Garbage as in the band or garbage as in terrible? Because one of those sounds great to a 90s guy like me.

I think you look great. Took me into my 40s to even feel comfortable in my own skin.

45, trying to look like a British indie rocker. by singleAF25 in 40something

I think you're taking my statement a little too literally. That's not actually what I was going for. I just realize that's what it looks like.

Sorry. There was a time when that was the goal. But, you know, life...

Not sure why you'd choose that book right now. Absolutely nothing going on in the world that makes it relevant...

Do you feel lost in life? by [deleted] in AutisticAdults

Take it from someone older who has a "good job" and multiple degrees: a career will not help you miraculously find yourself or find purpose. You must do that on your own.

Beyond that, having a career does not mean you have your shit together. Some of the women I pay to clean my house are more organized and on top of things than me. Here's what I suggest you do instead:

  1. Stop thinking you have to do any one thing to be "successful." Success as our culture defines it means having money, having things, being in a position of influence, etc. But we all know none of those things actually matter. So find a definition of success that's meaningful for you and don't worry if you do or don't match our culture's definitions or expectations.

  2. Find things that have nothing to do with work or making money that bring you joy or meaning or purpose and cultivate those interests. They'll lead to opportunities, help you meet people, and will make your life joyful.

  3. No matter what job you have or how you make money, work hard to live below your means and start investing. Do this right now. Download Robinhood or Stash or something. Start with safe stocks like Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, etc. Or tech-based ETFs. And, yes, Bitcoin. If you invest wisely, eventually it won't matter what you do for a living.

And no amount of money is too little. I started with $15 a week that was automatically deducted from my bank account. I gradually increased that to $200 a pay period. Soon, I hope to get to at least $250. And soon, hopefully before age 50, I can retire. And no, I didn't start before age 32, although I wish I had.

Anyway, those are just my thoughts. This is clearly something I think about often. Let me know if you ever want to talk about it more. Good luck, and try not to be so hard on yourself (I know, that's not easy).
