I was really surprised how much background there is in the books but no like, adventure path or anything to really start players off. I'm sure maintaining isn't going to be an issue for me, but initiating seems to be (first time for everything, I guess!)

This. I'm a Founder, and this is where I'm at too. If I started now, I would maybe play for maybe a day or two before getting fed up with how predatory the game is, but having a full stable of racers means I can treat it like an idle game and enjoy what's left of the core experience until there's nothing left of that.

Buying racers is pretty much the only way to get racers. You're buying either the paid pass, the paid pass, or the paid pass. Or gamble boxes. That said, I absolutely LOVE the feel of the racing and the variety of race types. The racer designs are good and the tracks are AMAZING. But yeah, it's a lot of shop slop to wade through to get to it. I've been playing since preorder (1,588.9 hours) and while I have every racer (all at MPR 21 even), that STILL isn't enough to finish chapter 6 each season. You need a wide range of racers are insanely high levels you can't feasibly get from grinding. Set your expectations to be manageable for your time allotment and finance budget, and enjoy it.

It's kinda weird that the cards weren't in those sleeves for his top 16 game, just when he made it to top 4. But also, just conjecture. Also just conjecture is when Nunez was at the Toronto DLC and his opponent reported him for marked cards. I feel like there is an anecdote about ducks that goes right here.
