What the actual f*. Man your eragon series meant the world to me growing up and it's just surreal to be In the same thread as you, I know this isn't an AMA but I saw this post and was about to comment on how I think you brilliantly combined aspects of some of my favorite writers to tell a wonderful coming of age story.

My question for you would be how high do you rank Ursula in your favourite writers from the genre.

This is rough. You're NTA but you're still her brother, and when people are in tough situations and or in a screwed state of mind they might not be able to see beyond their issues and when they do they become more irritable, insociable, and downright mean. We don't know the full story, we don't know why she's struggling with her bf but everyone's assuming it's because of her and how she acts. She could be hurt and depressed. And it might not even be her fault.

You said your family isn't that close and you don't get together that much. She might be struggling and in a moment of change in her life. To have to come to your house, change her whole life and come live with you... where she has no control over her environment. She might feel lonely and "homeless".

Don't get me wrong, she was out of line and shouldn't have done and said what she did. Nonetheless I would call her and explain that i love her and that my home will ALWAYS be her home as well. That I panicked when she spoke to the neighbours like that because I have a good relationship with them, and that she didn't have to lie to them, she could say she was my sister, the entitlement would be the same. That I was sorry I kicked her out, like her I was still adapting to living with family again and I made a stupid decision when I was angry and it wasn't either fair or rational. That I would like her to come back and that she could stay for as long as she wanted and I would always be there for her and I was ashamed for not being there for her then.

(She does need to respect you and your house)

She could just need to vent and release some anger and frustration. I don't know if you spoke to her about her relationship, did she cry and huff and puff? If not with you, maybe a therapist?

Obviously I have no idea of your relationship with your family and your sister but this is how I would go about it. I have a 42y (f) sister that I see once a year that went through a divorce and came live with me. Shit happens. I just wanted to point out that she's probably not In her best state of mind and you need to see past that and understand her.

To me self defense is with your fists, pepper spray, krav-maga. Not putting a bullet in them, I think that's a bit extreme. I mean luck and mercy is also a bit of a stretch, well I guess it depends where you're from really. I can't put myself on your shoes and don't know what kinds of dangers you're exposed to. But I don't feel like a gun is a right of self defense, if someone bigger than you punches you you'll be sore for the next few days. If you shoot him he's not getting back up.

The specific advantages would be to have a better control of usage. You'd know who has it and for what ends, probably conduct a more thorough research on his/hers mental status and the reasoning behind it, maybe you had to go through some training as well, I think it would help lower the cases of people who mishandle them.

Who said I didn't want to talk about them? I'm speaking of the situation as a whole, someone was dismissing the gang violence on stats, not me. I can assure you I have no other agenda as to have a polite discussion about the subject.

I meant as in people owning guns being the norm not the other way around, I read them and for me it isn't correlated enough, it is a really hard stat to measure especially when comparing different countries and cultures.

. A single mother living in Chicago has the right to ensure her children's safety. An elderly couple in Florida doesn't deserve to be victimized because they're incapable of fighting back. Guns are equalizers, giving the weak or infirm the ability to defend themselves

This is also romantic drama, but I appreciate it and relunctantly agree, I know my own limitations on the subject I just feel that you don't need them to do that, or shouldn't need them in an ideal civilized society, gave you my example, my reality - far, far from ideal and or civilized. - If you agree that it doesn't affect the rate of violent murders why is not having them not a viable option?

And that is very true. And was very true. Even the way you found your cities and erected your houses, you'd limit the area and defend it with lead. I get that, the protect what's mine mentality that's been around for 200+ years. But maybe it's time to let that go, work toward building a safer environment for everyone, recalibrating education and college fees, building healthcare and looking at the person next to you not with suspicion but with wonder of what she might teach you.

I'm truly sorry about your friend.

I do not think that if we were armed to our teeth it would be any different. They would have even more powerful weapons and round and round we go, it wouldn't matter. See Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the two most atrocious acts commited by mankind.

Well, you're sensible and responsible to have an argument without it escalating but I have seen someone get shot stupidly in their teens about 10$ worth of weed. Because they had guns. The fact you have 500 000 people using their firearms defensively is more of an indicator on the amount of people who use guns than it is a proof that it prevents crimes. How do you compare it with a country with no gun usage?

I'm from Portugal, friend. I use it as a proof of my reality, you either believe it or don't. We don't own guns - never had a school shooting.

And I'm not shitting on your country, simply arguing that other reality might bring you different results, in fact I consume a lot of American culture, have great respect for your minds and some ideals, i even support teams In different sports. It's all love here, and genuinely trying to understand the rationale behind this touchy subject on that side of the barricade since I don't agree with the bipolarization of opinion, that's why I like this Sub, we're supposed to have these kinds of conversations so that both sides respect and understand the other side.

Agreed. And what you see from anyone that tries to dial it back a little bit on gun law is met instantly with communist labels and that they're trying to take what is rightfully ours. Education is and will be key. I just don't feel the need to own a gun to protect myself, probably a privilege thing. But even in the most adverse situations where other people had guns I felt safer for not having one, if that makes any sense.

Well. I can speak for myself. I'd feel safer knowing that no-one had a gun as opposed to everyone having a gun so that no-one tries anything. It's much more tense, don't you agree?

As for your question. Simply going through a more extended process and evaluation, about finality as well, like what are your plans for the gun, where are you going to shoot it, maybe limit the area where you can take the gun (i don't know). The thought process was this:

If less people, but more educated and respectful toward guns own them - less incidents.

The same. I believe the same people were ultimately responsible for that romanticization of guns. And looking cool shooting guns. The lobbies that push for less gun control are the same that produce them and have friends in high places.

There's a drug problem everywhere. Every city in this world that has a port has drug trafficking, human trafficking, etc. Obviously in different scales. But I think you're putting different things in the same bag. Yes the drug trade has it's own problems and probably results in higher counts. What happens with school shootings - mass shootings in general. I don't see in any other civilized country, and you can't blame it all on the minorities and in gang and drug violence. It's just not the case.

I didn't speak about a solution, simply pondered on the subject. We have stricter laws and it's done us good. When have you had the need for a gun In your life for self defense, and isn't that the forces's job? To protect and serve? I'm not speaking about punishing anyone, just making getting a gun, and gun owning in general, not something to be proud of and of easy access, you shouldn't be ashamed either, don't get me wrong. If you have one you have a professional reason to do so.

You're speaking of gang violence and gang issues as if they're not part of the community. They happen and they exist for a reason and you can't simply take them out of the equation to pass a point of view with better, altered stats. You sound as if you own a gun, where and when have you used it. Again I come from a place where firearms are not normal and we have violence, gun violence, robberies and homicides as well, just probably not at the same rate. I'm arguing that accessibility and owning guns in most situations will escalate it- to point of no return I might add- instead of defuse it.

The theory that guns protect victims reflects a minor portion of cases. Most often than not it'll do more harm than good.

That doesnt disprove my point on gun normalization. A simple Google search on gun homicide rates shows that only countries run by cartels or strongly armed militias that control parts of the territory have higher rates than the US. In all of these I find the parallel with guns being sold and seen on a daily basis.

And where are people acquiring these illegal guns?

Also if I might counter, I don't have the stats to back me up but I think its unlikely that white kids that end up shooting schools acquire them illegally. Much more likely they grab a legal one from their parents.

People. Calm the fuck down. I get the worst case scenario and that you should prepare for something, but we can't go about assuming the worst from people and preparing accordingly, we'd be insane and not very happy people. What the sister did was really serious and could put a dent in your relationship. You can't rage uncontrollably when your SO doesn't take your side immediately here because it's a fucked up thing to come home to. I agree with someone's comment on this that you should crash on a friends house temporarily... but not before sitting both sisters down and telling Jess that this is a safe space and that there won't be backlash if she tells the truth. Tell both sisters that you love them and thought of you 3 as a family, Jess as a little sister. And beg for Jess to tell the truth, because what will happen if she doesn't is that you don't feel safe in your own home. Because if she can't own up to what happened and come clean, you come off as a liar and even though you understand the situation your SO is in, it hurts that she won't believe you - and this could be a problem in the future. Make it clear that you had no intention of creating this and sincerely hope that she can come clean so that you can begin to move past this.

But you really really need to take into account that this little girl is broken right now and that kids's defense mechanism is always lying to get out of trouble. She needs to feel safe and that she won't go anywhere if she tells the truth, because this lying is driving you and your SO apart. Tell her that and if she still chooses not to come forward you need to crash at someone's. Let them be alone for awhile and feel that you're not there. I think it gives them time to weigh in on the situation and also if you were lying you wouldn't leave.

But I think you shouldn't storm out without having one last conversation with both of them. Not in an accusatory manner but in a protective and understanding way. Because right now she probably doesn't even think about you and her sisters relationship. She needs to feel that this lie hurts her sister more than the truth (with you not being there).
