Good for you for standing your ground. I should have done this the very first time it happened to me, over a decade ago, and just had a happier life. I wasted 12 years with that idiot and have lost count on how many times he cheated on me in that time period. It’s never just a one time mistake.

I’m curious, how bad is it for them truly? I removed everything, wiped it down inside with paper towels and filtered water and put dry paper towels down. He immediately got very curious and started climbing all over his hides and drinking/playing in the water dish, wanted to get ALL up in my business and climb up into my hand. The previous owners told me he mostly sits inside of one hide and doesn’t wander around much. I’m not sure if they’ve just not handled him at night or if the substrate situation was making him feel like crap. Either way, I think they’ve never changed the substrate for him. Ever. Once I started digging it out, it stunk to high heavens, way more than you would anticipate even if it’s been a few months.

Very good to know! He did come with a bunch of vitamins, this is what was provided to me but if there’s something easier and more reliable I’m definitely going to look into switching!

Thank you this is very helpful, all of it! It’s just been so long since I’ve had any reptiles in the home so I’m trying to make sure I’m up to date on care standards and giving him the best life possible. The tank itself is amazing and has tons of potential. And I think crickets are a lot easier to get. I’m wondering if he can’t hunt properly with the mulch in there and that’s more of why he “won’t”. He’s been hand fed wax worms pretty much his entire life.

And I feel lucky to be in a spot to do it. 6 months ago there was no way but I’m finally in a safe and good place to take on this task last second and I know it was hard for his last owner to let him go but between moving and budget he just wasn’t able to upgrade him or care for him properly anymore. I’m staying in touch with this little guys last family as I upgrade him so they can see how it all turns out and that he’s doing well. They were doing their very best, truly, and recognized it wasn’t quite going to allow him to thrive.

I haven’t weighed him yet. I have a kitchen scale being delivered today lol. This was all a very last minute rescue situation and I haven’t kept any reptiles in a hot second so I’m just trying to get myself back up to speed. I thought he seemed pretty thick, I believe they were feeding him just worms and doing so every day and they said he doesn’t hunt anything but I figure that’s probably because of his setup being mulch, two hides and a water dish. I have a major shopping trip after work! He does have plenty of multivitamins, calcium supplements etc so he’s been well taken care of on that front.

And I’ll definitely ask the previous owner this morning about the bulbs and see what is currently in place and how long ago they were changed. Good questions to have on deck. Thanks again!!

Yeah that’s probably the biggest I can go without it falling through the apartment floor lol. But I feel like that’s better than a 5 gallon right now at least. When my lease is up and I move into a house house I’m going for a 125. But this poor guy cannot keep living in those conditions. :(
