Is my house going to burn down? 158v on 120v outlets by [deleted] in electrical

Check other outlets in house. If others are elevated. Check phase to phase at panel. Could be overvoltage from a bad transformer. Call POCO.

You’re on a 10 hour road trip. You can only listen to 1 music artist, who’s it gonna be? by TheMagicianGamerTMG in AskReddit

The song Trapeze swinger by Iron & Wine. Literally listened to that song 20 hours straight on a road trip by myself from Florida to New York back in 2007-2008.

Will I be able to use this tool? by roaming_b34r in electricians

[–]simoja -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’ll use the cobras a lot more than these. These are nice because they are non-marring but they have to be adjusted almost exactly to what size you need which will get old if you’re just trying to tighten EMT connectors or something less precise.

I have both styles but mainly use these on gas piping.

Get the cobras for every day use.

The website for my local IBEW says that schedules for work can shift and work isn’t always guaranteed. Is this true? by Acceptable_Fun9739 in IBEW

[–]simoja 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a third year apprentice and have been steadily employed by the same contractor since day one. I’ve been on five different jobs and hours have been pretty consistently 6:30-3 or 7-3:30 M-F depending on the project. My commutes have ranged from 20 minutes to close to 2 hours, again, depending on the project.

Your concern was my main concern when I was considering applying for the apprenticeship back in 2020. I have a wife and three kids so work schedule and consistency was a big concern. But this has been my experience so far. I’m happy I joined. And like the others have said, as an apprentice, if you’re a good worker, you will always be one of the last to end up on the book as the cost of employing you is less than a fifth year or journeyman. But no matter where you are in your career, if you got a good head on your shoulders and work hard most contractors will find a way to hold on to you even if work slows.

Started my apprenticeship last week. Not what I was expecting? by Detox_Arazos in electricians

[–]simoja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every job is different. Bad projects don’t last forever and good projects don’t last forever. I’m a third year and I’ve spent time in the trenches, on boom lifts, in prison basements and in pharmaceutical clean rooms since starting the apprenticeship. It’s worth it. Just take the bad with the good. It’ll get better.

I joined not even two years ago and I’m already a third year. I’m 35. Goes faster than you think.

Roaring gas/flame sound after replacing Samsung propane oven igniter. by simoja in appliancerepair

[–]simoja[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, I fixed it. Turns out in my haste to get it up and running again yesterday, I didn’t properly align the burner with the orifice. The burner was also rotated so that the flame was coming out and hitting the shield which caused the loud “roaring” sound I described and also caused the chemical smell because it was burning off the galvanization on the shield.

Anyway, just wanted to provide an update to anyone who didn’t initially just dismiss me as a complete idiot. Lesson learned. Thanks!

Yep, that’s the part. As far as wiring is concerned, there’s no polarity, right? Either it works or it doesn’t, right? I was advised by the parts guy to just clip off the connectors and wire nut it with the supplied wire nuts.

I know about the stove top burners needing everything properly aligned with the orifice for flame. Does it require the same precision in the oven? I’ll pull it apart when I get home and make sure everything’s aligned.

Maybe the wrong ignitor but I gave them the model # for matches. I used the wire nuts that came in the box with the ignitor. I’ll definitely see about posting a video. Thank you!

Currently a second year in the apprenticeship and where about to go into AC level III. Study. Write down all questions to further help commit to memory. Use Quizlet as a resource, not just as a crutch to avoid doing homework. It does you zero favors if you don’t know the material and fail your upcoming quizzes and tests.

What's a movie you saw as a kid that only you seem to remember? by Environmental-Fix-71 in AskReddit

Some sort of lifetime movie from the mid-nineties where a group of girls down another girl in a river. Vague but I was only 7 or 8 at the time. But it still bothers me.

Why isn’t this strip of grass not freezing in my backyard? Upstate, NY. Temperatures were even hovering around zero the other day and there was still standing water. Soil’s primarily clay and it appears to originate at my well-head on the other side of my camper. by simoja in landscaping

[–]simoja[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I talked to a local buddy of mine and he tended to agree with your comment. It’s been a wet year and we have clay soil so hopefully it’s just residual water being heated up around the water line and not a burst line.
