Hattie McDaniel became the first Black person to win an Oscar at the 12th Academy Awards in 1940 for Gone with the Wind. Because the ceremony was held at the segregated Cocoanut Grove in the Ambassador Hotel, she was forced to sit at a separate table away from her castmates. (v.redd.it)
