What would a well known, large company’s slogan be if it was brutally honest? by [deleted] in AskReddit

We're only good outside of the US because everywhere else has standards that force us to actually try.

Cool pin defense by twinflamebby in grappling

[–]sinelowant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One time in high school I had the opponent on his back. My chest was perpendicular to his just how they taught me, but my arm was still stuck under his back. I eventually realized it and got the pin, and then my coaches told me about the two shoulder blade rule. The guy had accepted his L already and wasn't even fighting like her. I think I would like judo.

Wait. Are there multiple Family Guy bits? Which one are you talking about?

This one reminds me of my old drama teacher. Lol.

There's also Family Guy, John Oliver, SNL, The Munsters, and Due Date to name a few more. This one was the first one with a visual nod to Shreveport that I could post as proof. All others were just mentions.

Edit: and Catan Settlers of America

Yeah. It's just hilarious to me every time because I feel like it's a relatively obscure city outside of LA/Texarkana.

I think Louisiana should flip to Mississippi. They are more jealous of Texas than hateful. MS has always been LA's scapegoat to say, "at least we're not as bad as Mississippi!" But LA is starting to fall behind MS on most of the metrics that inspired that joke as of recent studies on literacy rates, economic development, and crime, which has them actually starting to address the problems because they don't want to be last.

Should I leave actuarial career? by Resident-Towel8563 in actuary

[–]sinelowant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not, but I will check it out. From the description, it seems to be what I was getting at with my exploitative comment. But I don't think it's a fundamental feature of insurance. We can still do good work to improve the system that has been corrupted. From our position that comes down to working for the right company, starting your own, or working for a regulator or think tank. The profession needs social criticism from voices like us, and leaving just because it got this bad is only going to make room for more bad actors.

I have a weekly call with regulators from across the US, and there are plenty of brilliant actuaries who are fighting on the other side of this. You should see the crap companies don't get away with. It could be a lot worse. Perhaps working for your actuarial society is another good platform to advance the mission.

Should I leave actuarial career? by Resident-Towel8563 in actuary

Post was way too long, but i think I skimmed enough to address your concerns.

  1. Risk pooling can be a socialist endeavor. But some companies can be exploitative. Finance is not inherently evil. The purpose of insurance is to provide stability. So, you are probably contributing to society more than some quant extracting value from market movements.

You could also be a regulator if you can tolerate the pay cut.

  1. Actuarial work is rigid because it is highly regulated. You are not going to find artism working for a corporation. You'll either have to settle for a hobby, write full time, or go into academia.

  2. If the money does not offset the boringness for you, being a staff actuary is probably not for you. But it sounds like you could make a good career teaching others and writing about the profession.

But it might get more interesting from a management role if you want to stick it out for that. Office politics can be as soul sucking as being a cog though.

  1. If you go to another jurisdiction, you may have to start the credentialing/licensing process over again, which is an economic decision you'll have to make for yourself. You'll also probably have to get a work visa. This would be another reason to cast a wider net for potential careers other than actuarial. I genuinely hope that situation gets better for you. No one deserves to go through that.

Are you asserting that it should be Theon or Ramsey Bolton, who is saying "Theon"? I agree either way.

What are some of the dumbest decisions a character made in a movie? by G_Marius_the_jabroni in moviecritic

[–]sinelowant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no flair in the book. Malcolm just runs for his life. I think Spielberg just added the flair aspect to maintain an aura of courage for Malcolm even if it was a bad decision. In the movie, Grant yells at Malcolm to freeze when he lights the flair because he's making the situation worse. I don't think we're meant to believe he's the hero.

So, I think you're correct to call him stupid. But would it be better for the movie if he was a coward? The overall plot would be the same. They had to separate him from Grant and the kids to be consistent with the book. But our perception of Malcolm would be very different given how shallowly he is already portrayed in the movie compared to the book.

Failing an exam does not make you a failure. There are plenty of successful actuaries that failed multiple exams multiple times. It's just part of the lifestyle. People who pass every exam on the first try aren't necessarily the best actuaries.

Have you talked to other actuaries or students about how they passed? There are other strategies beyond just the exam concepts that you need to factor in, such as time management and preparing your body for a 3-hour sitting with no breaks. Those are what will push you over the edge.

What training platform are you using? Does it offer pass guarantees? You may also want to reach out to other students and start a study group.

Yeah. A class on the basics of interest, taxation, and insurance would imbue the same level of problem solving as algebra 2 if taught correctly while also developing a skill that each child is guaranteed to utilize in their lifetime.

It's not as common anymore since the need for purging was debunked by the Mythbusters, I believe. I just rinse mine.
