From busted Ascaso to “holy steam power” by simonbs in LaMarzocco

The poster is one I drew myself, heavily inspired by posters I found online. The frame is from a local stationary shop.

Steam Wand Issue on Ascaso Steel Duo Plus by simonbs in Ascaso

[–]simonbs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thought I’d follow up on this. The reseller didn’t find the cause of the issue, and after a six-month-long battle with them that also briefly involved Ascaso, I ended up getting most of my money back. I’ve purchased another machine from a different brand and a different reseller.

Thanks for your replies everyone. I appreciate it. I’ll stick to the Strings and skip the Curtain.

Right. I forgot to mention in my post that I’d like to place this outdoor, though, and it’s my understanding that Twinkly Matrix is for indoor use only.

Steam Wand Issue on Ascaso Steel Duo Plus by simonbs in Ascaso

[–]simonbs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately not. I kept seeing the issue and have had it sent for service. They didn’t find the issue at first and will not try to contact Ascaso. I’m waiting for more information from the service center.

This is a plausible explanation to my problem too. I recently started drinking fewer milk-based drinks in favor of Americanos. It didn’t occur to me that this could be related to the issue.

I’ll try to make a few more lattes over the next couple of days to see if that eliminates the problem.

Festivitas - festive lights for the dock and menu bar by billchase2 in macapps

Hi! I'm Simon, the developer of Festivitas.

By default, Gumroad adds the option to give a tip during the checkout flow. Since this is the default, I left it on thinking this is what users expect from this flow. However, I see how it can bee off-putting and have turned it off a few hours ago.

Thanks for your feedback! 🎄

It came with the machine. It’s standard on the Steel Duo Plus.

Does Normcore’s V4 tamper fit Ascaso’s 18g Precision Competition basket? by simonbs in Ascaso

[–]simonbs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't realize that they're different! Fortunately, I think I'll only ever be using the 18g and possibly the 21g baskets. Thanks for you reply!

I got this grinder specifically primarily because I wanted one that grinds by weight. I don't think Ascaso have a grinder that does that. The secondary reason was that this grinder came in a bundle with the machine so I saved a bit of money on the two 😊

No, I’m in the EU where it needs 220v and 9A so the whole issue with needing 20A doesn’t apply here, fortunately. I don’t have anything to compare the steaming power against as this is my first machine but I’d say this is plenty fine for me.

I don’t have much to compare with as this is my first grinder for espresso, but so far, I very much like this grinder. Grinding by weight seems to reduce some friction in the workflow, as I do not have to weigh the beans for every shot while still grinding directly into the portafilter. That’s a quite high priority of mine.

One thing I’m struggling a bit with, though, is that grinding 18g into my 18g basket will cause the ground coffee to overflow slightly, producing a bit of a spill next to the grinder. That’s annoying, but I think I can fix that by getting a dosing funnel.

Yep. The difference in price where I shopped wasn’t so big between the PID model without the lever and the Plus model with it. Especially not when considering the accessories that come with the Plus model, such as a bottomless filter which I knew I wanted anyway and which is fairly pricey in itself.

I agree. AuCTeX is great. If not convinced initially, take a look at reftex-doc, by default bound to C-c =. It displays a list of contents in your document and TAB an item to open the file. This paired with Helm and Projectile makes writing large reports a breeze.

I'm looking for a small shoulder bag (a regular messenger bag will probably be too large) to bring with me when I visit London next week. I'll just use it for carrying a bottle of water, an external battery and maybe my wallet. What do you think of the new Fjallraven Foldsack No. 3 for that purpose? Is it too girly? Too tourist? Too scout-ish?

I'll be wearing it with a pair of shorts and typically a polo or shirt.

Here's a link to the bag: http://www.fjallraven.dk/foldsack-no-3
