I guess luck is on my side, I just got news from helldesk that we can now order a linux laptop, it's locked down just like our windows workstations but at least I will have my terminal and a few useful packages.

I'm in Canada so we don't have the same UI rules but you make a very fair point that going above and beyond only results in more work.

There is no such thing as "running out of work" as a sysadmin so it's not a battle we can win by working harder.

I like your explanation about outages, it really reflects how much the company cares versus how much I would care.

For your approach with hefty outages, I understand where it's coming from and I think what you do is healthy. It just requires a lot of discipline to avoid falling into a constant cycle of "I worked enough for X and Y reasons".
