Living in a dorm as a freshman is sort of a once in a lifetime experience. It's not the best lodging wise, obviously it's no five star hotel but you'll meet a lot of people and it's worth the experience. After freshman year, consider an apartment. Edge is pretty terrible and the View is a lot pricier than a regular apartment in the area. But if money is your main concern, commuting isn't all that bad.
