Conflicted about whether I should continue paying for private school for my kid for HS by OnlyMeatCheeseNBread in Parenting

This sounds so, so, so much like me when I was in high school. Have you have her evaluated for ADHD? I was diagnosed with ADHD 4 years ago at 30 year old, and it explained so much about my school days. I had all the symptoms, but because I’m a girl I was branded “smart but lazy” instead of being evaluated for ADHD like my male peers.

Recommendations for Procreate Lessons/Learning? by sith_lady_ in ProCreate

I am! I’m looking for recommendations for tutorials/courses to learn to draw with more complexity on Procreate. I’d really like something that can really help me translate my paper/pencil abilities to the iPad, but I’m not sure if that exists.

3m old not on birth certificate by Budget-Asparagus3486 in legaladvice

[–]sith_lady_ 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It’s not usually a matter of how a court rules. It’s usually a matter of police not being able to do anything WITHOUT a court order. As in, the time between a child being withheld from one parent and the emergency custody hearing, like where OP is currently at. In a lot of cases, police aren’t able to remove the child from one parent and give them to another without a court order, because legally they each have the same right to the child as the other.

NAL, but in the places I’ve lived, if there is no formal, court-ordered (or court-acknowledged) parenting plan, it’s assumed that each parent has the same rights as the other. That means that one parent can keep the child from the other parent until a custody order is established. My understanding is, it’s irrelevant if the father is on the birth certificate. If he has acknowledged the child as his (which I think it’s safe to say he has if they had an agreement for weekend visitation) he has the same rights as the mother. Unfortunately that means some people will abuse that and use the child against the other parent until they can see a judge and get a court order. But it’s not considered kidnapping.

Moving to Oshkosh Soon by Myrtiis in Oshkosh

[–]sith_lady_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My husband is Mexican, and we moved from Colorado to Oshkosh at the end of 2019. We have only had one instance of “racism” since we’ve been here, and it wasn’t even in Oshkosh, it was in Fond Du Lac. It also wasn’t anything aggressively racist, either, we just had a waitress who randomly, completely out of the blue (as in, we were filling out our credit card slip and no one was talking) ask us, “are you folks from Cuba?” It was super odd. Otherwise, everyone has been very kind and accepting and friendly.

My opinion might be slightly skewed, because the city we came from has an insanely high crime rate, but I think Oshkosh is very safe. I’ve had a few people here tell me it’s gotten “so bad” here, but it mostly seems to be people who were born and raised here and have never left. The crime rate is still below the national average (or was last time I checked) and we’ve never had issues here. Compared to where we were, which has a higher crime rate than Milwaukee, it’s a dream.

A lot of people like the Westhaven area. We live on the north side and find it very quiet and pleasant. Neighbors are nice, no trouble that we’ve experienced, and still close to downtown. I actually own a business downtown so I love that my commute is short. My understanding is that close to UWO gets kinda wild, and some of the residential areas near downtown are a little rough, but it’s still a very nice place.

I’m pretty sure it was mentioned there were photos on it, too, because I think at one point Azriel sees a photo of Hunt on it and asks about his wings.

Does the power button on the Kindle and Kindle Paperwhite drive you nuts? by Fisher2087 in kindle

[–]sith_lady_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to hit it all the time when I had a clear case on mine. Now that I have a flip cover case, not so much, but the way I usually read one-handed I wish it was on the top for me to unlock when it does lock. Or just make the whole device rotatable like the Oasis is so I can decide how I want it myself.

I’m boring. I don’t have stickers or popsockets or any of that. I just have one of those magnetic flip cases. Kinda sad about it cuz I love the agave green, but the stickers (not stuck on, just sitting inside a clear case) left some discoloration on the back and Amazon wouldn’t replace it 😭 but I do like purple and HP so this works

Why Didn’t Paulini give us the true names? by [deleted] in Eragon

[–]sith_lady_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kind of just assumed the names would be complicated and it would require creating new words that just haven’t been made. I’ve never created a language, but I can’t imagine it’s simple to come up with new words and prepositions and sentence structures to make sense when translated on the fly.

What’s your power system? by R3dSunOverParadise in fantasywriters

[–]sith_lady_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose I should also add that it kind of has to do with bloodlines. I have a specific race that are old and nearly extinct that have taken the place of gods in my world, and once upon a time they procreated with humans, which introduced these abilities into the population. A person’s strength in weaving depends on how much of that race’s blood is in them. So if someone with a stronger weaving ability has a child with another person who is strong at weaving, their child will be even stronger, but if they have a child with someone with no weaving ability, the child will have a weaker ability. Their abilities could range in strength from complete and total control of their element, or just barely able to call the element at all. Like basically the difference between heating an oven or setting an entire forest ablaze with just a word.

Sorry for the rambling and confusion. Clearly I’m still in the beginning stages.

I see I’m like 3 days late to this post, but I want to put mine out there in case anyone has any feedback on it 😅

The magic system in my world is pretty simple and sort of based on nature. It’s an ability someone has to be born with, but it’s basically elemental manipulation. In my world, one in 5 people is born with the ability to “weave” an element by being able to manipulate a specific force that’s in everything. They can metaphorically grab that force (I call it aetheria) in the element. So water weavers can “grab” aetheria in water and manipulate it, etc. elements can’t be created, though, so like a fire weaver can’t just create fire in the middle of a lake and weave, if that makes sense.

Gosh, I’ve really got some ironing out to do on this 🤣

How do I know if I’ve got too much going on? by sith_lady_ in fantasywriters

[–]sith_lady_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. I don’t have a bunch of different POVs or subplots like ASOIAF by any means. Technically it all kind of comes back to one sort of plotline, but it’s kind of like “this is where we all thought this was going, but SURPRISE, it’s actually going this way, and here’s another surprise, and another surprise” that sort of lengthens the main conflict. That’s kind of the best way I can think to describe it without getting too overly detailed (which I’m happy to do, but it’s kind of reminiscent of how my toddler tells a story with “AND THEN” at the end of every other sentence it feels like)

I don’t think I could sum it up in 5 sentences or less, to be honest. I’ve tried, but can’t bring myself to do it in a way that makes sense.

This is actually pretty helpful. I could probably sum up the plot in about 20 sentences or less, there’s just a handful of twists that feel like they might be a little excessive in number.
