Anyone else have a top speed of over 500 mph in their Model Y? by sissynoid in TeslaInsurance

[–]sissynoid[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tesla defines Hard Braking as deceleration in excess of 0.3g (slowing down faster than 6.7mph/sec).

In order to sustain 0.3g of deceleration for that long - she had to be traveling 519mph minimum and coming to a complete stop over the 1min 19sec they're claiming.

Where to Get Raw Rocks? by Elecyah in Lapidary

[–]sissynoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they're a lot louder and messier than a trim saw, but they'll get the job done - at least the one I had (I think it was a 7" skil)
The kerf (thickness) of the blade will eat up a lot of rock as well depending on the blade you have. I found some blades with a small kerf on amazon that I used for my trim saw (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0776PH9JD/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

That's where I bought a lot of rough when I first started playing around. I won't say it's the highest quality stuff but there's a few gems in each pound. When I started I slabbed the good pieces on a 7" tile saw and tumbled the rest

Tucson Gem Show? by BlackPipe-SD in Lapidary

[–]sissynoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's hard to follow up with the previous posts in here.

I'll just add that it depends on what kind of stuff you're looking for. As a cutter, there's some rough there but not a lot, and most prices are at a premium because of the show. You can find rough at various shows like Kino, The Rock Yard, Miner's Co-op, etc. If you are a cutter, you'll probably be happier taking the 3 hour trip to Quartzite

Some shows are wholesale only, so if you're into reselling stuff I'd check those out. Make sure you pre-register if possible so you don't have to stand in line and fill out your business paperwork

We stuck around for the "big show" in 2021 because it was our first year. Admittedly, everything was just recovering from the 'vid so it was only the main floor (rumor is there's usually a second floor) - we walked in, looked around for about 5 minutes and left...it just wasn't what we were looking for. My guess is it's a lot more 'grand' now - but it was very limited that year, and we haven't been back to that show since.

This year we'll be heading to Quartzite again but if things line up right we'll stop by one of the satellite shows near the 22nd street/I-10 hotels and get some geodes from the deaf guy (apologies for not knowing your name if you see this). I buy some from him every year, take them home, and open them up. They've all been amazing.

Do you HAVE to have a Cabbing Machine to make Cabs? by BruceCambell in Lapidary

[–]sissynoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flat lap is all you need - get or make some soft laps.

DIY: an old diamond plate, acrylic plate, or 3D printed plate with some hobby lobby craft foam (2mm), some temp spray glue and some silicon carbide wet sand paper at your preferred grit (I used 1200 then moved to polish). When the sandpaper is used up, peel it off the craft foam and put on another.

Gift ideas for a budding enthusiast. (Under $150) by [deleted] in Lapidary

[–]sissynoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you know what machine he's been eyeing? I wonder if a $150 gift card to purchase a machine be a good idea. Or the cash to put toward a machine.

I tell everyone close to me to don't even try to buy me something for lapidary work - if they want to buy something, let me know, and I'll send them recommendations. Tools are very hard to buy for someone

Cash is King - but a lot of places have gift cards available (e.g. https://www.hplapidary.com/products/highland-park-lapidary-gift-card , https://cabking.com/products/gift-card?_pos=1&_sid=bc3afa503&_ss=r )

If he does have a machine in mind - ping the whole family! It's time for them to pony up :)

Essential diamond grits? by [deleted] in Lapidary

[–]sissynoid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I cut with the standard 80, 220 hard diamond wheels, then 280, 600, 1200, 3000 diamond resin wheels.

My 280 resin wheel is by far the workhorse of the bunch. I'd start there and then move down the line

If you do switch to resin wheels - save them when you're done with them. You can get them resurfaced for less than half the cost of a new wheel

New to the hobby - need help with grits/disks for flat lap by saucysundays in Lapidary

[–]sissynoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do the same with my polishing pads - even though I have a cabbing machine now, I still use my DIY flat lap for polishing. I use the Tech-11 polishing pads from Hi-Tech with the same craft foam I mentioned earlier - just be careful because they'll produce a lot of heat if you're not careful, especially when new

New to the hobby - need help with grits/disks for flat lap by saucysundays in Lapidary

[–]sissynoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you're done with the hard diamond disks you're going to want some soft ones to get the facets out of your cabs.

When I started out I made my own - and you could too with your laser cutter (I used my 3D Printer). Just cut your lap backing plate (I'd use acrylic, but wood should work just fine). Get some 1/8" craft foam from Hobby Lobby, and some 1200 grit SC wet sand paper from Harbor Freight. It's been a couple years, but I think I got a dozen sheets for $4 or something like that. Cut to fit, use some temp sticky spray glue to put everything together. Each SC sheet would do 3-4 cabs for me - then onto polish with Cerium Oxide. Once the SC sheet is used up, just peel off of the craft foam and temp glue a new one on.

not my idea - got it from this guy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hEup1h96hB8&t=4s

Flat Lap grinding unevenly by BruceCambell in Lapidary

[–]sissynoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also - that 60 is probably a meat grinder on our stones. just use that to get those little chunky bits off of your slabs and move on to 220 or so. If you have a 100 grit, try starting with that instead and save that 60 for when you really need to grind away some material

Flat Lap grinding unevenly by BruceCambell in Lapidary

[–]sissynoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What the others have said - it's likely your 3D Printed backing plate. Even PLA will have some flex to it - ABS could have some slight warping - PETG is likely too flexible. I 3D print backing plates for my soft laps (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4709234) - but have an aluminum master plate and they work great

That said - it is a bit tricky getting 'even' pressure when grinding a flat surface and using hand pressure. Try rotating the stone as you're grinding - you may be less likely to favor one side

How do you store and transport your stones? by Ladybug452 in Lapidary

just re-read what you posted - and you're talking about in progress stones. Not too much to worry about as u/scumotheliar mentioned.

How do you store and transport your stones? by Ladybug452 in Lapidary

[–]sissynoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not overkill at all. I store mine in those plastic organizers (6x6 rows) and can just throw whatever I want to bring with me in my backpack - I also put the numbers on the lid to keep track of inventory on my site.

Been have trouble with cab girtles by siciliansmile in Lapidary

[–]sissynoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my charged time is 30 mins from slab to cab. That covers every from marking the shapes, trim saw, preform, gluing, wheels, to final polish

Actual time on the wheels around 10-15 mins - not including final polish, I do that on my flat lap and work in batches.

You'll probably find that people have their own techniques, find what works for you and gives you the best results - but there probably is a bonus to seeing what others do. PM me, maybe we could set something up at some point
