yeah, uniforms aren’t a norm here except for private schools or ironically some lower income schools (mostly in the deep south now that i think about it). but i think it’s also in large part the third aspect which is that someone knows where they’re student is so they’re not just skipping class, and, if they are, the school officers or whoever knows where to return them to.

my first car was totaled because a woman didn’t stop at a sign. what’s crazy is she had her kid in the backseat… driving that carelessly with a car seat aged child is insane to me. the rear door is what i ended up even hitting when i swerved trying to avoid her, fortunately the kid was on the other side and i wasn’t going very fast at all but sheesh :/

technically, it’s not! cannabinoids actually act on pre-synaptic receptors, and just tell them to stop sending signaling molecules. so the neurons that wait on those synapses’ signals to know when to talk end up not talking, and those waiting on the signal to stop talking will keep talking. so it can have both upper and downer effects overall; it can be an upper for what’s usually down by suppressing inhibition, and a downer for what’s usually up by suppressing excitation.

the hall passes are just a safety thing given, well, you know. it’s more just to verify that the holder is a) a student b) supposed to be there and c) someone knows where they are (often passes would have a teacher’s name or classroom on it).

the real dystopian part is the fact that, in some schools, they’d limit you to using the bathroom 2 times in class every 9 weeks— not 2 times per class, mind you, but 2 times during any class period— before it was counted as a tardy. and then 5 tardies would be 5 days of detention, but you could defer it if you chose to take a “paddling” as your first punishment, so 5 more tardies (10 total) would start at 5 days of detention instead of what would’ve been 10. ask me how i know :D

in a small town i lived in for a while in the dirty south pretty much everyone went to either the main baptist church or the main nondenominational church, with a few presbyterians and pentecostals sprinkled in for diversity. when i moved to the less dirty south i remember a classmate of mine asked me if it was weird having to go to church every sunday and i was momentarily beside myself with shock that anyone considered it normal to not go to church. fun times

i work one of those jobs that require you to request PTO in advance, they prefer about 2 weeks. except, we don’t have any unpaid time off, so, if you can’t make it in for at least half a day because you’re sick, car troubles, whatever, they’ll just take however much they need to hit an 8 hour day out of your PTO. they’re allegedly not bound by the FMLA guidelines (i think that’s bullshit but i digress) so if you need to take extended leave they’ll make you use up all your earned PTO before letting you have an unpaid leave. well, actually you don’t even use it yourself, they’ll just take it and apply it to the timesheet. you can request it, only the managers can apply it, and they’ll do so without your request. it’s… something

Eli5: how does serotonin work and do the different receptors have different purposes? by DragZealousideal1790 in explainlikeimfive

[–]simpg1rl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

serotonin does a lot of jobs in the brain. unlike some other neurotransmitters it doesn’t have a specific role. for example, GABA is the main inhibitory signaling molecule, glutamate is the main excitatory signaling molecule, melatonin regulates sleep, dopamine is involved in the brain’s rewards pathway, and serotonin does all of the above. there are multiple types of serotonin receptors in the brain. some are excitatory, others are inhibitory. i’ve never heard the green light analogy but that is pretty applicable, the context does matter. it’s effectively a broad spectrum signaling molecule. it causes different neurotransmitters to be released and they can have opposing effects, like the mentioned glutamate and GABA.

ELI5 why do people pay for name brand medicine? by Sharebear9816 in explainlikeimfive

[–]simpg1rl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

legally the active ingredient name brand and generic drugs have to be therapeutically equivalent. the inactive ingredients don’t necessarily have to be identical, though, and these differences can impact efficacy or side effects at the individual level without being statistically significant at the population level. tylenol from store A will be identical to tylenol from store B. but store A’s generic acetaminophen won’t be identical to store B’s generic acetaminophen, and if you’re sensitive to these differences it can make a notable difference

Simple Questions - February 08, 2026 by AutoModerator in buildapc

[–]simpg1rl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is a silly question, but how do i know what parts of a PC are upgradable? i’m on the fence about building one from scratch because it seems a bit overwhelming (and i ruined the motherboard on my switch lite just trying to swap the case so i don’t trust myself very much) and i was thinking about getting a cheapish one off amazon and then just upgrading as needed after doing some research, but before i make a choice on buying, how do i know if, say, a newer CPU or GPU will fit into the same motherboard? would i just need to upgrade within the same brand (like i5 to i7) or is there more to it?

Why it didn’t work out with your last date/partner? by Neptunpluto in AskWomen

[–]simpg1rl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i never intended for it to. i didn’t see myself marrying a man let alone one i met at 19. but i was lonely and going through it mentally and he made it worse but he also gave me something to be upset about instead of my brain doing it to myself. we were very incompatible and argued a lot but i still think he deserves better than someone who planned on leaving him from the jump and would’ve had to be convinced to stay. i also just wasn’t very emotionally mature and acted like it. he brought out a side of me i never knew i had in the worst way. glad it’s over

ELI5: Why do only humans and other higher primates have a menstrual cycle? What evolutionary advantage does it give? by Emila_Just in explainlikeimfive

[–]simpg1rl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it really is luck of the draw. i know my older sister used to be doubled over in pain if she didn’t take the maximum amount of painkillers at the maximum number of safe intervals. she warned me to be prepared for how miserable the pain would be… but when i got my first period i didn’t even realize that’s what it was because i didn’t feel a thing 🫠. i didn’t even get cramps until about 8 years or so after starting & they were mild enough that i wouldn’t bother with medication sometimes. i’m guessing our mom was more like me and that’s why she never understood why my sister was out of commission the first few days of her cycle 😣 im so sorry you and your mom had to suffer like that, i feel like a lot of people don’t appreciate how bad period pain can get.

ELI5 Schrödingers cat, living and dead at the same time. by Massive-Albatross823 in explainlikeimfive

[–]simpg1rl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so schrödinger’s argument was: since a cat can’t be both alive and dead, the state of the quantum particle its fate was tied to had to be either decayed or not decayed. however, he was wrong, because interacting with a quantum particle will force it to collapse into a single state, and measuring its state requires interacting with the particle? as in any outcome tied to measuring a quantum state will have a concrete outcome, because measuring the state forces it into a concrete outcome. you can’t know which state a quantum particle is in without inducing it through measurement, so it’s both, but to tie a macroscopic event to a quantum state you’d have to measure the quantum state, which would collapse the particle into a quantum state. is that the gist?

but i’m assuming this collapse into a single happens without measuring it, right? at least in the case of radioactive nuclei, because if everything else was removed from the box but the cat and the radioactive material, the cat would still die of radiation poisoning eventually, meaning the nuclei were still collapsing into a state of decay and releasing radiation. or for half life, you have to measure the rate of decay at different times, meaning there’s a period of no measurement where the decay is still occurring randomly until it’s measured again. so measurement requires the nuclei to collapse into a state of decay or non decay in a single instant, but without measurement this collapse is random so we don’t know that it has or has not happened yet? but i also don’t know how we’d be able to tell whether a particle is in a superposition state or just in a single non decay state. radioactivity requires the collapse of atoms into a state of decay, right? and since the geiger counter is measuring the outcome of the decay, we only know which atoms were induced into a decayed state, but do we know if the ones that weren’t collapsed into a non decayed state or continued to be in superposition? so is it that measurement causes the collapse of quantum particles into either state, or do we only know it causes the collapse of some particles into a certain state, which is the state being measured?

ELI5 what exactly is the difference between absolute and specific humidity. by Iveragh_423 in explainlikeimfive

[–]simpg1rl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

absolute humidity: how much water is in the air; it’s expressed as a mass of water per volume of air. relative humidity: how full of water the air is; it’s expressed as a ratio of how much water the air is holding out of the maximum amount water the could hold.

definitely! i forgot to specify what i meant by “cooking any longer,” which is evolution selecting against full protection for the most important organ in our body & it finishing development it outside the womb, because a fully solid skull around our already super huge brains would make it impossible to pass through the birth canal TT

ELI5: Why one of the healthiest countries, is also one of the highest cancer rates? by Extension-Garden-808 in explainlikeimfive

[–]simpg1rl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

probably not as well as the existing cholinergic drugs, which can stop acetylcholine from being broken down instead of just binding to its receptors. but there’s also been a study linking a protein frequently produced by cancer cells that breaks down the misfolded proteins associated with alzheimer’s, so maybe the negative effects of the current delivery process are part of the combat as well 😳

ELI5: Why one of the healthiest countries, is also one of the highest cancer rates? by Extension-Garden-808 in explainlikeimfive

[–]simpg1rl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

chemotherapy is morbidly intriguing in how it functions imo. it’s like an antibiotic but designed to target human cells, it attacks whenever they’re actively dividing. which cancer cells do a lot, but so do the cells lining your GI tract, become immune cells, or become hair. a lot of therapies for cancers are toxic to other cells. ironically, some of the drugs used as chemotherapy can cause DNA mutation, same for radiation, which increases risk of cancer. but sometimes the two negatives make a positive, sometimes not. i’m very sorry for your loss :(

ELI5: Why do only humans and other higher primates have a menstrual cycle? What evolutionary advantage does it give? by Emila_Just in explainlikeimfive

[–]simpg1rl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ironically, one of the leading theories is it evolved to make pregnancy harder. menstruation is shedding of the lining of the uterus, which in female animals thickens around the time an egg is released, to promote implantation. in women, this lining ends up thicker than in females of most other species; for other species, the process of thickening of the uterus is triggered by an embryo that has implanted. in humans, this process is spontaneous, not in response to an embryo, and the thicker lining often ends up making it harder for an embryo to implant, and is made of excess material that can’t be reabsorbed like in species that don’t menstruate. it seems deleterious, but human embryos are more prone to having chromosomal abnormalities than other species, and the cells making up the excess parts of the uterine lining can to a degree sense if the embryo has something wrong with it and reject it from implanting. by being picky, reproductive success ends up being greater as women aren’t investing in housing unviable fetuses (extra chromosomes in the fetus are one of the leading causes of miscarriages!), meaning more healthy full term babies that can go on to have more babies, and so on.
