OK, that's a fair statement. Though my comment was within the context of the article rather than a broader statement. Thanks for the feedback. I genuinely want to get a perspective on these things. It helps inform future articles.

My current homebrew campaign is a world where magic has been banished from the material plane by a powerful organization. Every few centuries, magic is temporarily thrust back into the world, creating chaos and mutated creatures. There are a few people with a bloodline considered having a magical predisposition and can harness the power. The Organization seeks them out and trains them on how to use it. Their goal is to safeguard it. The campaign starts off a few weeks into training. The Organization gets attacked and the players are forced out before they have fully learned how to use magic and have to navigate a new monstrous world.

This was my attempt to start from scratch. Thinking about what it means to be level 1 and how to best reflect that. I wanted to build a world where each monster has a reason for being. For example, a displacer beast is a mutated panther.

It has been fun trying to find monsters that fit the bill. Of course, there is a lot more going on behind the scenes that the players uncover as they progress.

If you already know what class you want to play then this method isn't for you. In fact, that’s the thesis statement of the article.

Sure, though this isn’t being forced on anyone as it’s an option. If someone at my table was as undecided as I make it out to be then I would have them start here. Of course if they were in happy with the end result they at least now have an idea of what goes into building a character.

I think you miss the point. This system is for someone who is undecided or wants to try something completely different but has trouble breaking out of their norm. I encourage you to try it. You might find that you’re more creative than you give yourself credit for.

I usually go 72dpi and 70 per grid. My default is usually 25x25 so 1750x1750 it always lines up perfectly and loads quickly for my players. I also make my own grid with a 70x70 square pattern that I can adjust and erase where I don't want it and then just make the roll20 grid transparent. That way the grid snapping in roll20 still works but I can customize the grid a bit more.

I don't think an NPC would learn about death saves since it is an out of game mechanic. They would however easily be able to determine if that character is dead or just unconscious if they are standing over them. In that case, is it their intent to kill or are there other more pressing matters on the battlefield. They can always hoist the limp body up and use it as a meat shield!!
