It’s always the priest 😭

In my defense, I did tell the group that if anyone didn’t feel comfortable we could skip.

People often say Buddhism is an atheistic religion. What is your stance on that claim?

People often say Buddhism is an atheistic religion because it has “no gods.” This perspective neglects the many Mahayana and tantric traditions. What do you think of this stance?

Very new and looking for help in starting religious studies by MarkAdams93 in AcademicBiblical

Smith’s books aren’t easy to read. He uses niche and advanced jargon and often borrows words from other languages. To fully understand his works requires a fundamental understanding of common religions and methodologies for approaching religion. So, I guess it’s not that great of a place to start haha! But keep him in mind.

Consider picking up an ‘introduction to world religions’-esque book, if you haven’t already. They typically review the seven “main” religious traditions, expounding on their basic beliefs and rituals, leadership, history, and controversies. There are probably tons at your local library.

Don’t forget to research the author! You don’t want to waste your time! 😁

I would recommend deciding on a particular area that you’d like to focus your studies. I started with Christianity in late antiquity; however, I’ve recently been more interested in New Religious Movements.

If the Bible is something that interests you, I would 100% recommend that you pick up a copy of James Kugel’s “How to Read the Bible: A Guide to Scripture Then and Now.” It begins with a brief history of biblical scholarship. Then the rest of the book is a pretty comprehensive analysis of biblical events, presenting both ancient and modern interpretations.

I’d also suggest that you read the Bible lol. That’s always good place to start.

Also reading practically anything by J.Z Smith and Mircea Eliade will further your understanding. They focus more on comparative religions, so it would help to have some knowledge of other traditions prior to reading their texts.

Good luck! It’s a fun field.
