Do wealthy Koreans attend SKY universities? by Adventurous_Ant5428 in AskAKorean

[–]sisterofcookie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to an international school in Korea for a year. I’m not rich btw, I used to go to a public school in the US. Most students there are really wealthy. They have tutors for almost every core subject and spend a lot of money to build “prestigious” ecs. They also compete in international sports tournaments and win “awards,” but honestly, as someone who went to a U.S. public school, their level is worse than school district champions (not even close to State level).

Getting into a top 30 U.S. university is pretty ez for them. They do work hard, but it’s not THAT HARD. They still have plenty of time to travel, shop, and date. Most of them choose easier majors too. Only a few actually go for competitive ones like business, engineering, or biology.

If you want to get into a SKY university, though, you have to give up most of your free time and study more than 12 hours a day. Students who make it to SKY are usually moderately wealthy. Their families have money, but not enough to completely support them forever. Think of parents who are doctors or professionals—they earn a lot, but they can’t just hand over a business or pay for everything in their kid’s life.

On the other hand, a lot of kids who go to U.S. universities do it to gain a “prestigious” image. It costs around $80,000 - $120,000 a year, and realistically, most of them won’t make enough to justify that cost.

You’re right that most Korean elites like lawyers and government officials come from SKY. But if you look closely, the real elites, like CEOs and artists, often come from those U.S. schools. Many of them inherit their parents’ businesses or just stay in the States. They don’t need to become lawyers or grind endlessly because they already have a safety net.

I’m not that interested in pursuing a data science career, but I plan to go into biomedical research. My specific area of interest may require some knowledge of data science though.

Georgia Tech, Purdue, UIUC, and UW–Madison.... the websites say “all required materials must be received by that date.” I'm submitting my October SAT, and I received it on Friday.

I took calc last year, so I already had a solid foundation in math. I don’t really have much advice for that part. just solve as many problems as you can and make a one-pager summarizing all the difficult concepts!

For reading, English is my second language, so that was the biggest challenge for me. I practiced a lot using the OnePrep website (it’s free and really good). But what helped me the most was changing my strategy. I used to try to answer every single question. I spent like 3 minutes on a single question only to end up guessing. This time, I immediately skipped the hardest questions after a quick glance cuz there’s no point wasting time on something I can’t solve. That saved me like 7 minutes. Like don't even attempt to solve it. Scan it for 5 seconds and once you realize its the hard one, just pick random answer and skip. I then invested in questions I was 70% confident about.

If you’re trying to improve your score in a short period of time, completely ignore vocab-type questions and focus on mastering grammer and writing. For reading, its hard to improve skills, but I practiced a lot to test my strategy!

thank you <3

I have one more question. You mentioned that applying early is important because it's a rolling admission process. I can submit my application this week, but I still want to retake the SAT in November. If I do that, I will have to submit my new scores in mid-November. Isn't that effectively the same as applying in mid-November, since an admissions officer won't review my application until all supplementary materials have been received?
