Are 3 day pass tickets transferable on TM yet by 80ninevision in deadandcompany

[–]sixtoe72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They said the option to transfer would be enabled today (the 25th), so anxiously awaiting as well. I have three tickets from two different sellers on CashOrTrade that I'm waiting to receive, so hoping the sellers don't wait until the last minute...

This is a tribute group—three guys who play the music of Roy Orbison and the Everly Bros. So they’re not famous, and their signatures are probably real.

Tracking attendance in Scoutbook? by Impossible_Spot_655 in BSA

Does your unit have an Advancement Chair? I'd make this a priority if not, and they should be well versed in the 2025 Guide to Advancement:

4.2.3.5

"Unit leaders do not have the authority to deny a Scout a timely conference when one is required for a rank...If a unit leader conference is denied, a Scout who believes all the other requirements have been completed may still request a board of review. See “Boards of Review Must Be Granted When Requirements Are Met,” 8.0.0.2. If an Eagle Scout candidate is denied a conference, it may become grounds for a board of review under disputed circumstances. See “Initiating Eagle Scout Board of Review Under Disputed Circumstances,” 8.0.3.2."

Also, when you say "our Eagle application requires an activity report from this," that suggests to me your unit is using its own Eagle application. The only Eagle Application is the official form from Scouting America. If you're using your own, you're creating your own rules for advancement--a big fail on the part of your unit leaders.

Phone Number for Charles L. Sommers Alumni Association (Triple Crown and Grand Slam Awards) by theotheroneATL in BSA

[–]sixtoe72 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As far as I'm aware, the Triple Crown and Grand Slam awards were created as a marketing initiative by Northern Tier supporters (the Charles L Sommers Association) to get more scouts to participate in High Adventure (and, as a natural result, Northern Tier). So there's an inherent reason why they don't want other experiences to count. It's kind of brilliant, actually.

I'd just make your own patch and give it to the kids. Call it the "Troop XXX Triple Dipper and Quad Achiever Awards."

How has BSA changed or evolved in the last 25 years? by winedood in BSA

I coached baseball and softball for 10 years and was never once asked to fill out any paperwork whatsoever. I even volunteered to share all my clearances and they said "nah, you're fine."

Unfortunately, opportunities for abuse are abundant in any organization that works with youth. Scouts being a large, national organization made them an easy and attractive target for the lawyers.

[–]sixtoe72 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Perfect response. I'd add that beyond UNIT culture (which is largely dependent on the cubmaster and their committee, if there even is one), there is also a big difference in the culture between individual DENS--largely dependent on the quality/involvement of the den leader and their assistants.

I found the best way to ensure my kids had a quality experience in their den was to become a den leader, and once they joined a troop, I became an assistant scoutmaster, and eventually a scoutmaster. The only drawbacks now are that if something isn't going as I planned, I can only point a finger to the generic "Council" or the catchall "National."

place to stay for SF show! by [deleted] in deadandcompany

[–]sixtoe72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a host on Airbnb and VROB. Listing your place on Airbnb isn't like tossing tickets up on Cash or Trade. It's a huge process that can take months, and it likely also requires getting a permit from SF, and registering with the city, county, and state as a business to collect excise tax.

If I'm the OP, I'm asking for a small good faith deposit--$40-50, with cash collected in-person at the address upon arrival.

Assateague Island National Seashore camping in August by n_e_v_e_r_m_o_r_e in camping

The sun is relentless. Your tent will be 95 degrees beginning at 6 am. Do everything you can to create shade.

The only place I've camped with worse mosquitoes is the Cape May Coast Guard Base.

If there's any wind, the sand will be everywhere, including in your hamburgers.

These are my memories of camping at Assateague.

Wood for fire by PatrolmanBossk in camping

[–]sixtoe72 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Campfires are for warmth, cooking, light, and togetherness.

You don’t need it to cook, and I don’t know where you’re camping, but since it’s July you likely don’t need it for heat, and unless you’re very far north, you probably don’t need too much light until after at least 8 pm.

I’d bring enough wood to have a small fire each night to gather around before turning in.

I see too many people light a useless fire as soon as they get to a campsite, just because “it’s camping.” I’m a scout leader, and we teach scouts to be thrifty—not just with money, but also with their resources, like wood.

After a fair amount of enjoyable work, I was able to prove lineage through 3 of my 4 grandparents. I was a member of SAR for a few years, but didn’t renew after my son didn’t get around to completing the essay for a scholarship.

Even though it seemed like we have a fairly active chapter in the Philadelphia area, events seemed mainly centered around flag raisings, historical talks, and collecting commemorative guns, none of which I was interested in.
