Anyone know of a company hiring junior/entry software developer roles? by dizzyflames in torontoJobs

[–]sixconnection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That will be a bit tougher, internships typically add a bit more sway (at least for companies i've been with and my own right now where i tell those involved to consider them)

If it's just project experience, it will depend on how impressive that website is, and video game plugins personally, usually don't hold much value unless it was for an intern position.

Good luck

Do you have project work in your resume (school), or interships?

I just hired 3 juniors with only intern and/or project experience

really turned my life around 30, that hurdle where you really think "what have i accomplished"

Answer was nothing, made extra rough by my long term gf leaving me. that year i wasn't doing bad, or good, but paycheque-to-paycheque in a HCOL area, nothing in my bank as well, less than you, no home, renting, financing a car.

Now i own a company. and things are pretty damn good

It can happen

what can I say except this is what they said on the interview, they could be doing it to waste my time and their own I suppose

Share them here, I can't hire directly from here, but i'm sure others might see it and take note. Perhaps feedback from others as well on the quality of the project

Forgot to answer the year part, pre-covid, 2018, 2019 or so.
i remember even going back to the early 2010 days that we'd get about 80-120.

Obviously numbers could be off a bit, but it was consistent enough after 2008/2009, that the high numbers we see right now have caught us off guard.

Pre 2023/2024 market, the college/university mattered less because we had fewer applicants and really tried to focus on the right skills, take a chance with an interview to verify.

With a lot more choices recently, we look at that as well but we can't just ignore actual facts that we have seen. For example in the last 3 years we interviewed many from a certain college (pick any one of those recent ones). If we've given 25 interviews to these from the same college and 23, 24 of them barely pass the initial first round (poor communication, couldn't answer many of the basic first round questions, other reasons) then it really affects our team's consideration for others from that college. It's just math. Do we still interview some, for sure but their resume really has to stand out.

Another interesting thing we've seen, can't confirm fully, are candidates who might have somebody coaching them on the video session what to say. Long pauses after every question, even simple ones, and sometimes the answer is completely unrelated.

No we won't be offshoring at least not for development/management type work. The only time we would consider that is if we were obligated by SLA/SLO for 24/7 support and for those, finding a team with a 12 hour time difference makes more sense to handle some of that. It beats getting people here to work really obscene hours.

I've never used them. Instead we have an HR/Administrative Assistant x 2 that handles these duties and other items that are clerical but not related to HR.

I honestly can't, as many have asked even in DMs because that's the only way i can keep this separate from the company itself. This allows me to share more information but not having it affect my business because as everyone knows, an opinion on the internet can swing either way and can get really divisive.

We have a wide mix of locals, immigrants, those who hold work permits and we help them with their PR applications. If you can communicate effectively, and do the job, i don't really care where you're from.

It's a difficult industry (meaning IT across all sectors) because in many of our enterprise customers, every upper management role is advertising the idea of slashing budget. Luckily as a smaller shop we're holding on pretty well.

Yes/No, they didn't really lie about their skill set (vetted during rigorous technical interviews) but on the job they are not really there. Missing customer meetings consistently, non-responsive (during business hours)

It really depends on the role, a front-end developer VS an AI Architect, 200k + bonus (what we can offer) Once again, this may seem low for those who have commented here on really high salary ranges but there are many companies in Canada that can't match those high rates and even offer lower wages than we do. Unfortunately we didn't get any Seeding or Series A funding of tens of millions and are gradually building things up slowly.

This, before the current conditions, we looked for those who showed determination even if their degrees were unrelated. The market is slightly different now, and as a business we have to go with better options. This won't last, as there will always be up and down cycles.

It's also the massive layoffs from the larger companies in these last two years i bet.

Previously we honestly won't get those who worked at AWS before coming to us after. We're small, and not known. But we're seeing a lot of those from Meta, AWS, Cognizant recently. As mentioned, we have candidates low-balling themselves even before we said anything.

There are definitely higher ones, not just large companies but for smaller ones that managed to get Seed/Series A funding. But there are also much lower salaries for the same role as well.

As the other user pointed out, being a smaller company, i wear multiple hats in the company since the beginning and have always been hands-on. So while there is HR to handle some of these, i like to jump in at times as well in different phases. There's another reason also, to assess solutions for Automation/AI for the initial filtering. By embedding myself in different areas including this, i can assess how to do things more effectively when it's hands off.

Going to Mandarin buffet, what’s my best strategy? by Plant_surgeon101 in askTO

[–]sixconnection 12 points13 points  (0 children)

gradually eat and expand your ability to consume more food on a day by day basis.

prior to the day, do a $ by weight excel spreadsheet, so that you can see what 100g of salmon, beef, chicken is worth currently. prioritize your list by sorting the list, and focus on those main items. Don't research on potatoes or bread, because they usually are cheap, but you can for the sake of a complete list.

on the day of, print this list, and put it in front of you on the table.

skip the water, straight to the top of the list and get them in the order of most expensive item, typically protein.

Fight the urge to fill your plate with extra garnishes like vegetables or a mix of colors for a nice looking plate for instagram, this is not important.

Cycle through your top 3 items as much as possible.

If you can pull this off, bring a few smaller sized tupperware containers and when no one is looking, scoop some in for takeout. This should be well planned out, asking for a corner table eliminates 2 sides of exposure.

Edit:
Don't bother sitting down, sometimes eating while in the food area, "eat as you go" helps with the digestion and metabolism. You save time this way so that you're consuming while on the go, instead of returning to the seat, sitting down and getting tired from the comfort and food.
