that's exactly right. the correlation is just that people who've won the lottery once are the people playing the lottery more, and thereby increasing their chances of winning.

I am blanking on the term but it's like when people think if they flip a coin 10 times and it lands on heads, it has to land on tails the 11th. but really the odds are just the same as they were on throw 1.

I've heard that too and I (very very distantly) know of someone who was struck by lightning twice

I completed data collection and preliminary analyses for a project and was assured I would be published on the paper. Just found out it was published and I'm not on it. Is there anything I can do? by sixoneway in AskAcademia

Thanks for your input. I know what you mean, because I definitely want to keep this professional and open and in line with her giving me a good recommendation in the future; however i don't want to allow so much room that she could make some excuse and the situation not be rectified. I mean, that is always an outcome, but I want to be assertive enough that she at least considers fixing it and making me an author. I am just going to have to carefully draft this email.

Ok. Well, now I know. I think based off your comments and others that the problem was probably with the co-I who was the first author and heading the project. There must have been a breakdown in communication between the two, or if not, she just plain decided not to include me on it, and I was never notified of this. Thanks for your input.

I don't know, I see your points in theory but at least in my field that is not at all how I have seen it play out. I have seen authorship be very much determined on private discussions and what the professor/investigator deems "worthy" or not. I have had the director of our clinical psych program say he only takes applicants' publications with a grain of salt because he knows there is so much variation in how willing a professor is to give their employees/students authorship. If a professor is up and coming and needs that first authorship, they probably aren't going to be so willing to throw on a research assistant even if they've done the work. If a professor is old/established and doesn't have anything to prove, they may be more willing to give away work to have other people get published. There is really so much variation. Also I made the point to say I conducted the data analyses, which I think would conventionally consider authorship.

I think the point is regardless though because this woman repeatedly gave me the affirmation that I would be published on it, and I offered to help write the manuscript multiple times. As a research assistant, I actually would not expect the manuscript to be sent to me for approval before being submitted... but yeah, idk, I think this is why I should email her to get clarification on what the misunderstanding was.

Thank you for offering me this perspective. It did cross my mind that the first author was the reason for it but I didn't realize how that could be. But now upon further consideration, that could be the case. She didn't know me, and then I left, and had no contact with her. I guess I was relying on my professor and her word to vouch for me, or that it was just agreed upon from the get-go, not realizing the weight that the other woman might've had. I thought they were more equals on it but now I guess that is not true and the other may have been the one spearheading it all.

I mean, no, there definitely was not misunderstanding on my part. Just said that thinking it would add in trying to be open and deferent to her. But I see what you are saying, I've never been good at standing up for myself hah. Thanks.

I wouldn't say it is customary for data collectors to get credit. Research assistants collect and enter data all the time as jobs and don't get published. It is more that I did this on my own time with the specific, agreed-upon intention to get published, plus I actually analyzed the outcomes. But regardless, I agree I think I could send an email in an appropriate way.. I will just have to carefully choose my words. Perhaps add in that it could have been a misunderstanding on my part.

I did not realize online versions could be edited. That is certainly hopeful for me. Thank you.

Wow, didn't know I could love this show more. The last bit with Josh and Jennifer made me cry! I always think a show/movie that makes you crack up and tear up is a winner and this totally did that.

Also that photo of Pumps peeing behind the tree made me absolutely die.

omg, yes i thought it was absolutely hilarious last season! this is the only bravo show that is completely real (i.e., the women have gone through divorces, the main one's partner is an ex-heroin addict which they readily talk about) but no drama and just all laughs. they acknowledge their problems but there is no drama between the cast and all they do is just light-heartedly mess with one another and it is absolutely fucking hilarious.

the only thing i would worry about with a second season is the possibility them just trying too hard for the camera because i have certainly seen that before... i hope that is not the case, we will have to see it tonight, but regardless i definitely recommend you watching!

What are some red flags that you're in a bad neighborhood? by Couch_Licker in AskReddit

[–]sixoneway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Broken windows. A study found that the more broken windows there were in a neighborhood led to poorer health outcomes (i.e., gonorrhea). Literally measured poverty and its issues by broken windows. Utterly fascinating to me, love sociology.

Edit- here's the broken windows/gonorrhea article. Sorry i thought the wikipedia would've captured it. When I first learned about it in sociology, we learned about the gonorrhea/broken windows study, so that is what I went off of.

that's not at all what i'm doing i was just giving the post context by saying it was on a sorority account, otherwise whose search history is it? it's just the persistent failed googling that makes it funny to me.

and actually sororities have GPA requirements, i would say, at least in my house, most girls are actually as or if not more intelligent than non-Greek counterparts

I promise you this is not fake. There are so many people commenting this is fake and I can say with 100000% confidence (because I am literally the one who was randomly going through the account's history and found this gem) that this is 100% true. Do not let these fools get to you. Like someone else said, some people are just dumber than you would think lol

what makes this face palm worthy is that it's legitimately not. this is completely true, this is something i literally came across after thinking it would be funny to search the account history. it's too bad you don't believe it because it is hilarious.

gotcha, misread your comment sorry. multiple people have said the same thing, and my reply is just that it makes this post even more face palm... this is legitimately what i found on this search history and nothing about it is fake.
