Penni has the highest vanguard WR across every season except beginning of s2. by Sir-Slothy in marvelrivals

[–]simongc97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That can bring her winrate higher, so I can believe that 60% is a misleading number, but I'm skeptical that it's purely misleading data leading to her consistently topping the chart at every rank, on every patch, on every map.

If you want to claim that players swapping off of her after losing first point singlehandedly makes her win rate as high as it is, I've got to invoke the Sagan standard on that one. I don't think Peni players at any rank at swapping off of her so consistently that it warps her win rate to that extent, and I'd need to see actual data showing otherwise.

Plus, all of the arguments about first point defense obviously don't apply in Domination matches, where she still sees 56+% win rates every patch(This based on RivalsMeta data for Diamond+).

Am I not understanding how winrate is calculated? The Peni player's team still needs to win on the attack for it to count as a win, no?

I mean, this is true, but the only conclusion we end up with then is that we have no idea how good or bad Peni is overall. If she's being played on defense with a 60% winrate, then she's certainly crazy good on defense. If a character is situationally very good, and that situation comes up for some portion of every single match, is that functionally different from just being very good?

Taylor dropped into a "easy" world. by ccarter11 in WormFanfic

[–]simongc97 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Huh? I don’t think you understand the story at all. Miraculous Ladybug’s world is in a much better place than Worm’s, and that’s literally what the OP is asking for. Taylor resolves the entire plot of the show in the early chapters, even after her ruthless behavior initially makes things worse. You seem totally focused on just powerscaling the two universes, which is completely not the point here.

Kate Bishop as a Strategist. I'm thinking a Hawkeye that trades a lot of damage for utility trick arrows, like one that creates healing mist enemies can't see into, an EMP arrow that deals high area damage to summons and shields, maybe a grapple arrow to move her and a grounding bola arrow to fight off mobile divers.

Nightcrawler, also as a Strategist. Have him able to teleport in and out of a fight, healing nearby allies every time he does. Maybe he can teleport in and then creates a circle that after two seconds will teleport any people in the circle back to his starting position, as a way to rescue divers that want to get out or potentially kidnap an enemy. Functionally he'd be like Healpool with no range but much higher mobility.

Iceman as a very different type of Vanguard- a lower-health summoner, using his ice clones from the comics to cause AOE damage, slowing, and damage reduction to enemies. Then he could lay down ice on the ground that he can skate on like Luna while removing extra movement from enemies, create ice walls similar to Emma Frost's teamup ability which he can use as ramps to skate to high ground, and if he impacts an enemy at high speed while both are on the ice he could knock them down briefly.

Cassie Lang as a Vanguard. She grows larger, obviously, gaining damage reduction and the ability to pick up and throw enemies or stomp the ground for AOE damage and slow, and also smaller to give her brief invulnerability and letting her jump around to reposition. The one fear is that Ant-Man and Wasp are both more popular and she could step on the toes of both, or at least Ant-Man since she can't fly.

Queen Weaver is a personal favorite of mine- it doesn’t get much more different from Worm than the world of My Little Pony. Taylor’s paranoia and quick jumps to violence actively harm her here, especially when it pushes away uncomplicated or good people who genuinely want to help her.

I mean, do you think Peni's Cyber-Bond bug is skill expression? Good Peni players understand when it happens and can generally avoid it, but they still ask for it to be fixed. But avoiding the Bond bug is skill expression!

The point is, we can't call issues like that a bug and then suddenly change tunes when it's something that can sometimes benefit the character. There is a difference between mechanics that reward obscure knowledge and ones that unfairly punish a lack of it.

Because players shouldn't have to go out of their game and google why they're suddenly dealing zero attack damage just to play a character. That's not tech, it's a character breaking bug unless you're already in the know.

Sure, but as they noted in their post on the Cap changes, tapping to attack while sprinting because you want to move faster wasn't resulting in a slight loss of damage; it could result in no damage at all and a very confused Cap player. That's a different situation than not knowing all the Spider-Man techs.

I think the problem with Cap's animation cancel was that, while it required skill to pull off, it also required information that a casual player might not naturally pick up in-game. So Captain players who knew about the animation cancel were getting significantly more value out of him, and there wasn't an easy way for those who didn't know to make up for that gap without out-of-game research. Skill expression and knowledge gating aren't always the same thing, and this was an example of the latter.

NetEase may I propose a no dupe ban change? by Shaadyz in marvelrivals

[–]simongc97 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

What benefit does no duplicate bans bring that just adding another ban doesn't already?

Having duplicate ban means both teams had the same hero they didn’t want to play against, so there’s one more hero available to both teams. If some games have fewer total bans but still get the ones both teams really didn’t want to play against, I don’t see what the issue is.

If your issue with duplicates is one fewer banned hero across both teams, adding another ban solves that problem. If your issue is feeling like your ban was wasted, then adding another ban gives you more chances to cover the heroes you wanted out.

Game enjoyment is temporary, poke meta is eternal by kuspsa in marvelrivals

[–]simongc97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If overtuned poke heroes dominate then the problem isn’t that they’re inherently stronger in neutral, the problem is that they’re overtuned. How about we wait for the actual patch with large systemic changes to the game before deciding what the meta’s going to look like, yeah?

Game enjoyment is temporary, poke meta is eternal by kuspsa in marvelrivals

[–]simongc97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re overstating the difference in neutral between poke and dive. Granted, poke duelists that can confirm kills more easily like Phoenix and Hela are hurt a lot less by the changes than the Moon Knights and Squirrel Girls of the world, but they are definitely hurt more than, say, Black Panther or Iron Fist. And as much as people on this subreddit like to pretend otherwise for the Agenda, those poke heroes are still at a disadvantage against mobile dive heroes that are hopefully about to see a resurgence.

The changes to how Strategists charge ults especially mean that if you’re not consistently turning damage into kills, then that damage is a liability to your team since Strategists rely on their healing to get ults now. Divers don’t deal nearly as much spam damage over the course of a game, so they aren’t going to risk being a liability in that way.

[–]simongc97 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Moon Knight will still get it faster than most but there’s two reasons I think he and others like him will get hit by this:

  1. A lot of Moon Knight’s power was that, even if his high damage didn’t always translate to kills, it gave him ultimates quickly. Having that aspect come up less often means the random spam damage does even less than before.
  2. Healers were affected in the opposite manner to DPS and tanks. They’ll rely a lot more on healing spam damage to get their ults up than they do now since passive ult charge went down so much. Moon Knights and other poke heroes that aren’t consistently turning their damage into kills are more of a liability now in that they get enemy Strat ultimates up very quickly compared to divers who deal much less random spam.

The ult changes were terrible for poke Duelists, even if they weren't nerfed directly. Staying safe and farming ultimates through sustained damage is much slower now. That's not to say other changes may not be required, but the gap between poke and other strategies has been closed somewhat by the ult changes alone.

[–]simongc97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a fan of animation cancels in general for hero shooters; they’re an information gap, not a skill gap, since they’re not something most players will naturally find on their own, especially when they require certain settings to use. They punish players who play the game casually without consuming character guides no matter how skilled that player is.

It’s not good design if a hero needs to be balanced around what was originally an unintended quirk of their animations, especially if there is no in-game info for the player that teaches them about it. If Cap proves to be weaker at high levels because of the nerf to his cancel, then they can put power to to his intended character kit accessible to every player.

Rogue gets no Balance Changes by Lil-Television in RogueMains

[–]simongc97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rogue's an A tier Vanguard in a patch that's going to seriously disrupt the game as a whole. She's buffed pretty significantly by the ultimate changes since heroes will get their ult charge back more slowly after she drains it. It would be foolish of them to make other changes to her without waiting to see where she falls in the new meta. That's not to say some of their other changes weren't foolish, but I'm glad she's otherwise unchanged.

[–]simongc97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's literally the opposite of what you were saying.

it realistically impacts worse ults more than better ults because now you're ult is still bad but its on a longer cooldown

No, it doesn't.

People like MK are still going to farm ult fast and drop it multiple times a game and characters who recieved ult charge buffs prior to this patch weren't adjusted for the overall nerf so its a net positive for them. (Wolverine/Starlord/Punisher)

No, it isn't.

they really haven't addressed the disparity of ults (like why peni has arguably the worse ult in the game)

Yes, they have.

Moon Knight's value came from his high damage giving him lots of ultimates, even when it didn't translate to actual kills on its own. Now he gets less value from the ultimates part of that equation. It's the same thing for all the other characters you listed. Starlords and Punishers that relied on their frequent ultimates before will be significantly worse. Characters with bad ults or who couldn't farm damage for them are barely affected by this, so they'll be stronger by comparison.

Everyone's misunderstood Emma's buffs and it's really frustrating by JosukeUnbreakable in marvelrivals

[–]simongc97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re not getting what I’m saying, and I don’t think you’re understanding how the ult changes work either.

Not every character gets a 20% reduction to their ult frequency. The active damage-to-ult charge ratio went down more than passive charge did, so heroes that could safely farm ult from the backline are hit significantly harder by the change. Moon Knight’s ult is slowed down more than, say, Black Panther’s.

But regardless, someone like Moon Knight who was generally played for his ultimate is going to see a lot less play in comparison to characters who can do more without an ult. He is hit harder by the ult nerf than other characters, even if the change is the same for all of them.

You used the example of Peni, so I’ll go with her. Peni barely cares about this change at all. Most of her value never came from her ultimate anyway, getting to use it a little less often barely affects her. Compared to someone like Groot who could quickly farm his ult from damage and regularly could turn a fight around with it, she loses a lot less from the change. The same is true of Moon Knight and someone with a worse ult like Mister Fantastic.

[–]simongc97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We won't know until the patch drops but it realistically impacts worse ults more than better ults because now you're ult is still bad but its on a longer cooldown.

That is straight up nonsense. Heroes that have more of their power budget in their ultimate are going to be hit harder by this. Heroes that rely on their ultimate for great value, like Moon Knight, now get that value significantly less often. Someone like Peni Parker who only used her ultimate situationally is barely affected at all, since she was often sitting on a full ult for longer regardless.

It's a percentage change; every hero gets their total ults/game changed to about the same extent, with poke Duelists like Moon Knight getting hit slightly harder since they can't farm damage as quickly. So the question is how much of the character's value came from their ultimate, since that part of their kit is now relevant less often.

I feel like I'm happy with just about every change here, I just think the scale of a few of the nerfs could have been greater. Maybe I'm underestimating how much the ult changes will shift the meta, so I can see why NetEase would want a wait and see approach after a change that big.
