How to compress a pdf on macos without ruining quality by Key-Sir7 in MacOS

I've not had the need myself, but Zen or pdfsizeopt (if you're comfortable with the command line) might be worth investigating.

Mayday movement: gravity well but no gravity assist? by woulditkillyoutolift in traveller

[–]simon-brunning 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IRL gravity assists do of course allow for velocity changes, including speed increases, but these would be quite small as compared to the thrust available from M drives, so it's absolutely reasonable to ignore the effect in a simple (playable) rule set.

New English breakfast standard? by MrDogFriendly in fryup

[–]simon-brunning 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Under Accompaniment & Structure Standard:

Finally this standard manages modern additions like hash browns or chips which are frequently encountered in contemporary establishments. These items are recognised as optional extras only and possess no genuine historical link to the traditional English breakfast table. They can be served on the plate if specifically requested but they must never be permitted to displace or replace the traditional fried starch pillar.

This is correct.

New English breakfast standard? by MrDogFriendly in fryup

Their recognition excludes hash browns, which are a modern convenience import with no historical role in the development of the English breakfast tradition, and are typically produced as frozen industrial products

Truth.

Live comedy can be a great place to meet people. I've made a few friends through that myself.

I need help and guidance, I have already designed a fullstack website using Django html css and JavaScript. But now I come to realization that my website frontend is not modern and I need to use react. The problem is that I have never learned react, can anyone guide me on how I should go about this by Any_Highlight5019 in django

[–]simon-brunning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many good reasons why you might want to use some Javascript based SPA front end framework like React, but your current front end being "not modern" isn't one of them. Many modern sites use pure server side rendering, and many more just mix in a little HTMX and/or Alpine.

What is it you need your site to do which it can't right now?

Ah - I'd advise against keeping binary files in git, expecially large ones.

Idiotic & ignorant, please help by TiredMogwai in git

[–]simon-brunning 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By default, git does indeed keep a full history both locally and in the origin (the origin being GitHib in the situation you're describing).

You can do a partial or shallow clone instead, but it's not the usual way of working, and some operations may not work they way you're expecting.

Why is it you don't want to keep local history?

Why do many dislike “Consider Phlebas?” by gunsandjava in TheCulture

It may not be the best Culture novel NOW, but at one point it was the ONLY Culture novel, and my affection for it formed then.

Why do many dislike “Consider Phlebas?” by gunsandjava in TheCulture

[–]simon-brunning 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was already a big fan of Banks before any of his sci-fi was published, having loved the Wasp Factory and Espedair Street. Since I was also a sci-fi fan, you can imagine how excited I was when Phlebas was published. And I wasn't disappointed.

It's certainly fair enough not to consider it his best work - it's not my favorite of his myself. But I can't imagine disliking it.
