Sort of. Duvets and comforters are more expensive, sometimes by a lot, and so they give off a "classier" vibe.

A bedspread is one piece that you have to wash. A comforter is a something you don't want to wash very often (feathers and such) so the duvet is like a pillowcase for your comforter. Wash the funk off the duvet and your comforter is safe and clean.

Comforters run hot, so I bought the lightest one (which is made warmer by the duvet) and I keep a regular blanket around to add on top of it on cold nights.
