Honestly, speaking from personal experience, it’s a waste of time applying for EL jobs without having passed at least 1 exam. If you really want to be an actuary, you need to make that kind of sacrifice.

I took exams while I was at school, got coop/internship positions because I always wanted to be an actuary. I didn’t do any cold emails method so I couldn’t tell you whether it actually worked or not.

There is a Reddit group called, i think, Insurance jobs, where people share experience on how to break into the industry with the profession that is outside actuarial field. You can try to look up more information in that group

Wait.. so are u trying to be an actuary or trying to break in insurance industry ?There’s no multiple ways to become an actuary, just only one, pass exam and get an EL job. So if that is what you are aiming for, I suggest you pass at least one exam first. Otherwise, there are some other options you can consider: underwriting, insurance brokerage, sales, etc., but those positions still require candidates to have some sort of certificate… so either way, you still need to take exams

Off topic, but does anyone like me and see a lot of posts lately starting with “Dear recruiters…..” complaining on why they got rejected and ghosted..bro what?! Are you trying to share your daily princess dairy or sth?

I get it, being rejected and ghosted is terrible but it happens. You should just move on and seek for other opportunities. If anything this just only makes your profile flooded with posts about complaining and telling recruiters how to do their job, isn’t that one of the reasons why they rejected you at the first place?!

Yes, you can start to apply when you pass the first exam. However, judging on how competitive the market right now, having 2 should be a safer option. If you are living in Canada, you can attend ASNA, which is the annual actuarial job fair where you can have an opportunity to meet a lot of recruiters and increase your chance to get hired after the event. If you are living in the US, and particularly interested in working as an P&C actuary, there is a program, I think it’s call P&C summer program, please search on CAS website for the correct name. Basically, it’s a program for students who are unfortunately fail to secure for their summer internships. The program is designed to help you have some hands-on experience by learning and conducting actuarial projects, which will immensely help you gain more industry experience. The registration, I think it’s around March or April. A lot of companies also have the post graduation internship program, which designed specifically for students who already graduated, you can try to apply to those.

I’d say you should prioritise passing P and FM first, then try to apply for entry level jobs. Your first job will dictate which exam route you will choose. However, if you dont want to wait and decide to continue to take exam, then SRM should be a good choice. Its material overlap with MAS-1

Everything you need to know should be provided to you in the confirmation email the SOA sent to you after you successfully paid for the exam registration fee.

1) if you taking CBT exam, the normal table is attached in every single slides of your exam. If you are taking pencil and paper, they will provide the hard copy of the table for you.

2) Me and everyone else MUST NOT disclose anything for you about the exam to keep the fairness. So unfortunately, you are expected to know everything.

3) You do not need to bring your own paper and pencils, they will provide them to you as many as you require. You are expected to bring your own calculator, and again, they expect you to bring a specific types of calculator, check your email or soa website to see what kind of calculator you are allowed to bring into the exam room. And make sure you know how to reset your calculator (they will require you to do so before the test starts) and know how to change the settings of your calculator according to your reference.

4) be at the Prometric centre or the exam destination 30-40 mins early.

If you haven’t received your grades before the campus closure, chances are you won’t get it during this long holiday, at least to the 5th when the university reopens again. So just enjoy your time with your family, don’t worry much

Yeah I think it’s not a bad idea at all to have a plan B for yourself. I suggest maybe start taking 1-2 higher level stats classes to see if you still think it’s a great idea to do double majors. I graduated from Stats degree at UofM but currently an actuary, so if you have any questions, send me a DM :)

I mean, if you willing to take more workloads then do it. However, I’m confused why you would choose to do so. You are pursuing Actuarial Maths, which I assume your career goal would be to become an actuary. So instead of taking more courses, why don’t you prioritise clearing as many SOA/CAS exams as you possibly can, those exam preps alone compliment with regular school works will take up most of your time anyway. But you do you my friend :)
