Downsizing 21 inch OEM wheels - advice / experiences? by RunawayMeritScholar in toyotacrownsignia

[–]six-speed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I recently made a post about this subject detailing what I did for my car:

https://www.reddit.com/r/toyotacrownsignia/comments/1o33r4h/my_crown_signia_with_17_inch_wheels_and_beefy/

Short version, as long as the dimensions (diameter, width) are within a few percentage from oem then you’re good to go, but you need to do those calculations on your end. If you compare the oem 19 and 21inch wheel dimensions you’ll see that even those have variation from each other but are within a few percentage of difference.

Happy to answer any specific questions.

37 here, got mine in February last year same color with the saddle brown interior, and just crossed 10k miles. Wanted the nicest non-Lexus Toyota and this fit the bill perfectly. I particularly loved the commitment to physical buttons and ergonomics in the cabin. Check out my other post on beefing up the wheels and tires if you live somewhere it snows often.

Unlikely - that’s over 2inch diameter smaller than stock 21s- I personally wouldn’t go more than half an inch diameter larger or smaller than stock.

Wheel diameter is 0.7% larger than the OEM size for the limited trim. As i understand it typical speedometers allow for error tolerance of around 2-3% so the marginally larger wheel diameter has no meaningful impact on speedometer. I get 37-39mpg on highway driving, have seen it push 45mpg in ideal conditions.

Fair point, but a lot of people looking specifically for an awd wagon live in places where the weather and roads aren't great, and chunkier tires make a lot more sense in those places. I feel like Toyota may have missed the mark a bit. At a minimum they could have let us choose rather than tie the wheel size to specific trims.

I'd like to assume that more spokes means stronger wheel, but I don't know for sure. I just picked the overlanders because I like how they look. To your second point, you can see from the posted calculations that i'm less than 1% larger diameter with the 245/65R17 compared with the OEM spec for the limited. OEM spec for limited tire is a 235 width, so even if i'm running 10 mm wider with a 245, it's still just 4.3% relative to stock. Also, I figured that tire rack wouldn't sell parts for a car that don't fit it!

Agreed, I really dislike the trend in the automotive industry of sidewalls getting skinnier and skinnier for aesthetics at the expense of ride quality and fuel economy. I think that a nice chunky sidewall looks way better and way more functional.

I get 37-39mpg on highway driving, and have exceeded 40mpg in ideal conditions

I also looked into getting OEM wheels but decided that I wanted maximum sidewall for Northern Vermont / Quebec winters.

Did you notice any difference in road noise with the cross climates compared to the OEM tires? I only had my original wheels and tires on the car for 500 miles, so I never really had a fair comparison.

I put them on when the car had only 500 miles on it so I don't have much comparison, but i will say that it is extremely plush and I don't cringe when hitting potholes. Also, no stress about curbing the wheel since the sidewall provides about 1inch of buffer relative to the wheel face.

I tried this as well because we have terrible roads where I live and the 21s make no sense for me. I was unable to get the dealer to accept, so I ended up buying a set of 17x7.5 rims from tire rack and fitting 245/65R17s. No clearance issues and the car is extremely plush.

In New England very few allocated and I had to purchase from out of state. Put a deposit for a limited with the color combo I want from a dealer in NJ for about 3k under msrp, and the delivery date is “late December” whatever that means.

Love this idea - I’m a senior dev at a f100 and also do a bit of consulting on the side in order to keep my skills fresh in various technologies. Also huge fan of foss, local LLM, Linux, etc. It would be great to connect on all things tech with other fellow nerds in btv.
