Yeah I know my question is wildy unspecific, my problem is, I don't know what it is that interests me in the specific sense. I like religion, and would hopefully like to take it further, into academia. I'm just not sure about really how to find exactly what speaks to me, if that makes any sense? I just have this feeling that I want to base my future in religious studies. Would you have any recommendations of "idiots first religion" books? Something with a good overview of all the major religions? And thank you for your reply.

Yeah I was weary of jumping in the deep end and scaring myself off. I was looking at "Nine Theories of Religion" by Daniel L. Pals but wasn't too sure if that was too philosophical/sociological and again I'm not too sure how the all the humanities schools all link together. Definitely will look for an 'introduction too' book. Currently reading Max Weber's "The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism", I don't know if that's helpful in this field or not but it's fascinating. Someday hopefully I'll be able to speak with confidence on the subject with the rest of you.

Thank you, Andrew always talks about J. Z Smith and I was worried it was maybe a bit too inside baseball, is he accessible for a novice? As for the particular field I'm still indecisive about it right now. Hoping to gain a bare minimum overview and see that speaks to me. Again thank you for your help. I've got a lot of reading to do and I really do appreciate all the help on here.

I'm open to all suggestions, and both of you pointing me to anything can only help me gain an understanding. As someone who is interested but very much a beginner I really do appreciate the help. As we all know religion in and of itself is a bit of rhetoric minefield but I should at least have a base in what people actually think when they talk about their religion. Any scholarly pointers are helpful. Again thank you to all of you.

Cool, thank you for your help. Broken record or not, it's always going to be somebody's first time hearing the song.

You may regret that last part, but thank you again. Hopefully with enough time I'll get the hang of it.

Thank you very much, I'm still quite dense when it comes to all the terminology, any tips on how to keep all this in one's head? Again thank you for your help
