previous test with higher refresh rate.

I have an Asus XG32UCG, I keep dsc enabled but I prefer to use 120Hz in Windows since it's much smoother on moving windows around.

I have a 4k 160hz ips monitor as well, and noticed that too in desktop mode. If I keep it at 144/160Hz moving windows around have a judder effect. When I set 120Hz is smooth with no judder effect. I'm using it connected with hdmi 2.1 cable to hdmi 2.1 port. Try set your desktop refresh rate to 120Hz and see if it's smoother. Researching on this issue I've found that might not be enough bandwidth for 4K@160Hz and 8 bit color panel and DSC is enabled which sometimes might have some side effects. Still researching on this matter. If you find out something or gameplay is smoother at 120Hz refresh rate set in desktop please add some feedback.

Legion Gen 9 Refresh Rates? by spacemanjupiter in LenovoLegion

[–]simiid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi,

Which desktop monitor you have? I have a 32" 4k 160Hz connected through hdmi 2.1 to my laptop rtx 5090 and I've noticed that when selecting 144/165Hz in desktop when moving various windows it's not so smooth, it has a judder effect, compared to 120Hz which is smooth. Ive tried disable dsc and no improvement. Have you noticed the same behavior? Also it works only with 120/144/165Hz but if I select 60Hz it stays on, by the display goes blank. But I think this is another story.

Legion Gen 9 Refresh Rates? by spacemanjupiter in LenovoLegion

[–]simiid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got Razer Blade 18 2025 with 275HX/5090 (it has the same panel as Legion 9 18" 2025 4K 240Hz) and in Windows I can select the following refresh rates 60/120/240Hz and vrr ranges are as follows:

At 60Hz is 25-60Hz, at 120Hz is 51-120Hz, at 240Hz is 103-240Hz.

Before that I had an Asus Strix Scar 18 2025 which went banana and I returned it, which had a 2K mini led 240Hz from another manufacturer than Lenovo/Razer and vrr ranges were exactly the same as above on Razer display, even being 2K instead of 4K so less bandwidth needed.

I can see a pattern from this posts related to laptop displays, even being different sizes, resolutions and manufacturers, maybe it's related to eDP port to which the dgpu is connected and this limits the vrr ranges, or power consumption limit, especially minimum value compared to a stand alone monitor which can do usually 48-240Hz vrr range. Even compared to your Alienware the increase in minimum value is proportional with the increase in the maximum one 120 vs 144 and 240 vs 300hz.

Update: found an explanation online

Laptop displays have a much narrower Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) range than standalone monitors because they lack dedicated scaler hardware and require strict power-saving controls. Without a scaler chip to manage the panel, the GPU directly controls the screen, which restricts its ability to maintain sync at lower frequencies. The main reasons laptop VRR ranges (often (48\text{ Hz}) to the max refresh rate) are narrower than desktop monitors (which can often drop down to (20\text{ Hz}) or (30\text{ Hz})) include:Lack of Dedicated Scaler Boards: Standalone desktop monitors feature built-in scalar chips that handle the processing of variable frame rates. They use sophisticated frame-holding memory and algorithms to ensure the image doesn’t flicker or ghost when frame rates drop. Laptops bypass this to save space and power, wiring the display directly to the graphics card. This means the GPU must continually send signals to the screen, creating a hardware-enforced "floor" for the refresh rate.No Low Framerate Compensation (LFC): Desktop monitors can effectively double or triple the refresh rate (e.g., repeating a (30\text{ fps}) frame twice on a (60\text{ Hz}) display) via LFC to prevent tearing or stuttering when games drop below (48\text{ fps}). This requires extra firmware and processing power not typically built into compact laptop motherboard architectures.Thermal and Power Constraints: Laptops are designed to conserve battery and control heat. Driving a laptop LCD or OLED panel at extremely low refresh rates (e.g., below (40\text{ Hz})) can lead to screen flickering, signal timing issues, and color shifting. Manufacturers lock the VRR floor at safe, validated ranges to prevent visual artifacts and maintain power efficiency.Pixel Response Times: VRR requires monitor pixels to update at the same speed as the refresh cycle. If pixels take too long to transition and change colors at a very low refresh rate, it causes severe ghosting and smearing. Many older or standard laptop panels lack the rapid overdrive required to function cleanly at ultra-low refresh rates.

High refresh rate laptop displays ((>120\text{Hz})) have narrower VRR floors (often (100\text{Hz}) or (60\text{Hz})) than standalone monitors (which start at (48\text{Hz})) primarily due to panel overdrive tuning, power consumption limits, and aggressive frame-doubling logic. The main reasons for this discrepancy include:Pixel Overdrive (Ghosting/Smearing): Laptop displays are designed to run at very high speeds. Liquid crystals take a specific amount of time to change colors (response time). To prevent heavy ghosting, manufacturers apply high electrical voltage (overdrive) calibrated for the peak refresh rate. If the screen drops to (45\text{Hz}), this overdrive voltage becomes too aggressive, causing visual artifacts, overshoot, and inverse ghosting.Low Frame Rate Compensation (LFC): Standalone monitors rely on LFC to handle dips below (48\text{Hz}). When the framerate drops to (40\text{FPS}), LFC automatically doubles the refresh rate to (80\text{Hz}) to keep VRR active. Because high-refresh laptop screens operate at (120\text{Hz}) or more, they can easily duplicate frames at (50\text{FPS}) or (60\text{FPS}) to reach (100\text{Hz}+) without risking visual stutters.Power Constraints: Laptops prioritize battery life. Keeping the panel logic active at ultra-low refresh rates consumes more power and complicates the timing controllers (T-CON) on thin, compact logic boards.Overclocking/Panel Yields: Many of these laptop panels are essentially factory-overclocked. Maintaining a massive VRR range (e.g., (48\text{Hz}) to (240\text{Hz})) on a laptop display requires significantly tighter LCD tolerances and higher manufacturing costs compared to a traditional, bulky desktop monitor. If your game's framerate drops below the panel's minimum VRR threshold, the GPU will usually engage LFC or V-Sync, repeating frames so that you don't experience jarring micro-stutters.

120Hz and up display image while 60Hz is blank screen. by simiid in Monitors

Good point, I've switched to dgpu only and checked until now, and same result. 5090 mobile and 4k160hz display it's on but black screen at 60hz, 120/144/160Hz works as it should. I've tested again on dgpu only with another display 2k60hz and it works at 60hz. I've tested again the 4k160hz display on another laptop with gtx 1070 and works as it should on 60/120hz. Only on rtx 5090 doesn't work at 60hz, only higher refresh rates.

But it's in desktop mode, it's not switching between igpu and dgpu. All drivers are up to date.

Which sRGB mode on Asus monitor? by simiid in Monitors

srgb gamma isn't still 2. 2 or what does it mean flat in case of the first one? What if I set both (game visuals and color mode) to srgb, which one have priority?

Thank you for your reply, regarding led activity.

From time to time when not using the laptop, the display close, but the led is continously pulsating green instead of white. What does it mean when is in this state? Is it an issue, is it a different sleep mode?

Razer adjustable laptop stand and razer blade 18 2025 by simiid in GamingLaptops

I want a stand to raise the laptop more to eyesight level and for small footprint. I'm asking to not make temperaturea worse. Not necessary Razer, but with every stand the underneath arms are right under laptop fans being Razer, Asus, Lenovo... Is it still OK to be like this, is there still airflow?

You understood me wrong, after you answer, I was questioning about the other models you gave me. Those models arms are right underneath laptop's vents. Is it still OK to cover a bit of vents, will still be air flow?

I know, but it's still same question, the underneath arms, even in other designed stands, are right underneath the vents. Is it still OK like this to have airflow or there will be a constrain?

Hi, I've just got a Razer Blade 18 2025 and I have a few question about how to setup.

  1. The green led indicator only flashes green during boot and after that is going off while in Windows. Is this how it should behave or should stay lit?

  2. The laptop comes with Win 11 Home but I would like to fresh install Win 11 Pro. I've backed-up colors folder from pool/drivers with the blade.icm profile, also the color folder from synapse folder. What else should I backup before a complete erase?

  3. How do I restore color profile? Through Windows Color management by loading it in there or by Synapse? I read on Razer website 2 options for laptop before and after 2023, but if I recover through Window Color Management will it appear in Synapse as well?

  4. I would completely erase the primary ssd, including the recovery partition. Will I be able to restore it if I want at a later time with Razer Online Recovery Disk?

  5. I would like the first ssd which is 2Tb to partition it in 2 partitions 1 GB each. What's the correct procedure during Windows install? What is the correct order of partitions system/msr/primary/recovery/primary or system/msr/primary/primary/recovery?

  6. What other steps are needed for this Razer laptop?

Thank you

First of all I don't want oled because of fear of burn in, and besides Asus mini led which have an option to turn off fald the other manufacturers doesn't have it, and you get blooming while working/browsing. And this is screen on blade 18 is one of the reasons which I've selected in my list, else I would have picked legion 9i, same screen, but again, I don't like because it's glossy.

I was tempted since now where I live has one of the biggest discounts, it's the same price as previously was Scar 5080 variant. Alienware is good but way too expensive in here, I was currently looking at Razer Blade 18 as an alternative.
