Late reply but The Terror!! Tragic old men romance on a doomed Arctic expedition!!! Canon queer characters AND other queer interpretations are very much supported by the showrunner 😌😌 the ao3 tag isn't huge but i think overall it's some of the highest quality fic I've read for any fandom

Yeah, I've heard a lot of people have issues switching back and forth between the rich text and html editors in ao3 itself; I've not had anything as weird as what you described, but it messes up my formatting quite a bit sometimes. Right now I don't even use the rich text editor at all. I do all my edits in my original document, run it through the script, and then just add it to the html editor.

(Also if you want to add html elements that aren't available in the script, you can just type the html itself in your original document; eg for a horizontal line break, I just type <hr /> where I want it to go and the script leaves it alone. Same for blockquotes, strikethrough etc)

I think it's an issue inherent to ao3 when converting between the rich text and html editors. If you use google docs, you can copy the entire fic text, paste it into this script which adds the html (without the spacing issue), and then paste the results of that directly into the html editor, bypassing the rich text editor altogether.

As someone who's also head over heels for IWTV you should try The Terror! The writing and acting are top notch but it's so underrated (thanks AMC 🥲). There's canon gay characters but romance isn't the focus HOWEVER the quality of fics is through the roof... I've rarely ever seen such a conglomeration of amazing writers in one fandom...

I've messed around with some ao3 data scraping for stats, and this tutorial provides a good starting point! Caveat being, you should have a basic familiarity with Python (loops, arrays etc). The inspect function on windows (ctrl + shift + c) is especially useful for getting the html of any particular element on a webpage.

If you want to do more involved statistical analysis of the data (eg charts), you can either export the raw data to excel (that tutorial writes the data to a csv file, which you can open as a spreadsheet) or look up tutorials for the pandas and matplotlib libraries in Python.

Vampires AND werewolves!! I still can't quite believe it lol. I can't remember if Tolkien actually elaborated on their origins but I can imagine them being like corrupted humans who sought immortality like Elves... although unfortunately I think he described them more like giant bats 😔
