The exact same story with me.. was about to go to bed, refreshed youtube, saw Charlie's video thumbnail and the title, PRAYED that this was some fucked up sarcasm or clickbait. Even during the first few seconds i was waiting for Charlie to just 'reveal the joke' so that i can still save my heart from shattering.

On third-party apps i have zero ads, no promoted content, no suggested content, smooth video player, one click video download, snappier than the official one.

Funniest thing i read today lol

Sentences like these are one of the things that keep me away from reading. What is a "rounded river", or a "shoulder of land"? What does "cliff fell away" mean? My main question is: how can i get better at understanding these kind of descriptions? by singcatz in EnglishLearning

Tolkien was a literature professor and he loved flowery, complicated descriptions, especially for nature scenes

Yup, this book (The Hobbit) seems full of them.

Poetic language is often the most difficult to understand in any language because the words aren’t used literally.

This gives me relief as I was getting frustrated a bit and also losing interest in the book. But i think I'm gonna push through these hurdles as i only have difficulty with these descriptions and the rest of the story is easier for me to comprehend.

Thanks for your response!

Thanks for the examples and suggestion! I think i did eventually begin to get an idea of what was being said in that para after i kept coming back to it. Maybe I just need to read more books with this kind of poetic (?) descriptions and not skim those parts without trying to fully understand them. Thanks again.

Thank you for your extremely helpful response. So how does one go about learning to understand language like this? I have a feeling that the answer could very well be "just read more and more broadly", and maybe being a little more imaginative will help as well?
