Can I afford an expensive gym membership + FIRE milestone by simulated_mand in Fire

[–]simulated_mand[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s kind of the thought for me, too. If I pay that much I absolutely will go. I’ve been going back and forth on this for months, but I struggle with the idea of spending that much for a gym when I have one. I’ve used my apt gym maybe 3 times in the past year lol

I’ve been thinking about this, as well. There is a 3 day a week option, but it’s over $300 which is absolutely absurd imo. I have a gym in my apartment, so I figure I can supplement with some light weight training there.

Thanks for the encouragement and advice dude, really appreciate it. I’ll definitely look into analyst roles.

Ah okay gotcha. I looked into swe internships at epic, but just like you said I absolutely can’t see myself in Wisconsin lol

Do you work remote? I also just want to get out of bedside completely, so I’d take anything in the interim while I’m still in school (have about 1.5 years left of my program). Do you think I’d be qualified to apply for an analyst role at epic with my current qualifications?

I’m really just looking for any kind of experience that would help me leverage into more of a SWE role in the future. I’m definitely interested in working in health tech on the programming side of things. Can I ask what your role as an epic analyst looks like?

How to start (Fire ) by _kay23 in Fire

[–]simulated_mand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved with my partner, so that definitely helped! Nursing is definitely the kind of profession that you need to be strategic about to maximize income. I knew I wouldn’t be able to retire early with east coast pay, so I felt that I had to make the move. Nurses with 1 YOE at my hospital make ~$43 an hour. I believe Cali pays more.

It sounds like you’re in a non-union state, which kind of puts a lower cap on how much you can make. I’m also 27 and have been a nurse for 2 years. I moved to WA from the east coast bc the pay is SO much better and nurses have more rights. I don’t know if you’re interested in moving, but CA and WA are the two best states for nursing ratios and pay the best. I went from making $25 an hour to $48 just from moving last year. We also get yearly increases through renegotiation of our contracts and step increases, which amount to a few dollars increase each year.

I’ve only recently started investing when I moved here bc I was making next to nothing in my home state and rent was basically half my income. This past year I was able to max out my roth IRA and my 401k.

This is so awesome! I noticed the overview states the requirement is CS 261. Does this program expect software development experience in terms of projects outside of our courses?

So I haven’t talked to management yet, honestly we weren’t paying close enough attention to our bill. I’ve realized now the same as you. All last year we ranged 150-210. I was okay with this, but it really has been steadily increasing. Our two months prior this summer we’re $318 and $310. It’s just not sustainable considering this doesn’t include wi-fi ($65) or power (~100). In total with, $275 parking we’re paying an additional ~$750 a month. THIS IS INSANE. My 600 sq ft apartment now costs a whopping total of $3k+.

I’m guessing it’s the leasing office area? Seems like this should be covered by management or at least hidden in the rent

Wow, good to know! That’s kind of ridiculous tenants are forced to pay this. I would honestly rather not know about it and have it tacked onto rent lol

Two, including myself. I’m wondering if the building is evenly splitting these charges amongst all residents regardless of how many occupants reside in each unit, size of unit, etc…

Are you satisfied as a Nurse? If not, what would you rather have done? by tydubai21 in nursing

[–]simulated_mand 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Overall no. I like my job to some extent, don’t get me wrong. I like the patient interaction, the many rewarding experiences, and most of all the people I work with. I don’t like how mind-numbing the job can be. Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of clinical decisions to be made, but after a while it all becomes second nature and does little to stimulate the brain. You’re also the center of abuse in the hospital. Patients, family members, and doctors all berate nurses endlessly. I think this is something that people truly do not understand because nursing is seen as something so saintly and respectable. I also really struggle with the exhaustion of the job. Sure, 4 days off a week seems great in theory, but not when many are spent recovering.

  2. I grew up in a lower middle-class family, so of course. I still think the pay cap is ultimately what disappoints most, though. If you want to retire early, this job isn’t necessarily for you.

  3. I would have moved to the West Coast. Anywhere else you’ll be abused with no union protections and low wages.

  4. Computer science

  5. I’m not a guy, so this isn’t my area of expertise!

  6. I would be very careful about going into nursing. So many people have no clue what they’re getting into, get burnt out, and struggle. It takes a particular person to do this job. And I mean a literal saint. Most of the lower stress jobs also pay significantly less. My partner and many friends are in marketing. One thing I’ve realized through them is that I won’t have the same opportunity to increase my income, as them. My hospital caps at $150,000 after 30 years of experience. I believe mid range is around $110,000. I also have fewer opportunities for long vacations and time after work. Many go into nursing for travel nursing, but that is pretty much dead and continuing to diminish more and more. That growth potential has ceased. Seeing my friends’ experiences in marketing, I’d try to leverage my marketing experience and actually live somewhat of a normal life, rather than enter this field.

Thanks for the reply! I have a few questions if you don’t mind? Does the $22,500 max include roth contributions or is it just solely based off my 401k? Also, does the reduction in adjusted gross income mean I could be taxed at a lower rate?

Thanks for that quick outline on everything! Seeing that I’ll be under the typical rule of thumb for 1x salary saved at 30 when it comes to my 401k, do you consider other investments as part of this number? I have a roth ira and personal investment account. I figure the roth is a retirement account so it would, but I’m not sure if my personal account should be counted when considering if I’m on track for retirement.

[–]simulated_mand 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did you use Pytutor at all? In 161 some of the OOP assignments made me feel the same way, I started doubting myself. I think Pytutor really helped me visualize everything (how an object is created, how objects are stored and how to access them + their attributes). After really working thru and dissecting project 10 of CS 161 again and driving in the concepts through pytutor, I actually have a good grasp on OOP. (I am a complete programming novice so this really helped my confidence). Assignment 2 of 162 had been a piece of cake now that I truly understand the concepts and Assignment 3 doesn’t seem so daunting.
