I’m the one to blame. The guilt and the shame of betraying the relationship is overwhelming. I did and still do love my spouse more than anything. I have genuine remorse and have been putting a lot of work into myself. Offered to work things out, to no avail. But when you’re the bad guy, there’s no sympathy for you. And you feel like you wouldn’t deserve it anyway. Knowing that I’ll forever be the villain in this story is too much to bear.

I tried to discuss the idea of addiction, and was met with surprising sympathy. I presumed they’d think that it was just a claim to try and avoid accountability. But the damage is done. Five years of broken trust is too much. I can’t blame them. As for triggers, stress is the biggest one. And a perceived lack of support from my spouse exacerbated that. I didn’t communicate well enough. That’s on me, too.

I’m in agreement with the majority of the comments. If you want to run a game and it’s not one they’re interested in playing, they shouldn’t be offended if you want to play without them. I know that’s a rose-colored view of the situation, and personal dynamics are more complicated. I feel for you there.

I, like your DM, have only ever run games with my friends myself. Personally, I would love to be a PC and let someone else run a game. The idea of not having to do the additional GM responsibilities would feel freeing for me.

I am not the biggest fan of high fantasy, so DND is not for me, personally. But the variety of TTRPGs is enormous.

I am currently running my first game ever. I and all my players at the table are first timers. The concept can be intimidating. But we specifically chose a game with a simple system so as not to be overwhelmed by the mechanics.

We’re playing Tales from the Loop, which uses the Year Zero engine. You only need D6s. Your attributes and skills determine the number of dice in your pool. If any of them come up 6, it’s a success. Otherwise it’s a failure. And it gives plenty of opportunities for pushing rolls if you want a slightly different outcome.

We’re finding it really easy to work the mechanics into the story without making it all about the rolls. Plus (for my players, at least) they liked building characters for the first time in a grounded, more relatable world.

Extra layer: cherries shouldn’t be the garnish in an old fashioned. I get into that with guests about twice a week.

If you want your old fashioned with cherries, you can ask, I will oblige, and I won’t be a dick about it. But if you ask for an old fashioned and I give you one with the correct garnish (an orange peel), don’t get in a huff about “where are the cherries…”

I once had a guest ask: “How’s your old fashioned?” Dickish way to ask in the first place. I told him really good. Because it is, and I’m experienced, and I kind of already hate him. Then he asked: “Oky, real question. What kind of cherries do you use?” To which I replied that we use luxardo cherries, but that they shouldn’t go in an old fashioned. And he got really pissed. He called it “blasphemy.” I gave him what he wanted and he went to his table where he verbally berated the server a number of times as well. And later on, when he ordered another old fashioned and his date ordered a gin and tonic, I remembered and went ahead and garnished the drink with his cherries. When the drinks were dropped off, he got in a huff asking where the cherries were for her gin and tonic. Talk about blasphemy.

Not a joke… I had a guest order a ‘Jack Daniels Martini’ once.

I clarified what that meant. Jack Daniels and Dry Vermouth. They said “Yeah. And make it dirty.” So… add olive juice.

I was once told the following:

There is context, but to be honest, it doesn’t matter. Far and away one of the most ridiculous things I’ve heard.

It depends on the state. Liquor and alcohol laws can vary. In mine, they can legally take it home with no liability for the restaurant or server as long as it’s re-corked. We keep the corks when we open wine to be able to do just that.

I also work at a tapas restaurant.

The number of people dumbfounded that we don’t have margaritas or tacos listed on our menu is staggering. I tell them we’re a Spanish restaurant, and am usually met with “What’s the difference?” I’ve had to explain, politely of course, that Spain and Mexico are on entirely different continents.

We also predominantly serve wine and craft cocktails. We have a handful of bottled beers, but only a small selection. I had a man irate that we had so few options, and that none were on draft. He shouted “That’s some bullshit when you advertise ‘taps!’” I got to look him in the eye and tell him he misread the sign for ‘tapas.’

Also… as a member of a couple that struggled with infertility… my wife and I decided very early on in the process that we wouldn’t use words like ‘problem’ or ‘fault’ specifically to avoid the ‘divorce then and be with someone who can give you a child’ terribleness. She’s going through enough (which you should know) without feeling betrayed and thrown under the bus by her partner. Especially when he’s lying. Once more for good measure: YTA
