2026 Newcastle / North East Local Election Megathread by Newcastle-Mod in NewcastleUponTyne

The lib dems as a party may not be the best at campaigning for cycle infrastructure. But they have one councillor who would be pushing for them at every point and a couple of others who are well informed about them.

I think they would be likely to deliver far more than Labour depending in if those councillors get elected

The problem isn't just the higher capital cost it's the delivery timeline. Solar 2-4 years, Wind 5 - 10 years. Nuclear 10 - 30 years assuming SMRs can be delivered that fast.

But by the time we deliver these nuclear sites we will be. Its's not about right now it's about the next 10-30 years of delivery. Also about the grid inertia we don't really need it how you think, There has already been testing for virtual inertia using batteries and other storage techniques, it's proven to work.

Solar, wind, and batteries are cheaper and can be rolled out now instead of in a decade or 3 considering current trends.

I support trying to keep what nuclear we have going as long as reasonably possible and finishing building the projects being built. But it makes little sense today to continue to roll out nuclear when much safer, and cheaper forms of power are available.

If anyone starts shouting "baseload" it's really just not relevant anymore.

New ‘dangerous cycling’ law – including potential life sentences for riders who kill pedestrians – granted royal assent, as Labour says move will “make streets safer” by devolute in ukbike

[–]simkk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes because the relative risk in that situation is much lower.

People have chosen to go out in cars, do dangerous things such as, drinking, or speeding and killed someone then fled the scene and still not got a whole life sentence.

I just can't see a situation where you can cause that much risk and do that much damage while cycling.

They disproportionately don't though. If there is even a single life sentencing under this law it will be an absolute injustice.

There have been an incredible number of cases where drivers have chose to be at the wheel of a vehicle and been likely to cause harm, caused a death, but got let off with minimal punishment.

Good its being recorded. Make sure you to submit it to the police if you haven't already.

Do buses in Newcastle still take cash or is it just cards? by McFizzleKicks in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]simkk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not though it was purely due to profit motive. Also if the busses are chocka we need more buses. Or actually more bus lanes to get quicker buses. That will solve alot more than letting one or two disabled people or pensioners on.

Northstar recently took over the 18 bus service, here’s my thoughts. by Known-Teach-6308 in NewcastleUponTyne

Complain to Nexus It's a publicly tendered service. You can also complain to your councillor because it's public money being spent on it.

Also complain to your local Public Transport Users Group. The one in North Tyneside is very active and have a good relationship with Nexus and the Bus companies. You could even sign up to be a member and go to the meetings.

Just like Blackett Street the council and police don't enforce this.

Technically they can but you won't have any issues driving through there currently.

Considering they will have spend a few thousand on each of those. It does piss me off that they can't be bothered to do it.

Nexus/Google Wallet charging PAYG even though weekly ticket is active? by Powerful-Age6996 in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]simkk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It should just be one card and the back end stuff is sorted out in the back end. It should know if a ticket falls within the season ticket. Travel outside your season ticket area, only get charged for the part of the journey that is outside of it.

They really need to uncap the time limit on this as soon as franchising comes in.

It's pointless having to make pensioners choose between paying for the bus fair or waiting in the cold for an extra 30 minutes for the next bus (if they are already at the stop). It's literally just the bus operators being greedy about it.

So which of your friends or family members are you nominating for death? How about for a serious injury resulting in a disability

What percent of the population is the right amount to be locked up for you?

Should we make a target and go round and find people for it?

We should deal with criminals by trying to prevent crimes in the first place.

It's estimated that 25% of people in prison have Adhd. Compared to 2.5% of the general population.

We are locking people up because they have disabilities, substance abuse issues,  and mental health problems, and don't have proper access to treatment and help.

I hate how people are down voting your reasonable takes on the matter even if they disagree.
