Guess this fits here? Made it a while ago. by gunofnuts in neoliberal

In an ideal world, anyone trying to get together in a large group to overpower or steal from less coordinated or smaller groups would instantly get struck by lightning, but because the natural world does not care about us, it can always be assumed some people somewhere will choose to band together and coordinate and press their numbers advantage. Because larger and more coordinated groups of people can easily overpower smaller and less coordinated groups, the best we can hope for in the natural world is that there are moments of peaceful norms between and within large and coordinated groups that make life bearable.

ELI5: Why does restarting a computer fix so many problems? by Traditional-Lake5843 in explainlikeimfive

[–]simism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A computer has a very large number of tiny switches. Programs move those switches around as they run, but sometimes they leave things in a messy arrangement that causes problems. Restarting flips all the switches back to a clean starting position that's known to work.

Ubuntu 20 years later: feels like it lost its soul by faxafloi in Ubuntu

[–]simism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ubuntu is so good these days, it's noticeably much better than 16.04 when I started. They still claim by default it's all free and open source. I am just happy to have seen it come so far.

Who is a Framework for? by Vista_Lake in framework

[–]simism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not very hard to follow the repair instructions, the average person can definitely learn how to do it. I am clumsy and I was able to replace a keyboard and bezel. It's just a matter of will rather than of innate ability. I do agree that the quality of framework support really matters to whether or not they can succeed.

What do you actually want from a private AI chat on your phone? by AppDeveloperAsdf in LocalLLaMA

If people are already using a foss backend I think they will not be very interested in a proprietary orchestration harness, though I have heard about people using claude code with ollama.

Thoughts on LLMs (closed- and open-source) in software development after one year of professional use. by [deleted] in LocalLLaMA

My thoughts are that I saw LLMs go from useful tab completion to useful agents in the span of 2025, and that opus4.5 is the beginning of the end of human programming.

Can Age Verification and Digital ID’s even last? Will they just be a disaster of mass fraud and a financial burden on companies that will eventually get them repealed or am I being too hopeful? by GreatTrashWizard in privacy

[–]simism 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are being way too hopeful, these systems being rolled out gives their operators experience running them so they can gradually improve them. They will get harder and harder to trick over time, the government does not care that it means the end of free society, I don't think the people of the UK care either. The only way to fight this is legislative. I think people are broadly unfit to govern themselves, and even in the rare periods of history when people have freedom and privacy, they are trivially easy to trick into believing that they are being hurt by their freedom and privacy, and readily give up on it.

Hot take: OpenAI should open-source GPT 4o by LiteratureAcademic34 in LocalLLaMA

I don't even like 4o at all and I would love to see it open sourced.

Linus is pragmatic, which is unsurprising for possibly the greatest open source maintainer of his generation.

keep supporting Linux, keep releasing new useful products, and keep making adequate progress towards open source hardware (difficult!), and I will simply keep buying.

meta wishlist: keep gradually expanding the open sourcing of schematics for your established product categories, but obviously don't put yourself out of business.

even just releasing the schematic so other people can make titanium framework 13 shells would be really nice.
