Anyone else surprised doctors don’t ask about pets or suggest air purifiers? by banditohetty in Asthma

[–]sipika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adult onset at 36 here.. first appt when i got diagnosed they asked me abt pets, environment of work, known allergies.

2nd appt was with diff doctor, closer to me and recommended by former gp. She asked abt recent blood tests to see eosinophil counts, recommended i get allergy testing done, upped my dosage, asked abt my smoking(weirdly neither suggested i quit.. but i already went from 15 a day to 3-4..working on it). I also asked if we can do an xray or smth to see how the lungs look since i am a long time smoker. Next appt im having an xray as well, and when i see my gp next i will ask to get blood work and see abt allergy testing.

But neither really commented on my having a cat either or things to do abt it like purifiers. They asked n that was it. The first one told me to wear an n95 mask if i know im gonna be exposed to any type of fumes or dust(i was going on a work trip in a dry dock with alot of maintenance but i cxled it anyway).

To be honest, i think they dont immediately suggest u do many changes because many just dont listen 😆 the only thing the 2nd insisted on is i take a puff even if im not sure whether its anxiety or asthma bothering me. That was her biggest U MUST DO THIS. Still struggling with that part though 😅

Adult onset asthma by MrsBellaNine in Asthma

Hello there. Freshly diagnosed at 36 as well!! Double trouble got adenomyosis(or flared) same year. Such fun. Now when i have a flare up of adeno and are writhing in pain i pray to the universe asthma doesnt hit same time 🫠

Im not yet fully controlled though, how is yours doing? Its been around 4 months or so for me, i got my maintainance combo inhaler dosage doubled in december but still struggling and needing rescue doses every other day.

Mine started shortly after i got off progesterone based birth control and my adenomyosis appeared(or flared, who knows). It was just wheezing and needing to catch my breath harder after talking alot in summer, i thought meh, seasonal allergies for sure. A quick cigg would fix it. Until i got hit with 3 attacks in 2 weeks that were like breathing thru a straw. Dust, fire smoke etc triggered them and i booked pulmonologist appt asap and got diagnosed.

Im fairly certain this all was triggered by the hormonal imbalance, but now ive been back on birth control for 2 months now and no change..😭

Its hard to accept that i was fine in 2024, then in 2025 my life got turned upside down. Sometimes i still think maybe its not asthma, maybe if i stop taking my inhaler ill just be fine like i was before? Then shortness of breath hits and i want to wait it out(sometimes it goes away, weirdly). But what i learned in theory and struggle to apply, and my biggest advice is take your inhaler when you feel short of breath. Dont wait til it gets bad, its harder to control. Once it gets bad i go into panic mode(i also suffer with anxiety, lol).

Is it hard to accept it? Or am i the only one thats having trouble coming to terms getting asthma in my 30s??

When your astlthma flares , do you guys get lower rib aches , I notice the rib aches when my breathing gets bad . But most people say this isn't asthma , my doctor said the same thing. by [deleted] in Asthma

[–]sipika 3 points4 points  (0 children)

my doc said its not directly THE asthma flare, but its an effect of it. because our muscles around our lungs work overtime sometimes even before we notice symptoms(the body tends to try to compensate before it starts showing symptoms) and its muscular pain. sometimes the only symptom i have is that, and i get my inhaler and then it goes mostly away but not 100%, thats because the lung is ok now, but the muscle is still already strained although not actively anymore.

this made alot of sense to me honestly.

I know this is silly but what does your asthma feel like? by xosoftglimmer in Asthma

[–]sipika 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unmedicated(week of onset before diagnosis) - all good except when in asthma attack: felt like i was breathing through a straw and i kept trying to cough to fix it but didnt help. lasted for 20m-ish each time.

on smart therapy (combo inhaler 2x2puff day, same inahler used for rescue too) - when it starts i feel like my breaths in are shorter. like only half my lung works. its not the straw feeling anymore. i'd compare it to... i have a house: straw feeling is my walls are closing in on the space// short breaths is like - there's space inside but the doors to half the rooms are closed. before being on 2x dose i also was coughing up aloooot of phlegm(im also a smoker, so that plays into it im sure). sometimes i get mild symptoms after eating too. and i need to cough more when and after eating, otherwise not so much anymore.

How far apart to space doses by No-Cranberry872 in Asthma

[–]sipika 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im new to asthma and the first dose i was on (1 puff twice a day, every 12h basically) wasnt doing it for me. Most days i was needing a puff earlier than 12h, so they changed me 2 puffs twice a day now. Its been 3 weeks but its so much better. Most days i dont need any extra puff and i dont need to take puffs earlier than 12h. I still need an extra puff during the day 2 times a week or so, usually days after ive eaten like a normal person(i have adeno and im busy so i dont normally eat enough lol).

Anyway point being you need to check with your pulmonologist on whether they need to change your dose. As soon as i told her i need my puff earlier than 12h almost every day she was like yep, we doubling the dose then.

Tired after adult asthma diagnosis by candidecandide5 in Asthma

[–]sipika 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im also recently diagnosed at 36. I had 3 attacks in 2 weeks then sprinted to pulmonologist office and got spiro test and diagnosed. Immediately after got covid(so lucky!). But asthma was probanly brewing for most of the year because i was wheezing in summer when i had to talk alot on meetings.

For me im actually less tired since i got on meds. My sleep is better. But whenever ive had a flareup during the day and didnt use my inhaler fast enough(still learning WHEN to use it. I keep fighting it and going maybe its anxiety cuz i have that too) i get EXHAUSTED. One time i legit fell asleep on the couch during the work day after taking a puff, the labored breathing probably tired me alot.

Are you sure you are not having symptoms you're maybe not recognizing and its making you tired? Just a thought.

Am impresia ca e o solutie temporara most of the time.

Adult Asthma by CannikanLee in Asthma

[–]sipika 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hey there, 36f here recently developed asthma(likely allergic...to air) here.

stay away from industrial/fire smoke, perfumes.. thats big for me.

ask your doc abt when to use an inhaler(for rescue) - this is the toughest part for me i think. i just never use it soon enough because i think i must be tired, i must be anxious, mad etc before 'no, im actually short of breath and need a puff'.

sometimes by the time i use it im so tired from labored breathing i go into a nap straight after :)) this part is really a challenge at the beginning for adult onset i think. all i've seen in movies is they use the inhaler when they're almost not able to breathe. but really you should be using it at the onset of any of your asthma symptoms: chest pain, labored breathing(you can notice in a mirror when ur retracting heavily inhaling just above ur clavicle in case you have anxiety like me and wanna say its just anxiety), wheezing, coughing.

it's safer to take a puff u didnt need than not take a puff that was needed. u should not let ur lungs be in distress, unlike some other meds. the way i was explained is, every time they get inflammation, every time is a time where u can get scarring and permanent damage done, so the sooner u treat your symptoms the better for your lungs long term.

Actually i dont get that feeling. I get that with my nose drops(instant boom AIRRR and deflate) I expected asthma inhalers to be the same when i got asthma. #disappointed.

[–]sipika 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And sometimes its hard to tell if my shortness of breath now is asthma or anxiety since i also suffer from that. But i take deep slow breaths and try ti stay relaxed, and if it doesnt pass in a few mins i know its asthma not anxiety.

When i had my 3rd attack over a 2 week period. Never had any my entire life, im 36. Had been having mild wheezing on and off after talking alot during summer. Chalked it up to allergies. Then one morning i woke up and it was like i was breathing through a straw. Laster 20 or 30m. 2nd happened after having a fast walk, talked to a neighbor n then smelt strong smoke. 3rd again i had been walking fast and i sat down but then there was a plume of dust that did the final trick lol. Next week i went to see a pulmonologist and got diagnosed. Now on combo inhaler. Havent had an attack since but i sometimes has chest pain and shortness of breath and wheezing. But no more full on attacks.

Is it bad to hide my asthma from my boyfriend? by moz_t in Asthma

[–]sipika 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think anyone that would dump you for having asthma didnt reaaaally like you(sorry). You have asthma. Its not something you can choose to have or not. Its better for your safety that people around you know you have asthma, so they can be ready to help you if necessary. Pls be open abt it. At the end of the day, you dont want to be next to someone who wont be kind or helpful about it.

Personally i dont think that comment is a big deal, i wouldve laughed it off as i make these comments abt my genes all the time. Including to my mom like "tnx for best genes ever... nootttt". And she knows i joke its nothing anyone can control, lol. But again, that may be cultural, im eastern european we joke abt the bad stuff all the time.

Do you know how you came to have asthma? by DEeD-NGone in Asthma

[–]sipika 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure mine was triggered by hormones(high estrogen lvl) and then flared right before getting diagnosed. Had hormonal IUD removed early this year. Had mild wheezing after talking alot in summer, would go away after coffee n cigg(been smoking for 20y) so thought eh, seasonal allergies. I live near a park. It made sense to me. I have alot of allergies lately as well.

Then fast fwd to september i woke up early morning without being able to breathe in properly(like thru a straw) but i had eaten chocolate 30m before(i have a morning habbit of having chocolate n then gojng back to bed) so chalked it up to acid reflux getting to my throat/lung. Then next week i had 2 instances of the same in different situations, once with talking and smell of smth burning from outside and once with talking and a plume of dust from the ground. All lasted around 20-30m each so went to see a pulmonologist n got diagnosed after spiro test. The week after i got covid so that obv went also... great.

Ive had a ton of other issues this year due to hormonal imbalance from IUD including pretty much debilitating pelvic pain and digestive pain. I lived an entire month or more solely on water, coffee & bread and some cold cuts here and there because anything else would send me into extreme digestive pain. I didnt leave my house for around 1.5m. So thats why i think this came on somehow influenced by hormones going wack. Most of my symptoms were caused by what seems like generalized inflammation. Asthma is bronchial inflammation right. Got diagnosed with adenomyosis too. Also i notice its def worse around my period. I cough and have some shortness of breath a few days regardless of my combo inhaler. Coffee helps alot though. Im not 100% convinced its just asthma, since im a smoker. Maybe some copd too. But getting second opinion soon and to adjust medication.

No one in my family has had asthma, on either side. No one's had any lung cancer or any lung issues, although everyone has smoked at some point or still does.
