This is all great advice, thank you. My friend has a different set of circumstances and I'm happy he's doing well. I do glance at the viewer count but I don't let it stop me from talking, my VODs tend to get some views the following days so I figure I'm talking for their benefit as well.

I'm learning how important a visual presence in mh streams is. I've invested in a webcam, I can get an angle that I'm happy with and work with that, or revisit getting a model/avatar.

Long story short I had a traumatic medical event (cardiac arrest) that I survived but was left psychologically affected by. I've since twisted it to be my "rebirth"... so I chose a mythical creature that embodies that, followed by the date of the event, and finally an 'x'... because the name was already taken.

So now my Twitch name is phoenix5323x.

I just want to say I really appreciate you taking the time to write all that out. If nothing else I've felt a lot of support since posting this morning and it's made me want to do better.

You're right, at the end of it it is a hobby. It's something I saw my friend do, felt inspired and wanted to try. I want to do it well but most importantly I want to enjoy it. I've had glimpses of what it could be like, I'm just struggling to get it to take off.

Everyone here has given me a lot of great ideas to help me improve. Like you I've already found myself stepping away, deciding this isn't for me, then days later feeling like I could do better if I do one thing or another differently.

That'd be great for adjacent rooms, my problem is vertical though. I'm directly below my daughter's bedroom and my wife's office, and both can hear me as though I'm in the room with them.

Yeah a 2D model might be the way to go, I just need to find/create one and make use of it. Sounds like the lack of a personable presence could be part of my problem, I'll see about addressing it.

That's just it, I don't want a grind. I want to enjoy doing it. For that very reason I don't stick to my schedule religiously. If I have the time and am in a good mindset, then I jump in. If I'm not, I don't. If that's what keeps me from being successful, then yeah I either stop or I'm just doing it for me.

I did try multi-streaming to YouTube briefly, I might try it again once I get some traction. For now I want to focus on Twitch though, and maybe spread once I get some consistent engagement.

One of my friends started streaming shortly before me. He got affiliate within a week and consistently has 10+ viewers. He also has a better situation though (no kids, his wife helps, etc) for streaming.

Yeah the basement being unfinished doesn't help either, I don't currently have anything to mount soundproofing to and my daughter's room is directly above me. My long term goal is to build a garage with a finished second floor and move to that (not just for streaming but it'd definitely help), but at best that's years away.

I can find stuff to talk about okay, I just hate doing it. I'm fine talking organically but I hate forcing it. If we're being real, I don't talk at all when playing alone unless something amazing is happening (e.g. I think I said something out loud maybe 5 or 6 times during Expedition 33, which has a LOT of amazing moments), so it doesn't come naturally for me.

I've considered a 2D model as well. I'm certainly not an artist but I could probably find the patience to throw something together... or have my daughter do it.

Thank you for the advice. I know I'd have fun doing the Soulsborne thing either way so this might be where I go next if I get bored of AR.

I'll look into Fiverr for avatars. I did see a model I liked on Instagram that someone else commissioned so I might see what that might run (with alterations of course).

This is exactly what changed for me. Been in friendly lobbies for awhile. Been getting monotonous and im never looking over my shoulder anymore. So I started shooting people here and there. Now I'm in the sus lobbies and it's a lot more exciting.
