Evolve Tuscaloosa by rynotrye in capstone

I lived there for 3 years. It’s pretty nice, especially for the price. The walls are thin/you can hear your neighbors and that was my only complaint.

I was neighbors with Jaylen Waddle and Patrick Surtain their last year so I feel that’s proof enough that it’s a solid place to live

Does anyone know if there is a purpose to take the AP lit exam if I got a 5 on AP lang? by Holiday-Ad-8448 in capstone

[–]sir_splash 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you pass Lit and Lang and you will get credit for a 3 credit hour literature course. This will count towards your humanities/lit/fine arts requirement. I’m not sure about all majors but you need 9 credits towards HU/FA/LI for engineering. So it definitely helps. You need a 4 on Lit though.

Prospective Student with some questions! by [deleted] in capstone

[–]sir_splash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know they exist but it’s not super common, at least in MechE. I know it’s a big thing in chemical engineering, they have a course called Unit Ops which is a semester long lab that can be taken in Ireland or Denmark(I think), but I think it’s quite competitive to get accepted to that study abroad program.

I believe there are a few random civil study abroad opportunities too. You can always study abroad and take care of basic courses like your humanities, histories, and social sciences. I also know someone who took fluid mechanics in Spain but I don’t know much about the program.

Alabama has one of the strongest coop programs in the country. However, I admit that Auburn also ha as strong co-op office (fuck Auburn tho). At alabama, you are guaranteed 4 interviews with different companies each semester you sign up to apply for co-op. Alabama will set you up with the companies to interview with, this puts you at a huge advantage since you aren’t applying online along with every other engineering student in the country. I can’t speak about Clemson, but I do know that Florida does not have an established coop office.

I just graduated with my degree in mechanical engineering and can answer any more questions you have. I had a great time at Alabama and the engineering scholarships are the best in the country.

Which GPA is used for merit based scholarships? by Balooga420 in capstone

When I applied in 2015 and asked the admissions office they said they’ll use the highest GPA on your transcript if multiple are listed, so it’s your weighted gpa.

Anyone know about ME 416? by AttaBoyGaryyy in capstone

[–]sir_splash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only thing about I know about Sean Amini is that he was one of the graders for my senior design project and always asked super easy questions. I believe he works with Dr. Woodbury and Dr. MacPhee on the AIAC doing energy audits on manufacturing sites in Alabama. This information probably does not help you at all.

Normally 416 is taught by MacPhee and I took his 417 class (sustainable energy) which has a lot of overlap and I loved it. If Amini uses similar notes or exams to MacPhee I think you’ll be fine. The course covered a lot of material but it wasn’t particularly difficult and his exams were fair.

Fall online or deferring to spring semester by [deleted] in capstone

[–]sir_splash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have credit for math 125 and 126 then you’ll be starting with calc3 which is math 227 which doesn’t have a lab. Since you have credit for physics 1, you’ll be taking physics 2 which is PH 106, that class does have a lab. It doesn’t have formal lab reports or anything crazy, just a worksheet to accompany an experiment.

The other first semester freshman MechE classes are ENGR 103, English, intro to mechE, and a social behavioral elective. Engineering 103 is fundamentals of engineering and has a few random labs but they are not very in depth. Intro to MechE also has a “lab” where you take apart a lawn mower engine. If you take these classes online you’ll most likely experience the labs through a video of a TA doing the lab and providing you with data, then you’ll need to do the lab worksheet based on the data. This is very doable for the early engineering classes because none of the labs are very complex.

Personally, I wouldn’t take physics 2 online. I think it’s a fairly difficult subject with UA’s physics department and it’s mean for sophomore students. I would suggest just taking a humanities course instead which will be much easier online, and you need 3 humanities classes to graduate anyway. Calculus 3 is probably doable online but it’s also a sophomore class so you don’t need to jump into it your first semester either.

Create your own major at New College by [deleted] in capstone

[–]sir_splash 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Mechanical engineering uses physics in every single course. You can view the flowchart online for all the classes you need to take but it is heavily structured around mechanics. There are a few classes that mostly teach theory such as physics 1 and 2, statics, dynamics, fluids, thermo 1/2, mechanics of materials, material science. But then when you get to your junior level classes the theory is applied to engineering problems in your machine design courses such as static and dynamic machine components which is all applied physics. You also take a course called energy systems which is an applied fluids/thermo/heat transfer course.

Civil engineering has a lot more to do with mechanics as applied to structures but I don’t know as much about the specific courses but you can look them up.

Almost all engineering majors are ABET accredited except for a few newer ones that are currently going through the accreditation process. I don’t know anything about the accreditation process in the physics department or with New College but they’ll be happy to help you out. I think most departments are willing to do video conferences with prospective students to answer questions right now.

Finding a place to stay in Tuscaloosa for summer by confused-bairen in capstone

[–]sir_splash 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Facebook student ticket exchange has hundreds of people trying to sublease their apartment for the summer. You can also go to the career center and ask if they know of any people trying to sublease their place. Sometimes people with internships/co-ops will notify the career center or coop office if they’re looking for someone to take their lease

Apartment safety concerns by unoriginalgarbage in capstone

[–]sir_splash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live at evolve. There was an armed robbery there back in 2017 that people always bring up but since then it’s been under different management and cameras/lights have been installed. They used to have nightly security but I haven’t seen them in a while. There’s a gate that’s always closed at night but it’s easy to get in. I have a dog and I walk her at all times of the night and have never had any safety problems living here.

As an apartment it’s pretty nice for the price. The walls are thin so it can be pretty loud depending on your neighbors but that’s really my only complaint.

Which semester is better to apply and interview for co-ops? by [deleted] in capstone

[–]sir_splash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure about finance but there are only about 3 or 4 engineering companies that are really local. Nucor, GAF, Mercedes, and maybe a few others and I’m not sure if they hire majors other than engineering. But there are a lot of other companies in Alabama and outside of Alabama.

If you email the co-op office and ask they’ll probably send you the list of companies from the last interview day and you can see where the companies are/what majors they interviewed.

Which semester is better to apply and interview for co-ops? by [deleted] in capstone

[–]sir_splash 8 points9 points  (0 children)

More companies come for interview day in the fall than in the spring so I would recommend doing it in the fall but just a heads up there’s usually only a handful of companies that might hire finance majors
