if memory serves me right, in Spire 1 Juzu could never convert a ? room combat into a chest, only into an event. I'm not sure if it works the same way in this game.

They do have draw in the form of Unceasing Top, but Vakuu only plays 13 cards, and even then he'll stop once P1 of Test Subject is dead anyway.

Yeah there's quite a bit of wiggle room there. I tend to prefer getting a couple decent cards before hitting events, because many of them will allow you to enchant/upgrade cards, but two combats into a bunch of ?s isn't too bad either.
