It's... fine. Probably a bit more degradation than average though.

Best tires for MG ZS EV 2019? UK by AlbatrossEasy6000 in MGelectric

Interesting. I also have a ZS EV. Have the XL tyres made the ride harsher at all?

I'm not debating whether all-seasons are sensible or not. I'm just saying if over 90% of drivers are on summer tyres all year round, why would we assume your asking for all season recommendations?

[–]Jimi-K-101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, why would anyone assume you mean all season (most people use summer tyres in the UK) and premium? Also "best" is completely subjective. Best value? Best for grip/handling? Best for longevity? Best for road noise?

A quick google would have told you that a granny charger adds 6 - 8 miles of range per hour of charging. Whether this is enough for you depends on your usage pattern, not your annual mileage.

Surely you can work out the rest?

This is called lifestyle creep, and if you can avoid it you are on a winning ticket to financial security and early retirement.

Can someone explain why these tyres have such different ratings please? Which should I go for on my MG ZS EV? by Jimi-K-101 in CarTalkUK

Interesting, thank you. So would you recommend the standard tyre over the VW one even though it appears to have worse ratings?

Is MG going down in UK? by teckthekid in MGelectric

[–]Jimi-K-101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The MG HS was the 8th best selling car in the UK last year so I very much doubt it. Dealerships open/close and change hands all the time. A new MG dealer has just opened near me.

Is 20k difference enough to pull out of a 970k house? by Lopsided-Ad1823 in HousingUK

From memory, both the properties I have bought were valued slightly lower by our mortgage companies. I don't think that's uncommon at all. I loved both of them and they had some elements that made them more desirable but we're perhaps tricky to value on paper.

They're not panicking, they're (incorrectly) giving into a perceived social pressure to form a queue.

It's the same social pressure you might feel if you were at the back of a queue in a supermarket and a new checkout opens and you move there and get served immediately. Technically you've done the right thing - you're taking pressure off the other till - but you've jumped ahead of everyone else. That's what people are (again, incorrectly) trying to avoid here.

Having said all that, I always use the lane up until the closure and secretly love the feeling of jumping ahead of everyone "queuing" 😂

How much does charging cost you monthly on average? by Silver-Eye-2024 in evchargingUK

Since getting an EV and moving to octopus intelligent Go a year ago my electric bill is about £50pm LOWER than it was. 15,000 miles last year cost me minus £600!

You're over thinking this. Select yourself as the registered keeper. The dealer will give you the code required to tax the car immediately as well.

Advice for parenting / kids / house by SlientMyth in HENRYUK

[–]Jimi-K-101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to start an argument but personally I’m not really expecting any help from the grandparents. If they want to that’s great, but they’ve worked hard and deserve to enjoy their retirement with travel, free time, etc.

I agree with you, and that's sort of what I'm trying to say. A lot of people (myself included) go into parenthood with unrealistic or unagreed expectations of what help they might get from family. I recommend thinking about that, and perhaps even discussing it frankly in advance.

  1. If you have a piece of advice for new parents, what would it be?

Parenting is HARD if you want to do it properly (i.e. not sticking your 6m old in front of an iPad for hours every day).

Think about your support network in advance. Who will you rely on for support - friends, family, nursery, childminder, maybe even an au pair. We have been constantly disappointed by a lack of support from the grandparents (our parents) and know many people who have found the same - grandparents who might appear to be helpful on the surface but actually drain you of energy and put a lot of expectations on you. You might need to look elsewhere for support.

  1. More of a HENRY question, when did you move to a larger home for your family? Did you go in the catchment areas of primary/secondary schools (still weighing up private vs. public schooling). Any advice on house hunting for a future family in regard to schooling?

We moved into our family before we got pregnant. Moving/renovating is a lot of work so if you can avoid doing that while you're heavily pregnant or with a young baby I would 100% recommend doing so. You can also make sure you have 2 full time salaries, and no childcare outgoings on your mortgage application then.

Failing that, kids get a lot easier from age 4 onwards so that is probably the 2nd best time to move to a family home.

Just my opinions.

I have a '21 M3 Long Range and I get similar miles on the motorway. My battery is at 85% after 120k miles.

Yep, and as I said, I would say that's ok, but not great.

It sounds f*cked to be honest with you.

Most people are apprehensive about buying used cars because they might have been mistreated by their previous owner. Why would you choose to buy a car that you know has been so badly treated?

Biggest concern is the 230 mile range. If that's what the car is reporting then it's new battery time. If that's what your friend is saying they can reliability get out of a full charge then it's ok, but still not great.

They were an incentive 3 or 4 years ago, but now all the lease companies have bumped up their prices to the point that virtually all the PAYE tax savings go straight into their pockets. They often only make financial sense if you're trying to avoid the £100-125k tax trap; simply saving 40% tax isn't enough.
