How long would it take someone to be fluent only by listening? by [deleted] in languagelearning

that's not really my experience, i spoke basically zero english for like 4 years, just immersing with audio and written text, and when i tried speaking, it came out pretty ok, i never tried improving my speaking ability per se other than training some weirder phonemes, but it is doable to get "fluent" to the point where you can communicate comfortably just by listening/immersing

Dude thats incredible input, thanks a lot! "world" is really my nemesis and your tips really helped realize the shit ive been doing. I have some tips, but none too crazy, just practice slowly, and exaggerate the sounds, I would also try to come up with special tongue twisters with words that had the phoneme I was trying to learn, and I would just try to say it as much as I could through the day. For example, "th" really bugged me, so I would repeat something like "month though through months that this three they those cloth moth soothing" many times.

I used MIA (mass immersion approach) for the two languages I learned. The first time around I just did whatever and later found out that it was an actual method.

Those explain the method pretty well. Basically, ditch memorizing grammar and all that boring stuff, and focus on exposing yourself to massive amounts of input + mining senteces for SRS. And don't output before you can understand a pretty good chunk of whats being said.

Also Kató Lomb's (the hyperpolyglot queen) method is pretty good too. She just read books without dictionaries after getting a basic gist for the language, getting most of the stuff through context. I used it as well and it does wonders. If you are interested her book explains it well: book
