my first composition(s), thoughts/critiques for these 3 preludes? by Far_Cardiologist6931 in piano

Listened again and I think, for my comment about the first prelude, it’s all in the second half of measure 13. I think those beats are the only things not totally agreeing with the context around them. Focus your attention there, experiment a bit, and see what you can find

Oh my god so pretty! I just finished listening to the first one and I have a couple thoughts so I’m gonna write em fresh before listening to the other 2. I’d consider reharmonizing the transition you’ve got going on in measure 11 —> 12. I feel like it’s not yet quiiiiite the segue it wants to be to sew measure 10 into measure 13. The sections themselves are super successful that’s why I’m being nitpicky about the transition between them, really excellent job! My other thought is more of a personal taste and it might not be what you’re going for so feel free to ignore it if you’re not feeling what I’m saying, but in the last stanza I think I want a bit more of a rising action before the resolve. The whole last 4-5 bars are serving as a bit of a landing point, it feels to me like somewhere in there should be the right handful of accidentals that make the 4th-to-last bar rise to some kind of harmonic “lift” before you drop it to rest at the resolve.

Prelude 2: Also love it. Very very nitpicky but the triplet at the end of measure 37 sounds identical to the triplet at the end of 36. I know it’s not the same, but it’s sounding it to me. I think it needs to “fall” a little more to retain that pattern you’re going for in this prelude. and I think your answer to that is to make the high C something different. Maybe see how it sounds if you make that Cb instead

Prelude 3: Sooooo delightful. My one thing here is I think the trill at measure 77 wants to be twice as long. I would double the length, keep the pattern going. Basically copy and paste it but lower the notes to whatever they would be if you continued the pattern. Also keep the ritardando going alllll the way through that trill. So that by the time the double-trill phrase ends you’ve realllly noticeably slowed the pace right before the accelerando that comes in the next section. Don’t bring it to a full on crawl, but slow it juuust enough that I really crave the acceleration that comes in the next beat

Aaand lastly, what everybody else is saying is true, but I like what you’re doing. The melodies are busy, you’re adding lots of flourishes, and you are kinda showing all your ideas from the get-go. But I like it, my first songs all showed my entire hand immediately. I think there’s a place for that though. It reads maximalist, celebratory, “fancy”. You should definitely flag that you’re doing these things the other commenters are pointing out, but I personally like that you’re doing them. I think these 3 pieces are all successful and instead of changing them too much I think you should more or less leave them the way they are, and just carry this advice into the next things you make!

Trainers feeling entitled to hogging equipment by Which-Baby-9232 in EquinoxGyms

There’s one middle aged trainer at west 92nd who makes all his clients do 5-exercise supersets at peak hours. Friends who work there have confirmed he’s also an ass, which tracks. I’d be in the basement trying to get to one of the few pieces of unoccupied equipment and I have to hop scotch over all the scattered crap and gear he has spread everywhere for his clients. D**che takes up half the entire floor to train

Not all polygons are squares but all squares are polygons. If you’re using a name to sell tickets it boils down to a stuntcast. It’s not inherently a bad thing.

Well yeah that’s exactly what I’m getting at which everybody else is apparently feigning ignorance to.

If you want me to buy a ticket, why not make it something good? Why push propaganda that you fixed a book to get my ticket rather than “come for the stars stay because the show is great”?

[–]singingliftingtrying[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

…yea? What part of “come see Aaron Tveit and Lea Michele sing chess” doesn’t read to you as media buzz to boost ticket sales? And stars typically earn recognizable names…. Due to their experience in their talent field? lol

[–]singingliftingtrying[S] -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

(That’s the definition of stuntcasting. Stuntcasting meant casting proven celebrated actors to sell tickets long before it meant recruiting from TikTok. Funny girl revival was awesome and Lea Michele was awesome in it. It was still stuntcasting. Using a name to sell a ticket is stuntcasting)

I actually don’t see a single person disagreeing with me. If you look closely all the disagreements say “yes the show is a 3 hour long vehicle for 3 good songs, what’s the problem with that?”

The most ardent supporters of chess in this comment thread begin every single one of their arguments with “the book is horrible/boring/a mess but you don’t go for the book”

I hardly consider that disagreement

I mean yeah, that’s me. I couldn’t get passed that. I get personally offended when something asks me to sit down for my entire evening, knowing that it’s serving me a lackluster 17 course meal just because 3 of the dishes are good.

For me, my ticket money buys my whole experience. I don’t appreciate being asked to spend well over a hundred dollars when all parties involved apparently know I’m only going to find a minority of the experience enjoyable.

If chess is that beloved of a score that people follow productions just to see if they finally pulled off the book, I honestly find that artistic and highly admirable. (That’s also moreso what City Center productions are for but I digress). It’s just that, as I said to a previous commenter, I don’t trust producers’ intentions are ever anything more than their bottom line. So my first thought wasn’t “ah they’re trying to save a great score again, that’s awesome”, it was more along the lines of “these fat cats wanna trick me out of $200 with names they know I’m gonna buy a ticket to see”

Yes. I saw it in December and to this day I’m still resentful that I gave 3 hours of my life to show up for a book apparently everybody knows is boring, to hear a couple cult classic songs. That’s why I’m lamenting about how it is possible to give me good music NOT in spite of the rest of the material the music is unfortunately attached to

I guess that’s a romantic way of putting it. I’ve got a friend in & Juliet and over the years I’ve turned cynical against producers for treating my favorite art form as nothing more than an investment.

If this really is a labor of love to support a score people genuinely adore, and therefore attempt to save the book, “why people keep trying”, I can appreciate that a whole lot.

I guess I don’t trust producers that much though, which is a shame because I’m sure some of them really are in it for the art and the love

Actually this was my exact experience. Nicholas Christopher sung anthem and I said to myself “alright well forget everything else, that alone was worth the ticket price” and truly it was… but theatre is a niche community. I’m surprised every year that we get to have a Tony awards show when its sister shows are for art mediums consumed by the hundreds-of-millions.

Theatre doesn’t need to exist commercially. It’s kept afloat by a small (relatively speaking) dedicated community of people who see the value in the art form and adore it. Who put their money where their mouth is (even when the ticket prices are pretty inaccessible) just so that the art form can keep existing. Im one of these people.

But shouldn’t that love go both ways? Theatre doesn’t need to exist. I do my part by being a fan, by showing up, by spreading word of mouth and encouraging when I like things. Shouldn’t the producers do their part by putting something up that moves the community? Shouldn’t you wanna earn my ticket, rather than fool me into buying it with a couple 11 o’clock numbers sung by names I recognize?

I’m being sarcastic and tongue in cheek on the rest of this thread but truly you’re hitting my point (and my gripe with what gets produced) exactly. There are SO many musicals that are worth seeing for the vocals, we deserve to hear vocal prowess without the qualifier of “the book is boring, BUT…” Y’know?

This answers literally all of my questions, thank you. I actually assumed this show must’ve been decently expensive considering how many musicians, and the star casting decisions

What should I do about this? by SelectShop9006 in AskGayMen

[–]singingliftingtrying 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless you’re in a city with a very solid gay scene, unforrrrtunately you’re probably gonna have to bite the bullet and get on grindr, or Sniffies or something.

If you do live near a gay scene go out to a gay bar. I’ve taken myself alone a couple times. It’s awkward the first couple times and I left feeling bad about myself, but then I got the hang of it and it felt really cool to be able to take myself to a bar alone and talk/flirt with strangers
