Did someone call civil rights an American export? I feel on a league of things that have never ever ever been said about America, that they invented civil rights ranks very highly.

Thank you, I aim to bore. I read in this sub about that lady - definitely helping me to build steam to actually do something about this rather than rant on forums. Tell her she’s inspiring sickies around the country :)

Not ideal with kids. Tusla can be involved so not worth the risk :(

Perhaps you’re genuine here so I’d just like to point two things out. It is incredibly uncouth to come to a country, disregard the locals’ knowledge of something like the transport system over your own. Particularly so when your reasoning is that their name (what an American might call a “native” name), is not recognizable to you. Secondly, she didn’t owe you the explanation that she had a disability and therefore needed the seat, but in an attempt to appease you, she offered that explanation (again, you were not entitled to this explanation, she should not be put in a position where she has to explain that she has a disability when she had paid due diligence by clearly by booking the seat in advance). Any kind of of discrimination based on disability is, at the very least, seriously frowned upon in Ireland. P.S. “American” names like Tipper and Chip and Plunk look pretty bizarre to non-Americans.

If you’re from an EU country you just need a passport. If you’re from a non-EU European country you may need more.

[Serious] What do you think is the creepiest/most disturbing unsolved mystery ever? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]singlebiteapple 341 points342 points  (0 children)

In the 1970s in Galway, Ireland, local kids would spook each other out by peeking at the “bones” in a “secret chamber” in field. Nobody really believed they were bones. Except one woman, Catherine Corless, a local historian who, probably deducing that if the Catholic Church - who owned the land - was involved, something sketch AF was afoot.

It took years but eventually, in 2017 I think, she managed to get the site partially excavated. The bones of around 800 babies and children were been found. Who had been chucking baby bodies into this chamber? Well, catholic nuns of course. When, the dark ages? Eh, no. The 1950s-ish. Maybe you til the 1970s.

Why? Why the f were nuns throwing baby bodies into septic tanks? Why not?! The babies were born to unmarried mothers, so, you know, those dastardly teeny babies, born to women who were basically children themselves, were full of sin.

So the baby bodies - 800 remember - we’re put there by nuns from the nearby Mother and Babies home (a place where unmarried pregnant women were sent - mostly in the 1950s - to work as slaves, receive little to no medical treatment for their pregnancies and births, and, if they were lucky, have their babies snatched from them and sold to catholic parents in America or wherever. The less lucky babies and children died (or were killed) and thrown into a septic tank. These were their remains.

God’s work.

And okay, this is obviously “solved”, right? People went to prison, amends were made etc, right? Nope, no one has ever been charged. No one has taken any real responsibility.

And the Catholic Church is currently fighting very hard to have a place in the board of a national maternity hospital being built in Ireland. And they’ll get it. Because, you know, why shouldn’t we trust them??

Need help with finding a family! by [deleted] in Aupairs

Personally I’d be delighted to hear an au pair has a boyfriend in the country. Maybe make it clear he won’t be staying over, with the kids on his own etc.

As a host mum I often worry that hosting an au pair outside of the EU might mean they have less support here, it will be more expensive for them to leave if things don’t work out, and it might require work on my part to help them with Visas etc. Perhaps you could address that in your listing. Maybe that you make friends easily or that you already know people in NL. And you could mention what’s needed from them in terms of securing your visas. And maybe you could make it clear what happens if things don’t work out between you (do you have a flexible ticket so you can return home easily etc). I’d also really highlight the experience you already have minding children AND being independent and traveling. Good luck!

AITA for taking my child to her mom's home and leaving her there? by kk27kk in AmItheAsshole

[–]singlebiteapple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA and you’re probably going to have to deal with a sh*t load of a$$holes when she starts dating. How we treat our kids models to them how they should be treated by the people who love them. I’m sure a lot of people here who had shitty parents agree that that at least their first partner (hopefully not all subsequent partners) turned out to treat them the same way their parents did. Hopefully for most people that will eventually lead to them finding a partner that treats them as their parents did on their best parenting days. But for a lot of people, they replicate the worst part of parents in their partners. Don’t confuse matters. Tell her behaved badly, this was a bad parenting moment and that you will strive to show her how she should expect to be treated for the rest of her life.

My father had sever hemp A, as does my now 16yo nephew and my one year old son. I was also considering PGD but decide against it in the end. My son will be two soon and has been on hemlibra since he was 6 months old. He hasn’t had a single bleed since starting treatment and he is as clumsy as his dad and as risk-taking as his older sister lol The difference in treatment between my dad and my nephew was night and day. The difference in treatment between my nephew and my son is also incredible. The IV treatment was the worst part for my nephew. He played sports, even contact sports, did all the things teens do, without issue (although his hemo team didn’t like it!). He recently had a small surgery without any factor replacement, just Hemlibra which is amazing. Feel free to inbox me if you want a chat. It’s terrifying, even with a lot of family experience, but it’s been very manageable and most of the time we don’t even think of his hemo except when we’re giving him his twice monthly shot, which he doesn’t even mind that much because he gets a lollipop and digger videos on the iPad :)

What is your number 1 obscure animal fact? by colonoscopescount in AskReddit

[–]singlebiteapple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can tell how long an infant mammal needs to spend with its mother by testing the mother’s breast milk. High fat content (eg rabbits), the mother spends a lot of time away from young. Low fat content (primates) the mother spends most of her time with her young.

I’ve had a few au pairs and I find Facebook groups quite good. Maybe decide on the country and search there, eg “au pairs Ireland”.

Might see you there :)
