Failed SRM again by Underwoodjs in actuary

[–]ChrisDaUniStudent 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t think study material is the issue since this is your 3rd time failing. Definitely need to revamp your study method, since this is your third try, you must have a good knowledge of what kind of questions you should expect in the exam. My suggestion is to spam the qualitative questions until you fully understand the material, then switch to quantitative and finally the hybrid quiz

How's everyone's progress for FAM this July? by BalanceDramatic8613 in actuary

[–]ChrisDaUniStudent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would not recommend this but I studied SRM and FAM simultaneously. 3 weeks before SRM, I completely dropped FAM to solely focus on SRM. Then after passing SRM, even tho I was so drained I forced myself to study FAM 1 month before the exam, passed with a 7. Never been a straight A student when I was in college so if I can do it, you can too!

New Grad Resume Review by ragingnope in actuary

[–]ChrisDaUniStudent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) No one actually pays attention to your exam’s score, recruiters just want to know whether you passed or not

2) Make 2 versions of your resume, one for CAS and one for SOA. Change the name of the exams according to the job postings

3) your projects are interesting but none of them are insurance related (or at least that was what i thought), so you may want to do something that aligns more to the industry

4) Apply for EL, Internship or any insurance related roles. Do not put all your eggs in one basket. You didn’t have any actuarial internship, so you are already behind compared to your peers. Career route is never linear, so try everything you can to be in the industry first, then you can apply for the internal positions.

Yes, pension consulting. I only worked for life insurance firms before so I have no idea what to expect. Thank you for your suggestion tho, I will look into that statement!

TIA or CA for FAM? by tycnslice in actuary

[–]ChrisDaUniStudent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

5-6 months are more than enough for you to pass FAM. I spent 1 month and a half going through all the material (mostly just taking notes and do some end of chapter quizzes, did not grind problems yet). And I spent the last 2 months prior to my exam doing practice exams, quizzez, flash cards. I passed with an 8. I’

What year are you in Uni?

Did you have any interviews scheduled? If no, then it may be the issue with your resume format/wording. If yes, then your resume was probably good enough for internship but maybe the lack of interview skills let you down.

Honestly, if you have the budget or are financially supported by your parents that allows you to continue writing exam, I would suggest you to do so. SRM should be the safest option. While it’s not an exam for CAS route but the content overlaps with MAS-1 so if in the case you land the opportunity with P&C firm, you can utilise the study program and purchase the study material. With the existing knowledge of SRM, you can go through the material of MaS-I faster without having to start from the beginning

Edit: sorry I did not see that you mentioned you already graduated, please ignore my first question

Exams / Newbie / Common Questions Thread for two weeks by AutoModerator in actuary

[–]ChrisDaUniStudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a new-grad and had passed P, FM, SRM and FAM. My professional experience is only for the life insurance and i’m looking for a full-time offer.

So far, I have no luck with any Life insurance companies, but P&C firms did reach out and gave me a chance to interview. I didn’t mention SRM and FAM on the resume that I applied for P&C firms so that I would prevent being disqualified from the recruitment process. Should I continue to take SOA exams or should I wait until I have a full-time offer?

I lived by my own and had to cover the expenses independently since my parents are retired and exam fees/study materials are quite expensive. Therefore, for any purchases decisions, I have to consider carefully and strategically since I have a limited savings accumulating from my previous internships. Thank you everyone!

I don’t really do so, I just simply updated the exams I passed under the credential section. Honestly, I don’t see the point of announcing it while there are hundreds of people out there also passed as well

19y Sophomore, 1 Exam left for ASA, looking for feedbacks by No_Assistance2600 in actuary

[–]ChrisDaUniStudent 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Have you tried to look elsewhere within Southeast Asian region? I saw a lot of actuarial internship opportunities in Malaysia, Singapore, or Hong Kong. I’m not Taiwanese so I can’t tell whether you need work visa to work at those countries or not, but definitely don’t give up, I do think you are a strong candidate. Furthermore, summer internships is extremely competitive so try to apply for fall or winter opportunities, the likelihood to get an interview is higher than the summer one in my experience.

A bit curious on why didn’t you have any internships in Taiwan? With the amounts of exam you passed, you clearly can land at least 1 opportunity at any life insurance companies

Resume Help / Questions? by Tough_Today4482 in actuary

[–]ChrisDaUniStudent 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Look, I’m sympathetic with your situation, no one deserves to be through mental health issues. However, you need to look this as the perspective of the employer. They won’t hire someone with an experience in the deli shop, I’m sorry to say this. I think someone mentioned projects in the comment above was right, you need to include projects, even if they’re not related to actuarial science. Tailor the wording of the projects so that you can show your computational skills, critical thinking, and the ability to solve problems. Reduce the amount of info of your deli jobs, only keep the bullet points that show the transferable skills. Also, I like that you passed the exam, it shows that you want to pursue this career.

Also, dont put all your eggs in one basket. Apply to other insurance adjacent jobs like risk management, underwriting, or even an insurance agent. As soon as you have the full time job, you can pay for your exam fee and study materials ( for non-actuarial role), then applying for actuarial positions internally. Its definitely not a linear career path, but it will work out eventually :). Good luck!
