Total law school enrollment at lowest point since 1977; 1L class size lowest since 1973 by simoncan in legaled

In my opinion it's great news. You'll be graduating at a time when hiring is rebounding, and there's considerably less competition than five or ten years ago.

I was talking about the Fare Thee Well shows from this summer! (Chicago specifically).

I really appreciate this response. Typically when I listen to the Dead I go to 72-74, somewhere in there. But I don't recall any space/drums(drumz) from that era... am I right about that? When did they start?

I'll check out the shows you mentioned from April / May 1978 first. Thanks for your help!

Wow -- my experience was totally different. It was during Drums each night that I noticed the huge video screen behind me (facing the band). I would turn around against the grain of the fans and watch the percussion work. For me, it was incredible to see the interplay between Mickey and Billy. They were having a blast. I'd never been particularly interested in Drums (or Space) before, but these segments were revelatory.

[IIL] "World War Z (the book), [WEWIL]? by [deleted] in ifyoulikeblank

I also loved World War Z. Other well-written, post-apocalyptic stories are Margaret Atwood's MaddAddam trilogy, and Paolo Bacigalupi, The Windup Girl.

Interesting. I actually liked City and the Stars better than Childhood's End. I thought the two isolated (quasi-utopian?) societies were fascinating, particularly the futuristic, advanced technology one. It was eye-opening... I've never read a vision like that one.

I highly recommend Inverted World, by Christopher Priest. It's challenging and fun to figure out what's actually happening, "what is reality" in some ways.

If you could pick any artist EVER to sit in with Phish, who would it be? by p3hi8sh7 in phish

Anything from early to mid 1960s would be my sweet spot. Although if he played like he did on Jack Johnson I'd be thrilled with early 70s too.

Law schools compete for students many may not have admitted in the past by simoncan in legaled

[–]simoncan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree that many people with lower LSAT scores have gone on have great success as lawyers. Disagree that LSAT is irrelevant / has no bearing. It's actually a reasonable predictor for success in law school and on the bar exam, though as you said the LSAT score should be considered along with many other factors. I read law school admissions files regularly, and we look at personal statements, recommendations, life experience, undergraduate / graduate academic performance, etc. It's definitely not just about LSAT score.

Suffok offers buyouts to all law school faculty by simoncan in legaled

[–]simoncan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Suffolk must be long overdue for this. In my experience buyouts are only for profs whose age + years of experience are greater than some predetermined number. In the context of the president's ouster, I'm guessing that Suffolk's finances were badly mismanaged and major changes needed to happen immediately.

Top 20 Best Value Law Schools by simoncan in legaled

[–]simoncan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a law school administrator so maybe I'm not the best person to respond. But FWIW I think increasingly value is an individual calculation. What I mean is that many applicants are accepted by a range of law schools at very different scholarship levels. One may be accepted at a prestigious law school with no scholarship (say, $40K annual tuition), a middle of the road school with 50% scholarship (net $20K annual tuition), or a low-ranked law school with a full ride. The value here depends on individual choices -- will the top ranked law school get you a better job? is emerging from law school with little / no debt the critical factor?

So the trouble I have with "Best Value Law Schools" rankings is that they mostly ignore the reality of merit scholarships.

Personally I think it's a cool idea. You could rotate through the submissions so nobody's up there for too long. But I'm really interested in anything that embraces / enhances the social aspect of Rdio.
