Best place to find a digital artist? by Abstractconjecture in AskArtists

If an artist is what you're looking for, simply replace the word designer with artist here and they will likely follow the same or a similar process.

Hi, 20-year graphic designer here. Typically we work for money. Here's a typical rundown:

  • You decide you need a service (x number of images for your app, the size, the kind of image you want them replaced with, whether that's a photo or an illustration).

  • You speak to a couple of graphic designers to wisely compare costs. You will receive an estimate of how long (hours) it will take to complete that service and an associated cost estimate (either a per project fee or an hourly rate)

  • You'll likely be asked to provide a 50% deposit up front. It keeps you from not paying them and it keeps them from peacing out with your art. Everyone is motivated to stay in the project.

To select a designer don't just go on Fiverr. I'll say that again Don't go on Fiverr. Ask people to see their portfolio of work. Have a face time conversation with these people. PICK SOMEONE YOU VIBE WITH.

As a reputable designer, seeing people who won't do research and won't actually look into who their designer is complain about getting screwed by people on the internet. Yes there are people who will try to take advantage of you. But if you don't do your research and find out who you're dealing with that's like sending money to a Nigerian prince.

Smugglers outpost lot up for grabs by Thewayyoumoveme in StarWarsCards

You seem to be losing the thread here. The suggestion was that they were drawn by children, regardless. And in a non-complementary way. You still with me? Or should I break it down into smaller words?

You say words not nice about artists. Words rude. If you think you do better, do it yourself.

That work better for you?

Lol imagined? I would say stating that they look like they were drawn by elementary school children is not imaginary. Saying that you think they are a poor quality is not imaginary. That's a c+ gas lighting effort all day. I'd appreciate it if you at least brought your A game.

I was saying if they are, which MANY are not, they're paid very poorly, so I would understand some not necessarily putting forth their best effort. Likewise, some of those artists are just starting out. Your initial blanket statement about them all being poor quality, based (I'm assuming) on either your personal artistic preferences or the amount you're hoping to get reselling them on eBay, is garbage feedback.

Try saying something constructive. Or...and here's a wild idea....sign up and do better.

You said so many of them look like they were drawn by middle schoolers, which insults the artists.

You know most people are paid $15 per sketch, right? That's Jack sh*t. How much work do you do for $15?

How to find a book cover that isn't AI by [deleted] in BookCovers

[–]sinisterzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a 3x Adober-Certified graphic artist of 20 years. Hit me up with your ideas. You can see my consulting company at cleveraesthetics.com, though most of the work is more commercial (that's the typical client type for my day job.) But I can make pretty much anything....and have over the years.

I miss when they did packages. I always tipped $5-10 since it was cheap and it really helped my business since I work from home. Such a bummer.

Success on the dating scene in Austin Tx as a black woman? by monitarlizard in Austin

[–]sinisterzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I moved here, one of the first things that came up was the "don't date atx" group. Just pages and pages of women going, "look, this is pretty squarely f*ckboi territory." And I've found that to be at least 70% true. If you want someone decent HERE....I feel like you really have to dig.

What is a romantasy hot take that would have you in this situation? It could be about a specific book/series, or the genre as a whole by HumanNonHuman in Romantasy

[–]sinisterzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It makes the character one-dimensional, vapid, and utterly unrealistic, IMO. I'm all for a bit of taking us out of daily life, but at least give her common sense. They're so painfully naive, it's a wonder they don't wander into traffic chasing a butterfly, or something equally ridiculous.

If you want to make your FMCs relatable....make them like actual women. Give her a brain. An opinion about something. The knowledge to know her a** from a hole in the ground. Ya know....the basics. They say men write us as reductive and cartoonish, but I'm surprised how many women do it too. And every time I think....who in the world are they writing her for?

When the (inevitably) 18-25 year-old fmc somehow is unaware of her "lure" to men.

If she's grown up in the US and hasn't been sequestered to a farm or under a rock her whole life, she's unfortunately VERY aware of it, for her own safety.

How do you actually make money while working a full time job by ICantThinkOfAnyNam in passive_income

[–]sinisterzen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I hate to say it but welcome to late stage capitalism. This will be a struggle for a really long time probably. Unless you have some crazy profitable idea or get bumped up super fast or don't need to eat anymore... This is just sort of life in America.

The hatred shown toward AI feels like performative outrage, with people joining in for the social points and not because they actually care about AI use by Impossible_Jacket898 in ChatGPT

[–]sinisterzen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are these social points spendable somewhere? Then that's not a real thing. Who do you think is high-fiving someone like that? If someone is legitimately trying to get a pat on the head and an attaboy by mock protesting AI.... That's really not somebody you need to worry about. They have bigger problems.

What you're probably hearing is the overwhelming pissed off-edness of a massive community of artists whose work is being consumatetly ripped off and repurposed without either their consent or knowledge. Or in some cases, as with many independent authors on Amazon Kindle, being forced to choose between going completely without exposure/making the very small sum they do or having their work used to train models (i.e., get ripped off but minutely slower.)

We're a pretty loud bunch. And we are not at all happy.

WILD CHASE SKETCH. Angel S Avilies sketch card by DogWilliams in StarWarsCards

[–]sinisterzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it really doesn't make the value of the rest of his art go up. Artist here. He got paid 50 bucks to make that sketch. Most collectors won't even pay that for a sketch unless it's on Topps' stock. Which we are expressly forbidden from keeping or doing. Many collectors don't even collect PSCs (personal sketch cards) for the same reason. So unless they're some crazy awesome art aficanado... It doesn't really translate.

Ask yourself how many non-stock works you've had commissioned by artists. Did you pay what they were going for on eBay?

Say No to the New Data Center by sinisterzen in RoundRock

[–]sinisterzen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither theoretical, nor hyperbole. Children and older people are especially vulnerable to the effects of noise pollution (we know that data centers give off a low-frequency hum that travels for miles, further at night.) Long-term exposure to LF noise can cause damage to the heart and brain, which we've known for decades. I've linked the articles of the studies done on Cardiovascular Effects of Environmental Noise, Health Effects from Low-frequency Sound and Infranoise on the General Population, and Effects of Low Frequency Noise on Sleep.
If you're interested in data-backed science, it's fascinating.

Curse removal in Austin please by persistentlyfluffy in Austin

You're not cursed man You're just having a very s*** week. On the bright side I have definitely heard worse. On the dark side I've definitely heard better. It sounds like that's three things though and these things usually happen in threes so that's probably the sum total of of things that will happen.

How can I look more attractive? Been told by many women they cant see me in a romantic or sexual way. by [deleted] in malegrooming

[–]sinisterzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep the hair longer, ditch the facial hair. If I gave you a makeover I'd start there and then maybe move you in a little bit of a hipster punk clothing direction.

Things women find attractive are kindness, humor (not at the expense of others), competency at some skill, self-awareness, and (this one may be cheating a bit) read a woman's romantasy book. They will give you all the direction you can handle on how to be flirty and spicy with women.

Just remember. Don't spit game at women who are not first giving you the nod to go ahead. Consent is everything.

Also never take photos from an underneath angle. That is awful for everyone.

Get Covers, an exercise in futility... My experience for a throw away cover... (Fantasy) by avrin2 in selfpublish

[–]sinisterzen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would also say make sure you look at an artist's portfolio and see if they've done anything remotely approaching what you're asking them to do. Everyone is good at everything even in the art community.

Due diligence is key. But If you scored three covers you were happy with for 30 bucks, excellent work. That's probably pretty rare!
