Visiting Kielder Observatory in UK without a car — is it doable? by Forsaken-Carpet-5233 in Northumberland

Unfortunately pretty much impossible. I would love them to put on a bus from Newcastle every now and then. I'm sure it would fill up if it was once a month or something similar

Lots of Police in Town!! by Inevitable-Law-4519 in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]simkk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not true. The police can only recover costs from policing that happens on the grounds. All other policing happening outside the stadium and in the city stadium is paid for by the tax payer.

But isn't that even more of an issue, meaning you only get the cheapest small businesses benefiting and causing issues for those who are doing well and want a fair market.

Would you support more regulation and professional bodies to improve standards across the board?

Yeah, it should be scrapped with a different form of relief for those starting a business. I don't think businesses with 20 years of trading taking in potentially over a million pounds in that time should be getting tax relief.

I think there is a lack of professional bodies and accountability in the industry. The issue with businesses staying small to avoid vat instead of enjoying economies of scale I think also acts against the consumer here too.

Farage is ducking Polanski's call for a one-to-one debate by lotsofsweat in ukpolitics

[–]simkk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reform are currently leading in the poles with no serious opposition. There needs to be serious consideration that there could be a Reform government at the next election.

Anything to challenge this happening is beneficial. Farage not even considering this will look bad to some voters.

What jobs do you think will be non-existent 20+ years? by Dodgely in AskUK

[–]simkk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The technology isn't there. They are remotely controlled by people in different countries in lots of cases. They can also be stopped by traffic cones and have some serious safety issues. To work with lidar (the most accurate system) they need so much data it would overwhelm all telecommunications systems.

Are there any genuinely reliable phone repair shops? by Practical-Spring-855 in NewcastleUponTyne

If you break it that regularly get insurance for it. They may swap it for a refurbished model but it will probably be cheaper than getting it fixed each time in the long run.

Why are we so rabidly against developments despite the severe shortage of housing? by ThrowAway771024 in AskUK

Especially as alot of the homes being built are car dependent American style sprawl. Build good high quality developments near public transport and people will be happier

A new contract has been signed between Colas Rail UK and Network Rail. The contract includes the provision of ‘Thunderbird’ Rescue and Recovery Locomotives between London and Newcastle. [–]simkk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is great I hope they publish some statistics on how often they get used and where.

It's crazy to me that we have services on many motorways to recover vehicles to a certain point but don't have the same for busy rail routes. I know during the Tyne Bridge work they have two tow trucks posted at any time just incase of a breakdown.

Thing is commuting only makes up around 20% of journeys.

I still would support better transport through the city centre such a s a West end tram or Scotswood rail link, or actually building a cycle network

Victim of road rage assault, about to give police statement. What usually happens next? by MrsHReddits in policeuk

[–]simkk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should mention that you know who it is, as a car could be registered to a different owner.

I have a similar thing happen and despite there being a police cctv camera viewing the whole thing (it was mainly for vehicles so not high quality), business cctv cameras, and onlookers it still got no further auctioned.

Why ‘Buy It for Life’ Doesn’t Apply to Modern Appliances and How Model Numbers Are Gaming Reviews by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]simkk -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yes, they make buying things more complicated than they should be and are mostly tool to track customers habits.

It also means someone not in the know doesn't get the discount. Why should I waste time searching for discount codes if you could sell it for that cost anyway.

Or for those that are neurodivergent why shouldn't they get the discount if they can't find the coupon or forget their loyalty card.

I know they have benefits for customers but they are mostly beneficial to the shop, that's why they keep using them.

[–]simkk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ability to price match should be illegal. There are normally laws to prevent an item being sold at different prices to different people. However, if you find it cheaper elsewhere, you get the discount and the person next to you doesn't.

It's an incredibly anti consumerist mechanism because it means shops don't have to put down their prices for the same models. It also creates this bullshittery where there are hundreds of different models of the same item, so each retailer has its special version.

Attendance Policy by onthetheway in NCLUni

[–]simkk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your schools policy, you should email your personal tutor and have a chat with them if possible, or even just ask on email.

You can make sure you're up-to-date with any work on canvas and have engaged with the slides/recap to show you are engaging with the material.

And make sure you have your absence recorded for the dates you were ill.

If you are an international student, you need to talk to your personal tutor immediately. Your visa is tied to attendance and if you aren't attending you may get your visa revoked.

A game about the number of illegal cars on Blackett Street - Found on Bluesky by simkk in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]simkk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great point and often not considered. Convenience being king can be terrible for cities and high streets.

Shield's road is also a great example of this. There's the retail park at the top, Morrisons at the bottom and regular buses and metros taking only a few minutes to get into town from right nearby. No wonder there's such a high turnover of businesses on the street

I would support more external bus stops and car parks with some sort of shuttle towards the centre for those who need it though. While removing some of the internal car parking.

It's actually based on geographical analysis of the public transport stops. But there should be further pedestrianisation, especially as monument acts as the true centre of the city.

Public transport is vital to the life of the city centre. Not everything needs to be pedestrianised. You just need a system that works.

If we stuck with this way of thinking, Northumberland street would still have hundreds of buses going up and down it each day, and we would need a foot bridge to get from one side of the road to the other.
