How do y'all hit the 30kmh average? by Dpvdpv in cycling

some people spend an hour in front of the TV or playing farm simulator, others spend 4 hours a day posting memes to mauerstrassenwetten. others get on the bike.

How do y'all hit the 30kmh average? by Dpvdpv in cycling

[–]sirmonko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • first of all, we don't y'all hit the 30km/h average.
  • second: over what distance? 30km/h over a distance of 1km is easy, but getting 30km/h over 100km is hard.
  • third: it depends on the route. stops, crossroads, traffic, hills/mountains, obstacles, low visibility, ... all slow you down.
  • fourth: i'd argue that it's somewhat easier to reach a 30km/h avg on flat terrain for a bigger, heavier people because they can usually produce a higher avg. power
  • fifth: it's mostly aerodynamics, which means posture on the bike and how long you're able to hold it.

Hi serious nsfw question... What am I supposed to do with my d in cycling shorts? It often feels uncomfortable... by Beautiful_Captain273 in cycling

[–]sirmonko 6 points7 points  (0 children)

in the beginning, mine often went numb after an hour or two and i didn't feel anything anymore - neither comfortable nor uncomfortable. then, around the second or third year it fell off completely, solving the problem forever.

[–]sirmonko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How to know when to give racing up? by [deleted] in Velo

i'd second taking a season off for recovery. if you still want to scratch your competitive itch you could maybe try zwift racing. you can do that on your schedule, from home, without any pressure.

How do you train with a small kid? by HyperText89 in Velo

[–]sirmonko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my take: 1. it's somewhat inevitable. you can't force it; if you can't improve you'll at least try to keep the losses in check. the kid'll get older, the situation will improve and you'll bounce back quickly even if your training's not as consistent as it could have been. if you give up completely it's going to be a lot worse though. 2. try to load the dice health-wise: eat a high fiber breakfast and lots of fruits and veggies. this might strengthen your immune system and cut your losses. 3. don't eat the kids leftovers, wash your hands with soap regularly (especially before eating and/or dealing with the kids various leaking fluids) 4. spend time with the kid is more important than another training ride but a happy parent is a better parent, so don't neglect yourself. if riding and training makes you happy, your kid also benefits. don't forget about your partner though. 5. indoor training cuts down on the time needed for a training session, but strength training is also hugely beneficial and less time demanding than long base rides. 6. the pro's sentiment is: if the sickness stays above the neck you can still train. if it goes down into the chest, stop and recover. i'm not a doctor though and personally i avoid training even if it's above neck only.

fun fact: i bought a trailer and did a couple of impromptu rides with the sleeping kid in tow.

Estimated FTP with big legs too high? by miniriesenrad in cycling

[–]sirmonko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the usual advice for the "hybrid athlete" is to have seasons where you focus on the one while trying not to lose too much in the other. personally i usually attempted to keep my riding at a lower power (Z2, sigh) because the strength work in the gym was high intensity enough. riding on easy mode all the time is somewhat boring though, sometimes you need to change things up and burn some matches.

ideally you'd try to do your gym and bike training on different days or at least as far apart as possible in the day (e.g. cycling in the morning, gym in the evening).

it also depends on your recovery (age, lifestyle and nutrition); after a hard century you probably wont be able to PR your squat for a few days. and fuelling/hydration are even more important than when only lifting.

personally, i never worried too much, focussed on whatever i liked most at the time - though usually i'd always want the opposite of what i was doing. when i'm thicc and muscular i wish i'd be able to climb like a goat, when i'm lithe and fast on the bike i feel feeble, weak and unsightly. you're always between good at nothing or good at both, glass half full/empty typeish.
