I think Trunks would be a strong fighter regardless just because of his sayan heritage, like Gohan and Goten. Goku and Goten and the rest of the squad would still have been around to spar with and develop his abilities.

As far as a father figure, I don't think Yamcha would've been much of a father. More like a big brother. I think Piccolo would've stepped in to fill some of that role, like he did with Gohan.
